1. Introduction

   The intent of this d oc um ent is to d esc rib e the sp ec ific a tions, op e ra tion, a nd
   p hysic a l a ttrib utes of the V-Pa ss fing erp rint rea d er, Mo d el Num b er V-PASS, A,
   m a nufa c tured b y Biosc ryp t, Inc . The d evic e sp ec ific a tions, insta lla tion
   sp ec ific a tions, a nd c onnec tions a re p rovid ed in d eta il for system a rc hitec ts a nd
   eng ineers d esig ning a c c ess c ontrol a nd other system s utilizing the V-Pa ss rea d er.

2. Description

   The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll p rovid e a 1:Ma ny fing erp rint id entific a tion tha t neg a tes
   the need for c a rd s or PINs. Dep end ing on the firm w a re version, the V-Pa ss sha ll
   sup p ort either a 1:200 or 1:500 fing erp rint id entific a tion. The V-Pa ss sha ll
   a utom a tic a lly d etec t the p resenc e of a fing er on the sensor, c a p ture the
   c a nd id a te fing erp rint a nd c om p a re it a g a inst a d a ta b a se of p reviously enrolled
   tem p la tes. By id entifying the tem p la te tha t m a tc hes the fing er p resented b y the
   user, the V-Pa ss sha ll p rovid e a c onvenient yet sec ure a c c ess c ontrol solution.

3. Mecha nica l Specifica tions

   3.1. Dimensions

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll m ea sure 5.32” x 2.75” x 2.52” (135 x 70 x 64 m m ) a nd
         sha ll a rrive d isa ssem b led . The V-Pa ss sha ll b e c om p rised of:

         A. A w a ll p la te tha t m ounts d irec tly to the w a ll or a sing le-g a ng b ox m ounted
            in the w a ll.
         B. The b od y tha t m ounts to the w a ll p la te.

         A 1:1 sc a le d ia g ra m of this w a ll p la te w ith d imensions is p rovid ed in Fig ure 1:
         V-Pa ss Wa ll Mounting Pla te.

   3.2. Ma teria l

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll b e m a d e of Po lyla c PA-765A, a hig h flo w g ra d e,
         fla m e reta rd a nt m a teria l to a UL94 V-0 sta nd a rd . This m a teria l sha ll b e used
         for the c a se b od y a nd the w a ll m ounting p la te a nd sha ll b e a n ABS p la stic .

   3.3. Fingerprint Sensor

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll inc orp ora te the Authentec , Inc . sensor m od el AF-S2.
         The AF-S2 sensor sha ll b e m a nufa c tured of silic on a nd sha ll b e c a p a c itive-
         b a sed . The sensor surfa c e a rea sha ll m ea sure 24 x 24 x 3.5 m m . The sensor
         sha ll a d d itiona lly inc orp ora te Authentec ’ s TruePrint tec hno lo g y, w hic h utilizes
         a p a tented ra d io freq uenc y (RF) im a g ing tec hniq ue tha t a llow s the sensor to
         g enera te a n im a g e of the sha p e of the live la yer of skin tha t is b uried
         b enea th the surfa c e of the fing er. For m ore inform a tion on this im a g ing

   3.4. Color

         The V-Pa ss c a se sha ll ha ve a c ha rc oa l g ra y b od y (ABS Gra y – Pa ntone 426C).
         Furtherm ore, the c olor used in the “ b iosc ryp t” text sha ll b e Pa ntone 423C.

   3.5. Weight

         The V-Pa ss sha ll w eig h 6.6 ounc es (p a c ka g ed w eig ht for ship p ing sha ll b e 1
         p ound ).

   3.6. Mounting

         The w a ll m ounting p la te sha ll b e d esig ned to m ount to a sing le g a ng
         elec tric a l b ox using 2 # 6-32 sc rew s in the c enterline holes, or to m ount d irec tly
         into a d oor m ullion, w a ll a nc hor, w oo d or sheet m eta l using # 4 fla t hea d
         sc rew s (threa d d ia m eter of <0.125 inc h a nd a hea d d ia m eter o f <0.250 inc h)
         in the 4 outer holes.

         The a c c ess hole in the w a ll for w iring should b e less tha n 1.5” w id e so tha t the
         w a ll p la te w ill c over it. It should a lso b e less tha n 1.5” ta ll if m ounting onto d ry
         w a ll so tha t there is enoug h m a teria l to hold the a nc hor. The rec om m end ed
         size is 1” x 1.125” to m a tc h the op ening in the w a ll m ounting p la te.

