Commissioner's Message 04
In order to create a SMART ‘Free Economic Zone’, where both
‘highly sophisticated knowledge-based manufacturing’ and
‘knowledge-based service industries’, such as IT, parts &
materials for transportation, green energy as well as education,
medicine and culture, are fostered organically and complexly,
we have prepared medium and long term road maps that are
differentiated between 10 districts in DGFEZ, and moved forward
withthem.
As a result, The ‘Daegu International School’, which is affiliated
with the Lee Academy of the US, was opened for the first time
in Korea as an international school on 23rd August, 2010, and
is being operated successfully. In addition, the R&D center
of Dassault Systems, a leading French software company, is
locatedinDGFEZ.Recently,BoeingCompanyoftheUSisquickly
preparing for a groundbreaking ceremony in DGFEZ to tap into
the aviation electronics MRO business sector in Korea. Others,
including Daicel Corp., Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry
Co., Ltd., Pyung-Hwa Holdings & NOK Co., Ltd., Hyundai-
Cummins Engine Co. and Hyundai-IHL Co., ltd., have integrated
successfully into the DGFEZ, and are making their own success
stories.
However, there are a lot of tasks to be done and difficulties
to overcome. With our determination reaffirmed and new
resolutionstogetherwiththe5thanniversaryoftheinauguration,
the “DGFEZ Magazine” was published with the view of investors
in mind, in order to provide them with easier and more accurate
information.
We believe that the “DGFEZ Magazine” will be the fastest and
most efficient tool for delivering general information about the
living in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, for example, culture,
tourism, transportation and food as well as providing the
necessaryinvestmentinformation.
We promise to put forth our best efforts with tremendous
responsibility, in order for DGFEZ to become a comfortable
knowledge-based industrial complex, to supply creative talents
and eventually to grow into highly successful international
business districts with lots of investment attraction, by providing
thebestbusinessandlivingenvironmentsnowandforever.

Congratulatory Messages
MayorofDaeguMetropolitanCity
Kim,Bum-il
On behalf of the 2.6 million residents of Daegu, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the publication of the
DGFEZ Magazine. With the hopes of realizing the local people’s wishes, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic
Zone Authority was created in 2008 amidst changing economic environments, in order to discover new
economic growth engines and become a global business hub for knowledge creation. I would especially like
to thank Commissioner Choi Byung-rok and DGFEZ staffs for their dedication and hard work in successfully
developing the free economic zone and attracting foreign and domestic investments, despite difficult
circumstances at home and abroad during the past five years. Today, I am delighted to say that Daegu’s
growthisassoundasever.Werecordedthenation’sgreatestincreaseinexportsandtwelveofourcompanies
were listed as “World-class 300” businesses by the government, the largest number outside of Seoul. Against
this backdrop, we are doing our utmost to build a city where the dreams and visions of Daegu’s future can
be achieved and residents are happy to live. These efforts include designing a ‘high-tech medical complex
(Medivalley)’ and a national industrial complex, attracting sound businesses, and creating jobs for youth
employment. I am eager to see the DGFEZ play a significant role in fulfilling our vision of building “a Daegu
with a solid future,” and “a Daegu for happy citizens” as our city strives to become a global city that leads the
creation of wealth for Korea’s future. Once again, congratulations on the 5th anniversary of DGFEZ Authority
andtheinauguralpublicationoftheDGFEZMagazine.Thankyou.
I would like to join the 5.5 million residents of Gyeongsangbuk-do in congratulating you on the inaugural
publication of the DGFEZ Magazine. The development of the free economic zone is equivalent to laying sturdy
stepping stones for the vitalization of the local industry and economy as we are faced with the huge mission
of boosting the local economy and creating jobs. In fact, with the hopes of realizing the local people’s wishes,
DGFEZ Authority has been playing an important role in our local economy by successfully attracting world-
class foreign companies such as Boeing from the U.S, and Daicel, NOK Corporation from Japan. For this, I
am very thankful and proud of the Authority’s achievements. I expect to hear more good news of this kind
as the DGFEZ develops other business districts in the days ahead. In the same way that bellows are used to
grow a fire, I hope the newly published DGFEZ Magazine sparks a windfall of investments. In addition, I expect
this magazine to be a world-wide public relations Magazine by providing foreign investors with accurate
information as well as reliable contents, which of course, should be angled towards them. Congratulations
onceagainontheinauguralpublication,andIgivemywarmestwishesfortheDGFEZ’sgreatsuccess.
This is a significant year as it marks the start of a new decade since the launch of the Free Economic Zones.
So far, the FEZs have made continuous efforts to carry out development projects, rectify systemic flaws, and
secure foreign investments. As a result of such efforts, the FEZs were able to attract as much as $2.52 billion
in investments last year, the largest ever. Last July, we released the “First Blueprint for FEZs” that revealed
the new growth vision and goal for the next ten years. DGFEZ Authority in particular has worked ceaselessly
since its opening in 2008 to shape a new growth hub for knowledge-based industries despite difficult
economic circumstances. Should tangible outcomes be produced in the fields of IT, transport, machinery
parts, and the high-tech medical industry, the DGFEZ will certainly become a new growth model for all the
FEZs. Congratulations on the publication of the DGFEZ Magazine, a more strategic, more distinguished
marketing tool for investment. I wish you great success as you concentrate all your capacities in winning
investments.

2013, a variety of zone division plans, specific to the industries of
greenenergy,futurevehicles,ITconvergenceandmechatronics,
are taking shape. It also has a superb transportation
infrastructure, making the district very accessible: adjacent
to eight highways that connect to the Hyeonpung IC, only 50
minutes by plane between Daegu Airport and Incheon Airport,
within a one-hour drive to and from international ports in
Busan, Masan, Pohang and Ulsan, not to mention the inner-
city connector that is scheduled to be completed by the end of
2013. Also, approximately 17,000 graduates with backgrounds
in science and engineering from 52 colleges each year are top-
notch human resources that add to the Daegu Technopolis’
competitive edge, which is serving as an important landmark

Mecca of the automotive parts and IT convergence industries
The region of Daegu and Gyeongbuk has established itself as a Mecca
of Korea’s motor industry, housing the largest cluster of auto parts
companies (1,163) that employ 55,000 people and account for 27% of
Korea’s total auto parts production. Twenty-nine of those firms amass
revenues exceeding 100 billion KRW. Synergy effects are boosted due
totheproximityofrelevantR&DinstitutionsincludingtheDaeguCenter
of the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), “DGIST”,
ETRI’s Daegu and Gyeongbuk Regional Center for the production of
embeddedsoftwareplatformforelectricdevicesandtheKITECH(Korea
Institute of Industrial Technology) Daegu Gyeongbuk Headquarters.
Also, the ‘Proving Ground for Intelligent Vehicle & Transportation’ will
be constructed in the district for the first time in Korea. Consequently,
it will not only be possible for future vehicles to enable high-speed
road tests, tests for stability, and high-speed brakes as well as gas
mileage, but also to confirm durability programs and adaptive cruise
control systems. Such outstanding R&D infrastructure opens up
great possibilities for the region to become a cluster of the robotics
convergenceandmedicaldeviceindustriesaswell.
Location Yuga-myeon, Hyeonpung, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Metropolitan City (7.27㎢)
Business Types Green energy, future-oriented autos, IT convergence, mechatronics, etc.
As a R&D hub for generic/applied/
industrial technologies in the southeastern
part of Korea, we will further enhance its
investment merits by offering attractive
facilities for housing, business, education,
culture, leisure and green parks for
the members of our various research
institutions, science and engineering
colleges,andhigh-techbusinesses.
Building a transportation web and rich infrastructure for the
parts and materials industry
The ‘Yeongcheon High-Tech Parts and Materials Industry District’
was first designated and developed as a ‘general industrial
complex’ in June 2006. In light of its geographical proximity and
well-developed parts and materials industrial infrastructure
however, the district was also newly designated as a free
economic zone in May 2008. The objective was to enhance the
industry’s competitive edge and stimulate the local economy
by bringing in advanced technologies and investments from
abroad. With the aim of completing site preparation by August
2013, the construction of the main inner roads and access ramps
have been finished and the majority of infrastructure needed for
factory operations are now well set. Currently, world-renowned
auto parts companies from countries like Japan and France have
either already launched operations or are preparing to move into
the district by means of exclusive investments or joint venture
withKoreancompanies.
The highly accessible district is adjacent to the Gyeongbu
Expressway Yeongcheon IC and only 15 minutes away from the

