2. General Homestead Exemption
(GHE)
 his annual exemption is available for residential
property that is occupied as the principal dwelling
place of the owner, or a lessee; with a legal or
equitable interest in the property; with a singlefamily residence; and who is liable for the
payment of the property taxes on the leased
property. The amount of exemption is the
increase in the current year’s equalized assessed
value (EAV), above the 1977 EAV, up to a
maximum of $7,000 in Cook County and $6,000
in all other counties. The General Homestead

3.  Public Act 98-0007 which passed into law in 2013
increases the GHE amount for Cook County from
$6,000 to $7,000 beginning with the 2012 tax
year (property taxes payable in 2013). The
increase in GHE for Cook County will help to
offset the increase in EAV due to the Alternative
General Homestead Exemption expiring in each
of the assessment districts for the City of Chicago
and the North and South Suburbs.