         The V-Pa ss b od y c a se sha ll ha ve tw o ta b s tha t slid e into slots on the w a ll
         p la te. The b od y sha ll b e sec ured to the w a ll p la te b y a sing le # 4-40 inc h

   3.7. Mounting Position

         The V-Pa ss should b e m ounted on the w a ll or struc ture to b e in c om p lia nc e
         w ith a ll Am eric a n Disa b ilities Ac t (ADA), loc a l a nd fed era l la w s a s they a p p ly
         to the insta lla tion. The rea d er should a lso b e m ounted a t a heig ht tha t is
         c om forta b le to use. In g enera l, the rea d er should b e m ounted suc h tha t the
         heig ht of the sensor (top of the d evic e) is b etw een 48 a nd 54 inc hes from the
         g round . Should the rea d er b e insta lled b elow this m ounting heig ht (i.e., on a
         turnstile), insta lla tion of a w ed g e p iec e sha ll b e req uired b etw een the
         m ounting surfa c e a nd the V-Pa ss w a ll m ounting p la te. Plea se c onta c t

         Furtherm ore, the rea d er sha ll req uire free sp a c e a b ove the rea d er suc h tha t

         c om m erc ia l environm ent. This eq uip m ent g enera tes, uses, a nd c a n ra d ia te

   5.2. Tempera ture

         The elec tronic s a nd m ec ha nic a l p a rts tha t m a ke up the V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll
         b e ra ted to op era te in a tem p era ture ra ng e of 0 C to 60 C (32 F to 140 F).
         How ever, the extrem es of this tem p era ture ra ng e w ill not b e a c om forta b le
         op era ting ra ng e for users of the system . The tem p era ture ra ng e for the
         environm ent in w hic h the rea d er w ill b e insta lled should b e lim ited to 10 C to
         50 C (50 F to 120 F). Ad d itio na lly, the rea d er should not b e p la c ed in d irec t
         sunlig ht or in unc ontrolled environm ents (ind oors or out).

   5.3. Humidity

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll b e ra ted to op era te w ithin a hum id ity ra ng e of 0% to
         95% non-c ond ensing .

   5.4. Vibra tion

         The environm ent in w hic h the V-Pa ss sha ll b e insta lled should not sub jec t the
         rea d er to vib ra tion.

6. Electrica l Specifica tions

   6.1. Pigta il Connections

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll inc lud e a 15-p in DB15M c onnec tor for externa l
         c onnec tions to p ow er a nd other d evic es. A 15-c ond uc tor c olor-c od ed p ig ta il
         c a b le sha ll b e p rovid ed w ith ea c h V-Pa ss rea d er to fa c ilita te c onnec ting the
         rea d er to other w iring . The rem a ind er of this d oc um ent a ssum es you a re using

         Ad d itiona lly, the p ow er sup p ly should NOT b e:

         If p ow er is to b e d istrib uted to va rious V-Pa ss rea d ers over som e d ista nc e,
         then it is im p orta nt to ta ke into c onsid era tion the resista nc e of the c a b le used
         for p ow er d istrib ution. Sinc e the rea d er sha ll req uire sig nific a nt p ow er levels,
         the c a b le should b e of a p p rop ria te g a ug e (18AWG or b etter is
         rec om m end ed ). Pin 11 should b e c onnec ted to Pow er GND a nd Pin 13
         should b e c onnec ted to +12 VDC p ow er inp ut.

   6.3. Grounding

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll ha ve va rious g round ing req uirem ents:

                 Pow er GND (Pin 11): the return for the inp ut p ow er sup p ly. Pin 11 sha ll
                 b e c onnec ted to the neg a tive on the p ow er sup p ly. Refer to Sec tion
                 6.2: Pow er Req uirem ents for further d eta ils.
                 Wieg a nd GND (Pin 6): the referenc e g round for the Wieg a nd Da ta 0
                 a nd Da ta 1 interfa c e. Pin 6 sha ll b e c onnec ted to the rea d er GND
                 term ina l of the Ac c ess Control System . Refer to Sec tion 8.4: Ac c ess

7. Communica tions

   The V-Pa ss sha ll inc lud e sup p ort for RS-232 a nd RS-485 seria l c om m unic a tions. This
   is p rim a rily intend ed fo r use w ith a PC running the VeriAd m in softw a re, w hic h
   a llow s for tem p la te m a na g em ent (enrollm ents, d eletions, ed itions, d istrib ution)
   a nd rea d er c onfig ura tion. If RS-232 a nd RS-485 c om m unic a tions a re d esired for
   use w ith a n a p p lic a tion other tha n the VeriAd m in softw a re, the BIO-SDK (Biosc ryp t
   Softw a re Develop m ent Kit) sha ll b e req uired to integ ra te V-Pa ss sup p ort into a
   c ustom a p p lic a tion. Refer to Sec tion 11: VeriAd m in Ma na g em ent Softw a re for
   further d eta ils on the softw a re fea tures.