areas as well as Daegu and Busan. Thanks to the
Gyeongbu Expressway, Daegu-Pohang Expressway,
and four-lane road network that covers the areas
of Daegu, Yeongcheon and Gyeongju, the district is
proud of its transportation infrastructure. Off the
mainland, but less than an hour away, are located four
international ports including the Yeongilman Port,
while the international airports in Daegu, Gimhae
and Ulsan facilitate travel to and from Japan, China,
Southeast Asia, the Americas and beyond. It is safe to
say that the district is a logistical hub for the export of
goodsthroughairandsea.
Building an automotive industrial cluster in Korea’s
largest AUTOMOTIVE VALLEY
In particular, the district is located at the center of the
AUTOMOTIVE VALLEY, which is comprised of Gumi
(electric devices), Daegu (mechatronics), Yeongcheon –
Gyeongju - Ulsan (finished cars), Busan (shipbuilding),
and Changwon (metal machinery). It is sure to play an
important role as an intermediate supply base with
global competitiveness through the technological
development of the automotive parts industry in the
VALLEY. Global car companies including Hyundai
Motors, GM Korea, and Renault Samsung do business
in the Valley, responsible for 50.5% (2.2 million cars) of
automobileproductioninKorea.
Neighboring cities have much to offer as well: Daegu
with abundant human resources thanks to its education
system; Pohang with the center of the nano, steel and
new materials industries; Gyeongju, home to Korea
Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.; Ulsan, the city of the
automotive and shipbuilding industry; Gumi, the city
of LCD and mobile electronics; and Changwon, the
center of machinery parts. If you add the region’s R&D
institutions like the ‘Gyeongbuk Hybrid Technology
Institute’ and the ‘Gyeongbuk Research Institute
of Vehicle Embedded Technology’, the Yeongcheon
Industry District is sure to grow as a global industrial
base for high-tech parts that creates optimal synergy
effects.

A new fashion city with its high sense of fashion culture
Centered on the advanced fashion and apparel industries,
the International Fashion District is an area specialized in
high-tech textiles, fashion and design. It is now growing
as a hub of fashion-related culture and arts. A variety of
projects are being carried out in stages, such as opening
an international school and college for textiles and fashion,
along with designing a research complex for textile fashion
design. Daegu is also well-known as a textile city, worthy of
thetitle,“Korea’sFashionCity.”
A future-oriented complex city with fashion as its theme
The fashion industry has now become a major cultural
industry. In a world where your outfit alone can send you
to stardom, fashion is no longer a simple mix of cloth and
thread, but a new source of power that draws attention and
controls culture, as well as a culture in and of itself. For
this reason, keeping in step with the trends of the advanced
fashion and apparel industries will guarantee economic

Let's Challenge 16
The International Fashion District, as a special area in the fashion business, is
developing concrete plans to leap as a cutting-edge textile materials complex
centeredonhighvalue-addedtextileindustry,fashionservice,andsmartwear.
Daegu is now well ready to emerge as one of Korea’s best fashion cities and
a mecca of the fashion industry. First, fashion-related businesses have been
clustered in one area, creating synergy effects. Global enterprises, R&D centers,
and international educational institutions have also been integrated into the cluster.
Finally, fashion-related R&D institutes have been secured one after the other,
such as the Korea Research Institute for Fashion Industry and the Korea Sewing
TechnologyInstitute.
Expecting to leap as a global fashion city
After experiencing a boom in the 1960s and ‘70s, Daegu’s textile industry fell into
a recession in the years following the ‘90s. As the number of relevant businesses
dropped from 1,000 to 700 between the years 2000 and 2010, concerned voices

Daegu Metropolitan City (1.05㎢)
Business Types Medical R&D centers, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, etc.
Ideal site with its optimal traffic network and medical
environment ready in advance
With the aim of becoming a high-tech medical complex,
the Sinseo Meditech District can be said to be a “prepared
environment” ready in advance. Land compensation
procedures for the site to create a new ‘innovation city’
have been completed in response to the governmental
policy to relocate public enterprises to non-metropolitan
areas for balanced regional development. The district has
great accessibility as it is a 15 minute car ride to and from
downtown, 10 kilometers away from the KTX Dongdaegu
Station, and 9 kilometers away from Daegu International
Airport. The Sinseo Meditech District aims to design the
country’s best cutting-edge medical complex that will
house global research institutes for medical development.
In the district’s vicinity are 227 medicine-related academic
departments across eleven medical and pharmacy schools
including Kyeongbuk National University(KNU), which
supply 20% of Korea’s medical professionals. Clustered
are 48 medical R&D institutions, one of which is the only
clinical and medical facility in a non-metropolitan area.
Moreover, the Cellular Immunology Laboratory (POSTECH)
is one of the thirteen government-designated state of the
art convergence laboratories in the region. These provide
for a medical environment that helps promote a high-tech
medicalindustry.
Building medical clusters with excellent living conditions
for foreigners
The investment conditions in the Sinseo Meditech District
for securing foreign and domestic private capital to
develop new drugs and cutting-edge medical devices look
favorable. Designated as the site reserved for the creation
of an ‘innovation city’, and one of the ten business districts
of the DGFEZ, the Sinseo Meditech District permits the
establishment of for-profit medical corporations and
guarantees the practice of non-Korean doctors and
pharmacists. Foreign employees will also receive tax
reductionsaswellasexemptions.
Currently, the district is jointly engaged in the establishment
of an international regeneration institute with Wake Forest
University in the U.S. It also signed an MOU with New
Jersey’s medical cluster for cooperation (2009), along with
an agreement to jointly foster a U-health industry with New
Zealand’s Uniservices. Additionally, it is partnering with the
Kobe High-tech Medical Promotion Foundation in Japan
to develop new drugs. These efforts are geared at building
a network with advanced medical clusters overseas for
joint research and cooperation. All eyes are on the Sinseo
Meditech District, which is also equipped with the high
quality and superb medical services. This makes one all
the more eager to see what kind of blueprint their efforts to

The Suseong Medical District is being planned as a knowledge service

designated as a special economic district designed on the foundation
of advanced knowledge from abroad and of cutting-edge medical

development.
The district is located downtown, one of the most preferred educational

services. Another great advantage is the ease with which partners and
high caliber medical personnel can be secured to establish and run the
specialized hospitals, thanks to the five medical colleges, seven nursing

Medical city specialized in alternative medicine
research and high-quality medical services
Another reason why the Suseong Medical District
is drawing attention as a specialized medical
complex lies in its potential cooperation with
nearby Yakryeong, the center of Korean oriental
medicine, through the combination of eastern
and western medicine. To that end, the Catholic
University of Daegu and Daegu Haany University
are jointly building an ‘integrated medical center’
through the ‘Comprehensive & Integrative

the research and development of alternative
medicine. In particular, a national project to
create a ‘convergence software cluster’ will
produce synergies with the development of the

of the Gyeongsan’s population, or 150,000 people, are affiliated with the city’s thirteen universities, of which four are technical
colleges. As the numbers indicate, it has been consistently suggested that Gyeongsan has the potential location to be a special
district for the internationalization of the Daegu education system and serve as an international academic belt for the Daegu and
Gyeongbuk region. In 2011, as part of a national project, it was designated as a specialty complex for the next-generation of the
construction equipments and parts. Plans are in place to vitalize the R&BD District and foster a high-value added industry based
on knowledge services by attracting the industries of construction equipments and parts, high-tech medical devices and new
medicalmaterials,greenpartsandmaterials,andinstitutionsforR&Dandeducationalresearch.
International-level high-tech industry convergence district and Korea’s best
knowledge industry district through industial-educational cooperation
The city of Gyeongsan that houses the Gyeongsan R&BD District and Daegu
Metropolitan City together boast of a highly-educated workforce and superior
R&D infrastructure. Combined, the two cities have 52 colleges that produce 70,000
graduates annually. Also in the area are upwards of 200 research institutions including
the ‘Gyeongbuk Research Institute of Vehicle Embedded Technology (GIVET)’ and
the ‘Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH)’. There are more than twenty
academic departments related to medicine such as pharmacy and life sciences in the
region’smedicalschoolsthatproducethousandsofmedicaltalentseachyear.
Moreover, the area has a diverse R&D infrastructure spanning machinery metals and
automotives that include the ‘Gyeongbuk Techno Park’, the ‘Korea Textile Machinery
Research Center’, the ‘Gyeongbuk Hybrid Technology Institute (GHI)’, and the
‘Yeungnam University’s Green Car Technology Task Force’. Global anchor companies
like Samsung, LG, POSCO, and Hyundai Heavy Industries are located an hour away
from the neighboring cities of Gumi, Ulsan and Pohang, making Gyeongsan a great

