3. The urucú, also called achiote or annatto, is
native to the tropical regions of America,
specifically cultivated in Colombia, Mexico
and Peru. It is a perennial shrub up to 6 m
high, the fruits have thick, prickly hairs that
mature and open. Its seeds are the source of
a natural dye called annatto used in food. It
is used in cheese, margarine, smoked fish,
rice and cooking as a seasoning.

es oriundo de las regiones intertropicales de
América, cultivado específicamente en
Colombia, México y Perú. Es un arbusto
perenne de hasta 6 m de altura, cuyos frutos
presentan pelos gruesos y espinosos y que
al madurar se abren.
Sus semillas son la fuente de un colorante
natural utilizado en alimentación denominado
annatto. Se emplea en quesos, margarina,
pescado ahumado, arroz y también como
condimento de cocina.

The pulp of the carambola is rich in calcium

Es una fruta originaria de Indonesia, India y Sri

combinación de ciruela, ananá y limón.
La pulpa de la carambola es rica en oxalato de

en potasio. Es tóxica para personas con
enfermedad renal crónica.

actualmente se lo cultiva en Nueva Zelanda,
Australia, Chile y Estados Unidos.
Pertenece a la misma familia de los pepinos y
los melones. El fruto es verde al principio y
anaranjado con zonas más oscuras cuando
madura.
El interior es pulpa de llamativo color verde,
muy jugosa con pipas blancas similares a las
del pepino.
Su sabor está entre kiwi y banana cuando se
consume con azúcar, y cuando se consume
como ensalada es parecido al pepino, pero
más refrescante.
Es un gran hidratante y posee alto contenido
de potasio. En estado silvestre natural estos
frutos son extremadamente amargos, siendo
tóxicos para los mamíferos.

It belongs to the same family as cucumbers
and melons. The fruit is initially green and
orange with darker areas when mature.
