2. Music
• The music that is found in Chile is Folklore
• The music in Chile reflects the spirit of the
people that live there.
• The musical style of the Nueva Cancion
originated in Chile.
• Well known names in contemporary music
in Chile are Inti Illimano, Illapu, & Congreso.
• An important traditional song is the Cueca.
Another form of Chilean song is the Tonada.
The differences are melodic sections in the
song & the Tonada is not danced to.
• The most common musical instruments in
Chile are panpipes, quenas, and flutes called
tarkas.

3. Art
• Chilean artists don’t receive much financial support for
their work.
• The Chilean Ministry of Education created a national
fund in 1992 called Fondart to help the development of
art & culture.
• Graphic arts have been dominated by paintings
• Museum of Fine Arts & the Museum of Contemporary
Arts in Santiago hold many of the major works of
Chilean artists since the 19th century.
• Written arts such as poetry has been the leading form
within Chilean literature.
• The poem La Araucana by Spanish poet Alonso de Ercilla,
is Chile’s first major literary work.

4. Dance
• The Folk music that Chile provides also
inspires the best performance arts.
• The national dance of Chile is the Cueca.
• The Cueca is influenced by African and
Spanish dancing.
• The courting dance is that of a hen & a
rooster.
• The male performer is aggressive while
the female is elusive & demure.
• The Cueca could be performed different
ways depending on your location (Cueca
Chilota or The Northern Cueca)
• Festivals are enjoyed through celebrations
of dancing.