As the Yeongcheon Industry District for automotive parts and materials is scheduled to be completed by August of this year, the
Yeongcheon High-tech Park is expected to serve as the center for the aviation and future car industries. Located in Hwasan-
myeon, Jungang-dong in Yeongcheon city, it is close to the North Yeongcheon IC of the Daegu-Pohang Expressway. In order to
build a foundation for the high-tech industry and secure projects for future growth engines, the Yeongcheon High-tech Park aims
to design specialty complexes centered on the aviation electronics and high-tech mechatronics industries. By developing it in the
form of a science park where relevant R&D infrastructure is combined harmoniously with the proper industrial base, we plan to

Building a global science park centered on the world’s best aviation industry and top-
notched R&D infrastructure
The Yeongcheon High-Tech Park was selected by the government as a prospective hub
of the aviation parts industry in 2010. In September 2012 the world’s largest aviation
company, Boeing, made the decision to begin operations there due to the Park’s easy
access to the aviation infrastructure such as Daegu International Airport, K-2 Air Base
and Air Force Logistics Command. The first project phase for the district is underway

Together with GIVET (Gyeongbuk Research Institute of Vehicle Embedded Technology),
which entered the district in April 2012, the ‘High-tech Park’ will drive the development
of the intelligent and future automotive industries by collaborating with GHI(Gyeongbuk

already in store for the ‘High-tech Park’: the national project for the ‘Medical Mold R&BD’,
the ‘Gyeongbuk Natural Color Industry Institute’, and the ‘Hyundai Glovis Logistics Center

Mr. Smathers first encountered the traditional Korean
fan dance and Korean food in 1997 at a Korean church in
Savannah. He was impressed by how the dancers adorning
hanboks, traditional Korean dresses, flicked open the fans
so gracefully. As a graduate student, he took a short but
packed three-month trip to Korea. Charmed by the country,
he started to learn Korean as soon as he returned to the
U.S., determined to go back after he graduated. Fortunately,
Korean came easier to him than any other language. Was it
fate? Well, he has already spent twelve years, or one-third of
his lifetime, in the country he came to know and love through

Discovering passion and self in Daegu
Everything was ready to leave for Korea. Then, the tragedy of September 11, 2001
happened. Friends and family tried talking him out of it, but not even a terrorist attack that
shook the world could stop Mr. Smathers. Determined to come to Korea, he boarded the
planetoIncheonamonthlater.
With a will to “try,” he spent his first year studying Korean with his home-stay family
through one-on-one tutoring sessions and language academy classes, all the while
earning a living by teaching English. And though it wasn’t easy for him to position himself
as a photographer in Korea, he did not give up. Then, in 2011, he earned the chance of his
lifetimewhenhewasinvitedtoteachatKeimyungUniversity.
Things were not always so picture-perfect, and he soon
faced a tragedy of his own. His father lost his battle with
cancer one year after being diagnosed in 2010. The feelings
of guilt for not being able to spend time with his father
during his last days and the grief of death were captured
exactly as they came in his pictures. Taking pictures had
helpedhimovercomethepainandgriefhefeltatthetime.
“Before I came to Daegu, I had difficulty trying to
finding my identity. I wasn’t passionate about my work
and I barely filmed. It was when I came to Daegu that

To Mr. Smathers, the opportunity to teach photography at

Due to the attraction of foreign direct investment by the DGFEZ and

been rising. What would make the city more enjoyable for its non-Korean
residents? Mr. Smathers tells us about his experience tasting sannakji (live
squid) and bosintang (dog meat soup). “What about bundaegi (silk larva), the
food of the future?” we ask. “Not yet.” From his comical facial expressions,
one can see that the photographer truly enjoys familiarizing himself with
new cultures. Perhaps the best way to adapt to life in Daegu, or any other

One-hundred-year-old camera capturing the past and present
To Professor Smathers, happiness is nothing short of going hiking at the
mountains in Daegu with his four-year old son, Noah. On weekends, you
can find them at Biseulsan, Juamsan, or Palgongsan. It’s the fact that he
can spend time with his son while taking pictures that makes the hike
so enjoyable. Last January, he bought a 100-year-old EASTMAN VIEW
CAMERA No.2-D for a very good price. After a month of outfitting it with
new accessories, the large camera has since become his best friend. The
100-year-old historical treasure is now capturing images of Daegu as it is

2 of the Daegu Jung-gu Alley Tour. The culturally rich street has a lot
to offer during its 2.5 hour travel course including hanbang (Korean
herbal medicine) healing shops. The 1.5 kilometer alleyway course
was dubbed a “Star of Korean Tourism” and made it on the list of “Top
99 Tourist Spots in Korea.” The course layout allows visitors to explore
modern culture without getting lost. You can start at Yakryeongsi
Museum of Oriental Medicine, pass Gyesan Cathedral and walk down
March 1st Movement Road, which will take you back to the cathedral
and lead to Gyesanyega (the old houses of Lee Sang-hwa and Seo
Sang-don).
Across the street from Yakryeongsi Cultural Center for Oriental
Medicine is the former First Presbyterian Church. Symbolizing the
introduction of Protestantism in Daegu, the building has great religious
and cultural significance as well as architectural value. Green ivy
blankets the walls of the church, which is designated as Tangible
Cultural Asset No. 30 by Daegu Metropolitan City. Built in 1902, Gyesan
Cathedral serves as a “guide” for tourists in the Modern Culture Alleys
much like the Big Dipper. At 111 years of age, the cathedral is the third
oldestGothic-stylecathedralinallofKorea,after Seouland Pyongyang.
The red-brick edifice has stood tall and proud throughout all the years
of Daegu’s growth and development. Perhaps that is why looking at it
is strangely reassuring. The red bricks glow ever more radiantly in the

•• • The Path of the Past
I crossed the main street to the First Presbyterian Church. Next
to the grandiose gray church building is a charming cluster of
perfectly preserved brick houses that look like they were built
by the youngest of “The Three Little Pigs.” On what is called
Dongsan Hill stand three former missionary’s residences along
with the ninety-step staircase of March 1st Movement Road,
which showcases the contrast between pre-modern and modern
history like a black and white photo. Though there used to be
seven residences on the hill, there now remain only those of
missionariesSwitzer,Chamness,andBlair.
The Switzer House, designated as Daegu Metropolitan City’s
Tangible Cultural Asset No. 24, now serves as a missionary
museum and is open to the public. An apple tree of more than 100
years, known as the first western tree in Daegu, sits in the garden

With each step I take, I reflect on the stories hidden in each alley.
Looking down on the quiet, rainy city from the missionary’s

sense the presence of the artists who expressed the sorrow of the
times through their artwork: Park Tae-jun, the father of Korean arias
who sang about the green ivy-covered Cheongra Hill in Daegu; Lee
Sang-hwa, the nationalist poet who resisted Japanese colonialism;
and Lee In-sung, the brilliant painter born in Daegu. Daegu’s Alleys

