During World War 2, Londoners often took shelter from bombings in underground tube stations, with up to 175,000 people seeking refuge there every night in September 1940. The bombings left cities devastated and destroyed, creating powerful imagery of the desolation. Rail tunnels were also used as public air raid shelters during the war. Rationing and making do with less was part of daily life, as seen through packaging from the time. Propaganda posters with bold, stylized imagery surrounded people.
