Editor's Notes
Example of a project that started as a little idea and turned into a huge success. Contacted by Lucas, former student, about participating in projectAgreed to fundraise to help support his trainingHe wrote us letters and we responded through our blogs. Did biographical research and created a Lucas Wall that showcased his careerGot to Skype before the Olympics and learn more about Lucas and speedskating as a sportSent a sign with me to the Olympics where I watched Lucas’ first race and presented it to him from the classFollowed his races and made him a video of support from the schoolHe was part of the Men’s pursuit team that won a gold medal on Feb. 27thWe celebrated through letters/blogging, creating a giant medal full of messages from the school and organizing a welcome home assembly planned entirely by the students. The Lucas Makowsky Award for citizenship was created for Grades 3-8 and is now presented every June to five students from Grades 3-8.Lucas’ message of believing in yourself, finding your passion, setting goals and working hard really resonated with the students
We are shaping the next generation to take over the world. We need to inspire them to dream big to solve huge problems. Lets give them the skills necessary to succeed in their world.