Seomun Market: 100 years of history
Daegu Seomun Market dates back to the middle of the
Choseon Dynasty. Formerly known as “Daegu Market,” it
was one of the three largest markets in the Choseon era
along with Pyongyang Market and Ganggyeong Market.
DaeguMarketcontinuedtogrowandwasrenamed“Seomun
Market” in 1922 because it was situated in the western
part of Daegu (“seo” means west and “mun” means gate).
Covering an area of 27,062㎡ and a building area of 64,902
㎡, the extensive market sells everything under the sun
from hanboks and accessories to bedding, dishware, fresh
produce, dried fish, and fresh seafood. Seomun Market
has been sustaining the livelihood of the working class
ever since its opening. It has been around for so long that
there’s really nothing you can’t buy there. Visitors will find
shopkeepers of the vast market to be extremely generous.
Napjak mandu, a flat dumpling that is unique to Daegu, is
the first to entice shoppers. The dish is so popular that the
aroma alone has become a trademark of the market. And
you can’t leave out seeded hoddeok (flat cakes), kalguksu
(noodles),andhandmadesujebi (Koreandumplingsoup).
Nationally famous for fabrics
Unlike most traditional markets, many of Seomun Market’s customers
are young people. College students pick out craft materials for
accessories, engaged couples order custom-tailored hanboks for their
wedding, and shopkeepers travel from far away to buy fabric. Seomun
Market is truly living up to its reputation for carrying some of the best
silks, linens and cottons in Korea. The 1950s saw the formation of
the country’s largest fabric market, as textile wholesalers clustered
in the vicinity. The advantages of belonging to a city with a tradition of
textiles enabled it to grow as the largest wholesale market for apparel
and fabrics. At its peak in the late 1950s, it was responsible for 40% of
transactions among Daegu’s fifteen markets combined. It also played a
central commercial role in the provinces of Gyeongsang, Chungcheong,
and Jeolla, taking up almost half of the total transaction of textiles in the
country.

Fashionable clothing shops for the twenties and thirties crowd
and entertainment facilities for teenagers are on the rise, attracting
younger customers and shopkeepers alike to the market. There
is something for everyone to enjoy at Seomun Market, the place

Yeongcheon Public Market, a Major Player inYeongnam
Yeongcheon Public Market is one of the three largest in the
Yeongnamregion,togetherwithDaegu SeomunMarketandAndong
Market. According to records, the market opened near the end of
the Choseon Dynasty and was moved from its first location by the
Namcheon River to its present venue in Wansan-dong in 1955. Not
only did it connect the city and the rural area, it also served as a
meeting place for the residents of Yeongcheon, Daegu, Yeongnam
and beyond. The market is most famous for dombaegi, which is
the Gyeongsang colloquial name for “shark meat.” Dombaegi” is
valued highly in Yeongcheon; it is one of the dishes served during
ancestral rituals called “jaesa”. Fish was always hard to find in the
inland region. Transportation to and from the East Sea was not only
inconvenient, but fish also tended to spoil in transit to Yeongcheon.
That is, until salt became available. Fishermen found that by cutting
the shark open and pouring salt inside the shark meat could be kept
from spoiling for more than two days. The difficult task of salting
and airlifting the massive sharks explains why Dombaegi was so
precious back then. To this day, Yeongcheon locals make sure to

Another source of pride for Yeongcheon Public Market is
Gomtang Street, an alley of restaurants specializing in beef-
bone soup. The clean and orderly alley can be considered a
market in and of itself. The restaurants there receive delivery
orders from around the country—showing that they have won
the nation’s approval. One bowl of the rich and milky soup will
refresh your body during the hot summer. Countless numbers
of repeat customers have been buying Gomtang from the alley

Yeongcheon Market is divided into a section for dining
and a section for dried seafood and dombaegi, making it
convenient for shoppers. The market is also well-known
for boddari mandu, dumplings shaped like small bundles.
Each dumpling is filled with japchae, and the four sides of
the flatly-rolled wrap are folded over. First-timers are sure
to become devoted fans of the chewy, stuffed bundles.
This is just one of the countless foods the market has to
offer, so make sure to come with an empty stomach when

In this era of fierce competition, businesses prioritize the task of fostering creative,
global-minded talents who can pioneer new markets and lead the knowledge-based
economy. They are looking for well-rounded individuals equipped with an international
outlook, a good understanding of different cultures, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Established in 1845, it has a rich legacy. Currently there
are around 280 students from 18 countries. Its intensive,
yet individualized curriculum encourages self-initiated
learning. Lee Academy is accredited by the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). As a branch
campus of Lee Academy, the school offers kindergarten to
highschooleducationthatfollowsanAmericancurriculum,
uses American textbooks, and is taught by American
teachers. Daegu City worked especially hard to open this
branch school, knowing that having an international school
was critical to inviting foreign businesses to its region. We
negotiated with four different schools over the course of
five years about the potential joint venture, but they all fell
through. At long last, we held hands with Lee Academy,
both committed to raising leaders in a global society.
Funding to build the school came from Daegu City (12.2
billion won), the central government (9.8 billion won), and
LeeAcademy(2milliondollars).
What kind of students does DIS strive to raise up?
As the school name suggests, we place an emphasis on
fostering global leaders with a heart for their neighbors.
As part of that effort, students at DIS are engaged in
community volunteering such as reading English books to
the neighboring Haeseo Elementary School students and
partnering with the Daegu Red Cross to serve lunch to the

What sets DIS apart from other schools?
Our school is small enough that all the students know one

students and allows us to offer customized education in
accordance with the Lee Academy ideology. Our students

assessments taken by students across the U.S. Our
faculty are highly qualified as well; more than 70% have

Unlike other schools founded by religious organizations,
non-Korean individuals or Korean school foundations,
DIS was established by and operates directly under an
American institution. For this reason, we were fortunate
that it did not take long for the ideology of an international
school to take root and to achieve stability. Our greatest
strength lies in the fact that we are educating future
leaders that the world is looking for. A global talent is not
just fluent in English, but is able to think globally. Having a
global mind entails using your abilities for the social good

At DIS, classes are designed to promote self-initiate
learning. Students research topics assigned by the
teacher, conduct their own discussions and present
what they learned to the class. Even our gym classes are
geared towards building teamwork, sportsmanship, trust
andconfidence.
In the process, students learn communication skills and
self-control. We started a sports league with foreign schools
in Busan, Jinju, Pohang and Gwangju to encourage friendly

What are your thoughts on DGFEZ?
DGFEZ has brought to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk region
a variety of international events as well as many global
businesses. Tangible progress is being made, and
companies are actually moving into the district. It brings
me great pleasure that the DGFEZ is boosting the economic
development of Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and throughout the

commitment at DIS to address one of the most important
issues parents face when working abroad—education for

Developing shipbuilding solutions from France
Based in Velizy, France, Dassault Systèmes was established
in 1981 and has since been a leader in shipbuilding solutions
development. It is a sizeable company with 153 subsidiaries
and 22 R&D Centers across 27 countries, employing 7,660
people. Since its opening in 2010, the Daegu R&D center
has been making rapid progress, having already hired
the 33 staff ahead of its 2014 target. Eight of the 33 staff
have nationalities outside of Korea, showing that Dassault
Systèmes truly transcends national boundaries. The Daegu
R&D Center aims to expand by hiring talented individuals
with diverse backgrounds and become the best of its kind in
Asia.
Building a nest in Daegu
The decision to open up an R&D center in Daegu was not
met without opposition at first. There was concern over
the inadequate protection of intellectual property rights in
Korea. The opposing voices started to die down with the
help of the highly supportive Daegu City and DGFEZ. Other
factors that helped sway the vote in Daegu’s favor included
the abundance of highly skilled researchers in Daegu and
Gyeongbuk, not to mention the convenient location of the
center. It is situated at the center of town, on the Keimyung
University campus, providing for great accessibility and
an excellent research environment. Finally, the generosity
shown by both the central and local governments
acceleratedthemove.
Promising future for Daegu R&D Center
Dassault Systèmes' Daegu R&D Center carries great
significance as the first company to invest and move in to
the DGFEZ. It is hoped that the research center will open
up opportunities for the small and medium enterprises
in Daegu to utilize Dassault Systèmes' highly-developed

