2. Raster a.k.a. bitmaps
• Raster images use a rectangular grid of picture
elements –pixels – to represent images. Each
pixel is assigned a specific location and color
value.
• Bitmaps are the most common electronic
medium.
• Used for photos and drawings that represent
subtle gradations in color.
3. Raster (con’t)
• Raster images are resolution dependent which
means they contain a fixed number of pixels.
As a result they can lose detail and become
jagged or pixelated as when magnified.
• Can Require large amounts of storage space
4. Vector Images
• a mathematical means of representing
pictures by drawing lines and shapes in
relationship to designated coordinates. The
saved file contains instructions for drawing the
image, which can be enlarged or reduced
without losing quality.
5. Vector
• Vector graphics are resolution independent.
They can scaled and resized without losing
clarity.
• Best choice for artwork such as logos that are
used in various sizes and many different
medias.
• Flash uses Vector Art which is the standard for
web animations.
7. Raster Vector Together
• Flash is Vector Art
• Photoshop is primarily Raster Art
• Flash will support both graphic types
– you can import raster images but not edit them.
8. Raster and Vector Together con’t
– It is important to remember how your artwork
looks on screen may not be how it looks when
printed, rendered or put into its final medium.
