World War I involved two opposing alliances - the Allies including Great Britain, France, Russia, and later the United States, versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. After Germany's defeat, it was forced to accept responsibility and pay reparations, while losing territories. New countries like Poland emerged from the defeated empires, and the League of Nations was formed to maintain peace. Nationalism, imperialism, and militarism were underlying causes of the war.

5. Germany’s Punishment
Having to accept full responsibility Germany
was forced to reduce its armed forces and
had to pay the allies $33 billion. German
colonies’ and coal fields’ were also taken
away as punishment for the war.

14. Challenges of the Trenches
The attacks from the enemies artillery
would come from dawn to dusk.
Attacking was a difficult task due to
the enemies’ barbwire and machine
guns.

Mud, rats, trench foot, maggots, lice,
disease, and the cold are all problems
soldiers of World War I faced in the
trenches.

Warfare
The Germans used unrestricted
submarine warfare to sink all ships
headed towards the Allies nations to
have a quick victory on the western
front. To help assure the Germans
would not attack merchant ships
without warning the Germans
promised the Sussex Pledge.

19. Zimmerman Note
A note from an ambassador of Germany
was sent to Mexico asking the Mexican
government to attack the United
States. In exchange the Germans
promised they would aid the Mexicans
in retrieving some of the land that the
US took from the Mexicans.

20. Sinking of Lusitania
The United States was
outraged to hear about a
passenger boat carrying 100
children and 128 Americans
sink because of a German U-
Boat that thought that the
Lusitania was carrying
ammunition and attacked it.

22. Strand the Germans
Americans cut off the German rail
lines and attacked through the
Argonne Forest. It took 47 days and
1.2 soldiers to completely cut off all of
German supplies.

23. War Over
German lines begin to crumble by
October of 1918. By November the
allies have captured the high and
Germany surrenders. On the 11th
hour, 11th day of the 11th month in
1918 the war ends.

24. US in WWI
General Pershing was the leader of the US troops.
There were 1 million soldiers in the United States by
July 1918.