First foreign investor in Gyeongbuk’s five districts
Daicel Corporation established a company in South Korea—
Daicel Safety Systems Korea, Inc. (DSSK) in Yeongcheon,
Gyeongbuk in 2012. The Japanese automotive parts
company, Daicel, has a global reputation for its meticulous
management of the entire manufacturing process from
conducting research prior to production to releasing the final
product. Manufacturing airbag components, panel displays,
ethanol chains and more, Daicel employs upwards of 2,000
workers and grosses 5.1 trillion won in annual revenues.
In March 2011, the global company came to Yeongcheon,
in order to construct a factory for manufacturing inflators,
a gas-generating device for airbags in cars. Since the
completion of the factory in April 2013, DSSK has already
begun test operations of its equipment. The new factory is
especially significant for being the first foreign investment
companyinallfivedistrictsofGyeongbuk.
Prioritizing safety and quality
Most important to DSSK are safety and quality. With a motto
“WeSaveLives,”thecompanyfocusesonthepeoplethatwill
use their products. It embraces the philosophy of working
with a heart for people and their safety, and aims to become
the world’s number one leading company in safety parts.
By upgrading pyrotechnics concentrating on manufacturing
bettergoods,itprovidestheworldwithbetterproducts.
DSSK’s care for people also extends to its employees. For
example, its employees learn foreign languages through
language programs and their retirement age is now
extended to 60. It is maximizing the number of Korean
workers by keeping dispatched Japanese workers to a
minimum.
Spreading its wings in DGFEZ
Before selecting Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk as its factory site,
DSSK carefully considered the benefits of the DGFEZ. The
incentives stood out first. In addition to cash assistance, the
company would receive a 3-year exemption on corporate
taxes and 50% reduction for the next 2 years; a 5-year
exemption on tariffs for imported capital goods; a full
exemption on acquisition taxes; and a 10-year exemption
on property taxes and 50% reduction for the next 5 years.
And taking into consideration its unfamiliarity of Korean
geography, the DGFEZ has been providing the foreign
company with professional consultation on licensing, factory
establishment, operation, etc. Now all there’s left to do for
DSSKistospreaditswingshere.

What is your favorite Korean food and why?
That’saneasyquestion! Samgyeopsal!Why?Whynot? Samgyeopsal
is sliced pork (like bacon) cooked on the BBQ, then dipped in salt and
wrapped in lettuce. Then you add a beer or soju to wash it down. It
hasalltheelementsforaCanadiantolove!
Where is your favorite place to visit in Daegu?
Bongmu Park. It’s a peaceful place on the way to Palgong Mountain
and behind Daegu International School. If the weather cooperates,
we will go there for a walk once or twice a month. The hiking trail is
about 3-4 km long and it surrounds a man-made lake, so the air is
freshandtrailisrelativelyflat.SinceI’moneofthosepeoplethathate
hiking up the mountains this place offers up a great compromise.
People can also go water skiing or visit the butterfly museum,
althoughbutIhaven’ttriedeitheryet.
You are the first foreign employee of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free
Economic Zone. Can you comment on your experience?
I am not just the first foreign employee, but the only foreign employee
in entire region. Overall, it’s been a positive experience. My co-
workers have been great to work with. Some speak English better
than others, but we manage to find a way to communicate. My
Korean ability is not where it should be, but I can understand most
conversationsifgiventhecontext.
How are you? Please tell us a little bit about
yourself.
I’m fine thank you and you? My name is Simon
Hoggett and I have been the Marketing Manager
for Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone since
2009. Originally, I am from Timmins, Ontario,
Canada. Timmins is a small city of 50,000 people,
located about 8 hours north of Toronto. The natural
environment is great, even though it can get a little
cold in the winter. I have a beautiful wife, Maria
and we are about to celebrate our 5th Wedding
Anniversary.
Can you tell us about your first thoughts of Daegu
and your experiences of Korean culture?
My first thoughts of Daegu were… actually I don’t
remember, it’s been that long! My first feeling was
that the people were nice to me, so my impression
was good. Daegu was a little bigger and the people
a little louder than I am used to. Everything is ok
now, though. In terms of culture, eating together is
a way of promoting harmony and social interaction.
It’s a little strange for people to eat alone and it’s
also uncommon for people to eat with their left
hand. Being left-handed and sometimes enjoying a
lunch by myself, that part of the culture stuck out in
particular

Has it been easy for you communicate with your
co-workers and maintain a smooth working
relationship?
Sure, it’s been relatively easy. We have an internal
message system that we use to send instant
messages. That program and Google Translate are
very helpful. Basically, Korea is the same as other
countries, except that the work is expected to be
donefaster.Youknow…BaliBali!
What have you been able to accomplish so far
while working at DGFEZ?
One of the things I’ve been able to add is an expats’
perspective in terms of branding and strategy. One
example would be our internal tracking database
that I suggested a few years back. Prior to that,
information about our meetings and research was
stored in each team’s cabinet, or individual PCs
without any sort of central organization. Now, the
information is stored digitally on our IAM System
(Investment Attraction Management). It’s more work
for initially, but over the long term it has greatly
improve efficiency and strategically in regards to
CRM.
Another example would be the re-launch of the
DGFEZ website in 2012. It was quite a long project.
In simple terms, we re-organized and presented our
Global Meeting 1
information to be more focused on the needs of investor and
site selectors. As a result of our efforts, DGFEZ was ranked
2nd best in terms of Digital Marketing by the Financial Times.
Thatwasquiterewardingforourteam.
Tell us your plans for the future and any closing words that
you wish.
It’s the summer time and that has been traditionally a less busy
time for us. Vacation is fast approaching and I’m very much
looking forward to that. In the meantime, we will design our
new social media plan and organize our fall activities. It’s not
exactlyexciting,butitbeatsgoingoutsideintheheat!

Daegu has been developing as a center of medicine since
the Joseon Dynasty. The growth of the market for herbal
medicines in Yakryeongsi attracted both merchants and
practitioners of oriental medicine to Daegu. There are even
recordsof medicalpublications.
Nationally famous for fabrics
In modern times, the city also opened western-style medical
schools following Seoul and Pyongyang. Embracing western
medicine on a solid foundation of eastern medicine may have
been the key to the growth of medical services in this city.
Currently home to five medical universities, 29 general hospitals,
and 18,000 medical personnel, this medical city boasts a superb
medicalinfrastructure,oneofthebestofitskind,indeed.
Daegu not only offers a wide range of medical services such as
health check-ups, plastic surgery, skin treatments, obstetrics,
hair transplants, dentistry, and oriental medicine, it also provides
all the above and more medical services at lower costs compared
to Seoul and Busan. Even better, all kinds of fees and examination
prices are internationally competitive: 1/9 that of the U.S., 1/4 that
of Japan, and 1/2 that of Singapore. With the Daegu International
Airport, KTX and two subway lines, its convenient public
transportationmakesitmoreattractivefortourists.
Enjoying it all at once – Part One
How satisfied would you be if you traveled overseas only to receive
a medical service? This is the idea behind the convergence of
existingtourismwithmedicalservices.
Package tours were designed for tourists to enjoy medical
treatment, rest, culture and shopping all at once. Tour courses
include Seomun Market, Gyodong Jewelry Town, Donghwasa
Temple, Mt. Palgongsan, Guam Village, Yakryeong Market and
other top tourist attractions in Daegu. Tourists who choose the
three-day package have the option of sightseeing outside the city,
such as Pohang’s Fireworks Festival, Gyeongju’s Silla Theme
Park, Cheongdo’s Bullfighting Festival, and Andong’s Hahoe
Village.

Korea, is expected to be completed by 2014, and will provide medical
treatments,accommodationsandrestinthesamefacility.
Located at the heart of the city, the Daegu Medicenter will service
both locals and overseas travelers using a “one stop healthcare
system” approach. Unlike the typical hospital experience, the center
will offer entertainment as well as introduce the well-preserved

On the first three floors you will be able to find financial institutions,
hair salons, coffee shops, pharmacies and other community
facilities. Floors 4 to 13 will be reserved for medical treatment with
14 to 18 for the hotel. An underground jazz bar and rooftop stage will
provide cultural entertainment for visitors. The Medicenter intends
to incorporate the Modern Culture Alleys Tour Course developed
by the city (see pgs. 26-29) into its health care system as well, so

TheFourthGeneration
LightSource(4GLS)
The groundbreaking ceremony for the 4th generation light source (4GLS) was held at POSTECH in
Pohang on May 9, 2013. When the facility is complete in 2014, Korea will become just the third country
intheworldtohavea4GLS,aftertheU.S.andJapan.

