1. Shading In Graduated Tone

Whenever you’re drawing, always put a blank and clean paper underneath your hand so that it
won’t spoil your drawings that can result to dirty artwork.
The illustration below shows the sides of a 2B pencil that I use to draw for different effects.
To create a base tone for a smaller area, hold the pencil in this position. Rest your hand on the
paper with this position and use the blunt side of the pencil to draw.

2. And for a larger area, hold the pencil further back in the middle so that you can have more
control when shading.
Graduated Tone
Shading is a very important skill if you want to create realistic pencil portraits. Every aspect of
your pencil portrait relies on shading. Once you’ve mastered it, then you can learn shading in
graduated tone.

3. Step1: Shade the first layer with from A to B Step2: Shade the second layer from A to B by
and blend it by using a facial tissue. pressing harder.
Step 3: Shade the third layer from A to B with Step 4: Shade another layer from A to B by
a darker pencil. pressing harder with the darker pencil
Step 5: Shade the last layer from A to B by pressing Step 6: Blend the entire area with tissue,
even harder with the darker pencil. repeat all the steps and blend
it again softly with the tissue.

4. Graduated tone is very important to bring an object to life, which means to give the object a 3
dimensional effect. It’s one of the keys to create a realistic pencil portrait.
Remember, Do not blend it with your fingers.