Adding the dimension of time to the 3rd GLS
A synchrotron light source is an electromagnetic radiation
emitted when charged particles are accelerated in a vacuum
at nearly the speed of light in either a circular or spiral
direction by the magnetic field. Think about it as an enormous
high power microscope. The microscopic structure of matter
can be observed and analyzed by speeding up electrons until
radiation is emitted. Though the third-generation accelerator
in Pohang emits X-rays, it is not bright enough to allow the
observation of atoms or molecules in motion. In contrast, the
4GLSemitsX-rayfreeelectronlasers(XFEL)whoselightisten
billiontimesbrighteranddoesnotdisperse.
Entering a new world through light
Faster than the speed of light, the 4GLS will enable
researchers to instantaneously capture processes that the
third-generation light source was unable to catch. This makes
it possible to observe various types of ultra-fast natural
phenomena such as chemical catalytic reactions, molecular
binding, and biological responses. Since the 4GLS functions
like a camera, filming atomic movement and capturing the
internal structure of cells, it can even be used to identify the
cause of diseases at the cellular level. The 4GLS also has the
ability to see substances with sizes at the nano and femto
level, which is not possible while using microscopes, sheds a
new ray of hope for the development of next-generation nano-
materials. Instantaneous structural analysis of proteins and
other microscopic substances can help scientists make new
protein-based drugs. The 4GLS will have the added benefit
of being cost-effective for researchers because test samples
will no longer have to be damaged by X-rays after multiple
exposures and desirable results can be attained in just one
trial.
Pohang, now ready to soar with 4GLS
The fourth-generation light source user facility is located in
close proximity to the Pohang Fusion Tech District, a district
of DGFEZ. Seeking to become the Silicon Valley of Korea in
the 21st century, the district will be comprised of
R&D institutions that develop and commercialize
new technologies and products through industrial
convergence. More specifically, the District will focus
ongreenenergy,biotech,partsandmaterialstobuild
itself as a global hub for convergence technology.
Projects to build social-based facilities in the district
will likely receive a boost thanks to the 4GLS project,
whichwasabletosecure105billionwon(95.3million
USD) in funding in 2013. The 4GLS is expected to
receive more support, as a project that will make
a significant contribution to employment and the
economy, not to mention its huge contribution to the
advancement of Korea’s high-tech industries. When
the advantages of Pohang’s logistics environment
are combined with the new technologies of the
4GLS;the4GLSwillprovetobeahugeadvantage for
the companies that choose to locate in the Pohang

1)“Femto” is a prefix that denotes a factor of 10-15
. It is attached in front of
measuring units (e.g. 1 femtometer = 10-15

The 1st Chimek (Chicken Beer) Festival
took place at the Duryu Baseball Field
from July 18-21. Thanks to social network
services on the internet, people were pretty
hyped up for the festival by the time it began.
There, you could sample chimek, which is
slang for chicken and beer, at no cost while
enjoying a variety of events. July in Daegu
this year was unbearably hot, but the festival
was as refreshing as a nice glass of cold
beer. People already cannot wait for the fun-

Meeting “Another Me” Behind the Mask
Most of those superheroes made their own masks. At least once
in your lifetime, you’ve also probably dreamed about becoming
“another me” that people don’t know. Come to the Andong
International Mask-dance Festival, where you can try on masks
of all sorts and jump into the world of freedom and imagination
you’ve dreamed about. Each year, countries around the world are
invited to display their own folk masks at the World Mask Culture
Exhibition that runs throughout the duration of the festival. Also
in the spirit of being a truly international festival, modern mask-
dance performers from outside of Korea were invited for the first
timein2012,infusingmodernwithtraditionalforanewtwist.
You and I, Becoming One in the Excitement
The highlight of the festival filled with sights and
entertainment is without a doubt the Daedong Nanjang
Parade (literally, disorderly mix-up parade). At the front
strides the first group of local participants, which is
followed by the foreign performers who competed in that
day’s mask-dance and folk music events. As the parade
progresses, however, the two groups get mixed up and
the excitement of the moment takes control. Come to the
Andong International Maskdance Festival in October, when

  • 4. Commissioner's Message 04 In order to create a SMART ‘Free Economic Zone’, where both ‘highly sophisticated knowledge-based manufacturing’ and ‘knowledge-based service industries’, such as IT, parts & materials for transportation, green energy as well as education, medicine and culture, are fostered organically and complexly, we have prepared medium and long term road maps that are differentiated between 10 districts in DGFEZ, and moved forward withthem. As a result, The ‘Daegu International School’, which is affiliated with the Lee Academy of the US, was opened for the first time in Korea as an international school on 23rd August, 2010, and is being operated successfully. In addition, the R&D center of Dassault Systems, a leading French software company, is locatedinDGFEZ.Recently,BoeingCompanyoftheUSisquickly preparing for a groundbreaking ceremony in DGFEZ to tap into the aviation electronics MRO business sector in Korea. Others, including Daicel Corp., Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry Co., Ltd., Pyung-Hwa Holdings & NOK Co., Ltd., Hyundai- Cummins Engine Co. and Hyundai-IHL Co., ltd., have integrated successfully into the DGFEZ, and are making their own success stories. However, there are a lot of tasks to be done and difficulties to overcome. With our determination reaffirmed and new resolutionstogetherwiththe5thanniversaryoftheinauguration, the “DGFEZ Magazine” was published with the view of investors in mind, in order to provide them with easier and more accurate information. We believe that the “DGFEZ Magazine” will be the fastest and most efficient tool for delivering general information about the living in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, for example, culture, tourism, transportation and food as well as providing the necessaryinvestmentinformation. We promise to put forth our best efforts with tremendous responsibility, in order for DGFEZ to become a comfortable knowledge-based industrial complex, to supply creative talents and eventually to grow into highly successful international business districts with lots of investment attraction, by providing thebestbusinessandlivingenvironmentsnowandforever. DGFEZAuthorityCommissioner Choi Byung-Rok DGFEZ MAGAZINE FOREWORD Five years have passed since the opening of DGFEZ authority. Meanwhile we have strived hard to promote DGFEZ as a new growth engine for the development of a knowledge-based economy, with thehopesof realizingthelocalpeople’swishes.
  • 5. Magazine Vision Together05 Congratulatory Messages MayorofDaeguMetropolitanCity Kim,Bum-il On behalf of the 2.6 million residents of Daegu, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the publication of the DGFEZ Magazine. With the hopes of realizing the local people’s wishes, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority was created in 2008 amidst changing economic environments, in order to discover new economic growth engines and become a global business hub for knowledge creation. I would especially like to thank Commissioner Choi Byung-rok and DGFEZ staffs for their dedication and hard work in successfully developing the free economic zone and attracting foreign and domestic investments, despite difficult circumstances at home and abroad during the past five years. Today, I am delighted to say that Daegu’s growthisassoundasever.Werecordedthenation’sgreatestincreaseinexportsandtwelveofourcompanies were listed as “World-class 300” businesses by the government, the largest number outside of Seoul. Against this backdrop, we are doing our utmost to build a city where the dreams and visions of Daegu’s future can be achieved and residents are happy to live. These efforts include designing a ‘high-tech medical complex (Medivalley)’ and a national industrial complex, attracting sound businesses, and creating jobs for youth employment. I am eager to see the DGFEZ play a significant role in fulfilling our vision of building “a Daegu with a solid future,” and “a Daegu for happy citizens” as our city strives to become a global city that leads the creation of wealth for Korea’s future. Once again, congratulations on the 5th anniversary of DGFEZ Authority andtheinauguralpublicationoftheDGFEZMagazine.Thankyou. I would like to join the 5.5 million residents of Gyeongsangbuk-do in congratulating you on the inaugural publication of the DGFEZ Magazine. The development of the free economic zone is equivalent to laying sturdy stepping stones for the vitalization of the local industry and economy as we are faced with the huge mission of boosting the local economy and creating jobs. In fact, with the hopes of realizing the local people’s wishes, DGFEZ Authority has been playing an important role in our local economy by successfully attracting world- class foreign companies such as Boeing from the U.S, and Daicel, NOK Corporation from Japan. For this, I am very thankful and proud of the Authority’s achievements. I expect to hear more good news of this kind as the DGFEZ develops other business districts in the days ahead. In the same way that bellows are used to grow a fire, I hope the newly published DGFEZ Magazine sparks a windfall of investments. In addition, I expect this magazine to be a world-wide public relations Magazine by providing foreign investors with accurate information as well as reliable contents, which of course, should be angled towards them. Congratulations onceagainontheinauguralpublication, andIgivemywarmestwishesfortheDGFEZ’sgreatsuccess. This is a significant year as it marks the start of a new decade since the launch of the Free Economic Zones. So far, the FEZs have made continuous efforts to carry out development projects, rectify systemic flaws, and secure foreign investments. As a result of such efforts, the FEZs were able to attract as much as $2.52 billion in investments last year, the largest ever. Last July, we released the “First Blueprint for FEZs” that revealed the new growth vision and goal for the next ten years. DGFEZ Authority in particular has worked ceaselessly since its opening in 2008 to shape a new growth hub for knowledge-based industries despite difficult economic circumstances. Should tangible outcomes be produced in the fields of IT, transport, machinery parts, and the high-tech medical industry, the DGFEZ will certainly become a new growth model for all the FEZs. Congratulations on the publication of the DGFEZ Magazine, a more strategic, more distinguished marketing tool for investment. I wish you great success as you concentrate all your capacities in winning investments. Magazine13 Mecca of the automotive parts and IT convergence industries The region of Daegu and Gyeongbuk has established itself as a Mecca of Korea’s motor industry, housing the largest cluster of auto parts companies (1,163) that employ 55,000 people and account for 27% of Korea’s total auto parts production. Twenty-nine of those firms amass revenues exceeding 100 billion KRW. Synergy effects are boosted due totheproximityofrelevantR&DinstitutionsincludingtheDaeguCenter of the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), “DGIST”, ETRI’s Daegu and Gyeongbuk Regional Center for the production of embeddedsoftwareplatformforelectricdevicesandtheKITECH(Korea Institute of Industrial Technology) Daegu Gyeongbuk Headquarters. Building a transportation web and rich infrastructure for the parts and materials industry The ‘Yeongcheon High-Tech Parts and Materials Industry District’ was first designated and developed as a ‘general industrial complex’ in June 2006. In light of its geographical proximity and well-developed parts and materials industrial infrastructure however, the district was also newly designated as a free economic zone in May 2008. The objective was to enhance the industry’s competitive edge and stimulate the local economy by bringing in advanced technologies and investments from abroad. With the aim of completing site preparation by August 2013, the construction of the main inner roads and access ramps have been finished and the majority of infrastructure needed for factory operations are now well set. Currently, world-renowned auto parts companies from countries like Japan and France have either already launched operations or are preparing to move into the district by means of exclusive investments or joint venture withKoreancompanies. Land compensation procedures for the site to create a new ‘innovation city’ have been completed in response to the governmental policy to relocate public enterprises to non-metropolitan areas for balanced regional development. The district has great accessibility as it is a 15 minute car ride to and from downtown, 10 kilometers away from the KTX Dongdaegu Station, and 9 kilometers away from Daegu International Airport. The Sinseo Meditech District aims to design the country’s best cutting-edge medical complex that will house global research institutes for medical development. In the district’s vicinity are 227 medicine-related academic departments across eleven medical and pharmacy schools including Kyeongbuk National University(KNU), which supply 20% of Korea’s medical professionals. Clustered are 48 medical R&D institutions, one of which is the only clinical and medical facility in a non-metropolitan area. Moreover, the Cellular Immunology Laboratory (POSTECH) is one of the thirteen government-designated state of the art convergence laboratories in the region. These provide for a medical environment that helps promote a high-tech medicalindustry. Building medical clusters with excellent living conditions for foreigners The investment conditions in the Sinseo Meditech District for securing foreign and domestic private capital to develop new drugs and cutting-edge medical devices look favorable. Designated as the site reserved for the creation of an ‘innovation city’, and one of the ten business districts of the DGFEZ, the Sinseo Meditech District permits the establishment of for-profit medical corporations and guarantees the practice of non-Korean doctors and pharmacists. Foreign employees will also receive tax reductionsaswellasexemptions. Currently, the district is jointly engaged in the establishment of an international regeneration institute with Wake Forest University in the U.S. It also signed an MOU with New Jersey’s medical cluster for cooperation (2009), along with an agreement to jointly foster a U-health industry with New Zealand’s Uniservices. Additionally, it is partnering with the Kobe High-tech Medical Promotion Foundation in Japan to develop new drugs. These efforts are geared at building a network with advanced medical clusters overseas for joint research and cooperation. DaeguMarketcontinuedtogrowandwasrenamed“Seomun Market” in 1922 because it was situated in the western part of Daegu (“seo” means west and “mun” means gate). Covering an area of 27,062㎡ and a building area of 64,902 ㎡, the extensive market sells everything under the sun from hanboks and accessories to bedding, dishware, fresh produce, dried fish, and fresh seafood. Seomun Market has been sustaining the livelihood of the working class ever since its opening. It has been around for so long that there’s really nothing you can’t buy there. Visitors will find shopkeepers of the vast market to be extremely generous. Napjak mandu, a flat dumpling that is unique to Daegu, is the first to entice shoppers. The dish is so popular that the aroma alone has become a trademark of the market. And you can’t leave out seeded hoddeok (flat cakes), kalguksu (noodles),andhandmadesujebi (Koreandumplingsoup). Nationally famous for fabrics Unlike most traditional markets, many of Seomun Market’s customers are young people. College students pick out craft materials for accessories, engaged couples order custom-tailored hanboks for their wedding, and shopkeepers travel from far away to buy fabric. Seomun Market is truly living up to its reputation for carrying some of the best silks, linens and cottons in Korea. The 1950s saw the formation of the country’s largest fabric market, as textile wholesalers clustered in the vicinity. The advantages of belonging to a city with a tradition of textiles enabled it to grow as the largest wholesale market for apparel and fabrics. At its peak in the late 1950s, it was responsible for 40% of transactions among Daegu’s fifteen markets combined. It also played a central commercial role in the provinces of Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, and Jeolla, taking up almost half of the total transaction of textiles in the country. Fashionable clothing shops for the twenties and thirties crowd and entertainment facilities for teenagers are on the rise, attracting younger customers and shopkeepers alike to the market. According to records, the market opened near the end of the Choseon Dynasty and was moved from its first location by the Namcheon River to its present venue in Wansan-dong in 1955. Not only did it connect the city and the rural area, it also served as a meeting place for the residents of Yeongcheon, Daegu, Yeongnam and beyond. The market is most famous for dombaegi, which is the Gyeongsang colloquial name for “shark meat.” Dombaegi” is valued highly in Yeongcheon; it is one of the dishes served during ancestral rituals called “jaesa”. Fish was always hard to find in the inland region. Transportation to and from the East Sea was not only inconvenient, but fish also tended to spoil in transit to Yeongcheon. That is, until salt became available. Fishermen found that by cutting the shark open and pouring salt inside the shark meat could be kept from spoiling for more than two days. The difficult task of salting and airlifting the massive sharks explains why Dombaegi was so precious back then. To this day, Yeongcheon locals make sure to includethepreciousmeatatbanquetsandancestralservices. YeongcheonMarket FlavorsandFlair oftheTraditionalMarkets Open on days ending in 2 or 7 Another source of pride for Yeongcheon Public Market is Gomtang Street, an alley of restaurants specializing in beef- bone soup. The clean and orderly alley can be considered a market in and of itself. The restaurants there receive delivery orders from around the country—showing that they have won the nation’s approval. One bowl of the rich and milky soup will refresh your body during the hot summer. Countless numbers of repeat customers have been buying Gomtang from the alley formorethantwentyyears. Yeongcheon Market is divided into a section for dining and a section for dried seafood and dombaegi, making it convenient for shoppers. DISwasestablishedbyLeeAcademy,acollege-preparatory high school in Maine, situated in the northeastern U.S. Established in 1845, it has a rich legacy. Currently there are around 280 students from 18 countries. Its intensive, yet individualized curriculum encourages self-initiated learning. Lee Academy is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). As a branch campus of Lee Academy, the school offers kindergarten to highschooleducationthatfollowsanAmericancurriculum, uses American textbooks, and is taught by American teachers. Daegu City worked especially hard to open this branch school, knowing that having an international school was critical to inviting foreign businesses to its region. We negotiated with four different schools over the course of five years about the potential joint venture, but they all fell through. At long last, we held hands with Lee Academy, both committed to raising leaders in a global society. Funding to build the school came from Daegu City (12.2 billion won), the central government (9.8 billion won), and LeeAcademy(2milliondollars). What kind of students does DIS strive to raise up? As the school name suggests, we place an emphasis on fostering global leaders with a heart for their neighbors. As part of that effort, students at DIS are engaged in community volunteering such as reading English books to the neighboring Haeseo Elementary School students and partnering with the Daegu Red Cross to serve lunch to the elderlyatDuryuParkandDalseongParktwiceannually What sets DIS apart from other schools? Our school is small enough that all the students know one another. This makes for a great learning environment for students and allows us to offer customized education in accordance with the Lee Academy ideology. Our students perform well academically, too. For this reason, we were fortunate that it did not take long for the ideology of an international school to take root and to achieve stability. Our greatest strength lies in the fact that we are educating future leaders that the world is looking for. A global talent is not just fluent in English, but is able to think globally. DGFEZ has brought to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk region a variety of international events as well as many global businesses. Tangible progress is being made, and companies are actually moving into the district. It brings me great pleasure that the DGFEZ is boosting the economic development of Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and throughout the nation. It is a sizeable company with 153 subsidiaries and 22 R&D Centers across 27 countries, employing 7,660 people. Since its opening in 2010, the Daegu R&D center has been making rapid progress, having already hired the 33 staff ahead of its 2014 target. Eight of the 33 staff have nationalities outside of Korea, showing that Dassault Systèmes truly transcends national boundaries. The Daegu R&D Center aims to expand by hiring talented individuals with diverse backgrounds and become the best of its kind in Asia. Building a nest in Daegu The decision to open up an R&D center in Daegu was not met without opposition at first. There was concern over the inadequate protection of intellectual property rights in Korea. The opposing voices started to die down with the help of the highly supportive Daegu City and DGFEZ. Other factors that helped sway the vote in Daegu’s favor included the abundance of highly skilled researchers in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, not to mention the convenient location of the center. It is situated at the center of town, on the Keimyung University campus, providing for great accessibility and an excellent research environment. Finally, the generosity shown by both the central and local governments acceleratedthemove. Promising future for Daegu R&D Center Dassault Systèmes' Daegu R&D Center carries great significance as the first company to invest and move in to the DGFEZ. It is hoped that the research center will open up opportunities for the small and medium enterprises in Daegu to utilize Dassault Systèmes' highly-developed software. In fact, a variety of economic effects are already being created. The center also signed an MOU with Kyungpook National University and the City of Daegu about industry-university collaboration to train professionals in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for the 3D convergence industry. The Japanese automotive parts company, Daicel, has a global reputation for its meticulous management of the entire manufacturing process from conducting research prior to production to releasing the final product. Manufacturing airbag components, panel displays, ethanol chains and more, Daicel employs upwards of 2,000 workers and grosses 5.1 trillion won in annual revenues. In March 2011, the global company came to Yeongcheon, in order to construct a factory for manufacturing inflators, a gas-generating device for airbags in cars. Since the completion of the factory in April 2013, DSSK has already begun test operations of its equipment. For example, its employees learn foreign languages through language programs and their retirement age is now extended to 60. It is maximizing the number of Korean workers by keeping dispatched Japanese workers to a minimum. Spreading its wings in DGFEZ Before selecting Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk as its factory site, DSSK carefully considered the benefits of the DGFEZ. The incentives stood out first. In addition to cash assistance, the company would receive a 3-year exemption on corporate taxes and 50% reduction for the next 2 years; a 5-year exemption on tariffs for imported capital goods; a full exemption on acquisition taxes; and a 10-year exemption on property taxes and 50% reduction for the next 5 years. And taking into consideration its unfamiliarity of Korean geography, the DGFEZ has been providing the foreign company with professional consultation on licensing, factory establishment, operation, etc. Now all there’s left to do for DSSKistospreaditswingshere. 2 DaicelSafetySystemsKorea,Inc. My Korean ability is not where it should be, but I can understand most conversationsifgiventhecontext. How are you? Please tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m fine thank you and you? My name is Simon Hoggett and I have been the Marketing Manager for Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone since 2009. Originally, I am from Timmins, Ontario, Canada. Timmins is a small city of 50,000 people, located about 8 hours north of Toronto. The natural environment is great, even though it can get a little cold in the winter. I have a beautiful wife, Maria and we are about to celebrate our 5th Wedding Anniversary. Can you tell us about your first thoughts of Daegu and your experiences of Korean culture? My first thoughts of Daegu were… actually I don’t remember, it’s been that long! My first feeling was that the people were nice to me, so my impression was good. Daegu was a little bigger and the people a little louder than I am used to. Everything is ok now, though. In terms of culture, eating together is a way of promoting harmony and social interaction. It’s a little strange for people to eat alone and it’s also uncommon for people to eat with their left hand. Being left-handed and sometimes enjoying a lunch by myself, that part of the culture stuck out in particular Simon Bruce Hoggett

We have an internal message system that we use to send instant messages. That program and Google Translate are very helpful. Basically, Korea is the same as other countries, except that the work is expected to be donefaster.Youknow…BaliBali! What have you been able to accomplish so far while working at DGFEZ? One of the things I’ve been able to add is an expats’ perspective in terms of branding and strategy. One example would be our internal tracking database that I suggested a few years back. Prior to that, information about our meetings and research was stored in each team’s cabinet, or individual PCs without any sort of central organization. Now, the information is stored digitally on our IAM System (Investment Attraction Management). It’s more work for initially, but over the long term it has greatly improve efficiency and strategically in regards to CRM. Another example would be the re-launch of the DGFEZ website in 2012. It was quite a long project. In simple terms, we re-organized and presented our Global Meeting 1 information to be more focused on the needs of investor and site selectors. As a result of our efforts, DGFEZ was ranked 2nd best in terms of Digital Marketing by the Financial Times. Thatwasquiterewardingforourteam. Tell us your plans for the future and any closing words that you wish. It’s the summer time and that has been traditionally a less busy time for us. Magazine49 Adding the dimension of time to the 3rd GLS A synchrotron light source is an electromagnetic radiation emitted when charged particles are accelerated in a vacuum at nearly the speed of light in either a circular or spiral direction by the magnetic field. Think about it as an enormous high power microscope. The microscopic structure of matter can be observed and analyzed by speeding up electrons until radiation is emitted. Though the third-generation accelerator in Pohang emits X-rays, it is not bright enough to allow the observation of atoms or molecules in motion. In contrast, the 4GLSemitsX-rayfreeelectronlasers(XFEL)whoselightisten billiontimesbrighteranddoesnotdisperse. Entering a new world through light Faster than the speed of light, the 4GLS will enable researchers to instantaneously capture processes that the third-generation light source was unable to catch. This makes it possible to observe various types of ultra-fast natural phenomena such as chemical catalytic reactions, molecular binding, and biological responses. Since the 4GLS functions like a camera, filming atomic movement and capturing the internal structure of cells, it can even be used to identify the cause of diseases at the cellular level. The 4GLS also has the ability to see substances with sizes at the nano and femto level, which is not possible while using microscopes, sheds a new ray of hope for the development of next-generation nano- materials. Instantaneous structural analysis of proteins and other microscopic substances can help scientists make new protein-based drugs. The 4GLS will have the added benefit of being cost-effective for researchers because test samples will no longer have to be damaged by X-rays after multiple exposures and desirable results can be attained in just one trial. Pohang, now ready to soar with 4GLS The fourth-generation light source user facility is located in close proximity to the Pohang Fusion Tech District, a district of DGFEZ. Seeking to become the Silicon Valley of Korea in the 21st century, the district will be comprised of R&D institutions that develop and commercialize new technologies and products through industrial convergence. More specifically, the District will focus ongreenenergy, biotech, partsandmaterialstobuild itself as a global hub for convergence technology. Projects to build social-based facilities in the district will likely receive a boost thanks to the 4GLS project, whichwasabletosecure105billionwon(95.3million USD) in funding in 2013. The 4GLS is expected to receive more support, as a project that will make a significant contribution to employment and the economy, not to mention its huge contribution to the advancement of Korea’s high-tech industries.