   The V-Pa ss sha ll p rovid e three seria l c om m unic a tions p orts:

           RS-485 a c c essib le throug h the p ig ta il (DB15)
           RS-232 a c c essib le throug h the p ig ta il (DB15)
           RS-232 a c c essib le throug h the b ottom RJ11 p ort

   Only tw o of the three p orts m a y b e a c tiva ted a t a tim e. By d efa ult, the V-Pa ss
   sha ll b e c onfig ured for Port Mod e 1 (Host RS-485 DB15 / Aux RS-232 RJ11), w hic h
   a c tiva tes the RS-485 p ort a c c essib le from the p ig ta il a nd the RS-232 p ort
   a c c essib le from the b ottom RJ11 p ort.

   7.1. RS-485 DB15 Port

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll sup p ort RS-485 seria l c om m unic a tions p rotoc ol
         a c c essib le from the DB15 p ort. This sha ll b e the d efa ult c onfig ura tion for the
         rea d er. For RS-485 p rotoc ol sup p ort, a n externa l c onverter m ust b e utilized .
         Biosc ryp t ha s tested a nd q ua lified the B&B Elec tronic s 485TBLED RS-485/ RS-232
         c onverter for use w ith the V-Pa ss rea d er (m ust b e p urc ha sed sep a ra tely). The
         B&B Elec tronic s c onverter c onnec ts d irec tly to b oth the Host PC a nd to the V-
         Pa ss rea d er. This c onverter sha ll sup p ort “ sense d a ta ,” a lso referred to a s

         “ send d a ta ” . This is nec essa ry sinc e the V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll utilize a ha lf-
         d up lex (2-w ire) RS-485 sig na l w ith no RTS/ CTS c ontrol on the RS-232 line.

         The RS-485 c om m unic a tions p rotoc ol should b e c hosen if a netw ork of m ore
         tha n one V-Pa ss rea d er is b eing insta lled or if a sing le rea d er is b eing insta lled
         m ore tha n 150 feet from the PC or other host. The m a xim um c a b le d ista nc e
         for a RS-485 netw ork is 4,000 feet (1200 m eters), over w hic h no m ore tha n 31
         V-Pa ss rea d ers c a n b e a d d ed . To extend these lim ita tions, c onta c t Biosc ryp t
         Tec hnic a l Sup p ort. No end -of-line term ina tion is req uired a t a b a ud ra te of
         9600. For RS-485 c om m unic a tions, the V-Pa ss rea d ers m ust b e c onnec ted a s
         follow s:

                 Use Ca teg ory 5 ra ted c a b le (shield ed is rec om m end ed ). This c a b le
                 should b e d ed ic a ted to the RS-485 netw ork c onnec tion b etw een the
                 B&B Elec tronic s 485TBLED c onverter a nd the V-Pa ss rea d ers a nd should
                 not b e used for a ny other p urp ose.
                 Use Pin 7 [RS-485 (-)], Pin 8 [RS-485 (+)] a nd Pin 12 [Sig na l GND].
                 The B&B Elec tronic s 485TBLED c onverter sha ll req uire 12VDC/ 100m A
                 p ow er fro m a n externa l sup p ly.
                 Connec t the B&B Elec tronic s 485TBLED c onverter to the PC’ s DB9 COM
                 Port using a DB25-to-DB9 c a b le.
                 Connec t the V-Pa ss rea d ers in a d a isy-c ha in c onfig ura tion (i.e.
                 Converter       Rea d er 1      Rea d er 2     Rea d er 3, etc .). Do NOT use a
                 sta r or other m ulti-d rop c onfig ura tions.

         For a w iring d ia g ra m a nd m ore sp ec ific instruc tions p lea se refer to the
         Config ura tion for Veri-Series Fing erp rint Rea d ers a nd RS-485/ RS-232 Converter
         a p p lic a tion note.

   7.2. RS-232 DB15 Port

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll sup p ort RS-232 seria l c om m unic a tions p rotoc ol
         a c c essib le throug h the DB15 p ort. The V-Pa ss sha ll req uire c onfig ura tion b y
         m ea ns of a n a c tive p ort (RS-485 DB15 or RS-232 RJ11) to a c tiva te the RS-232
         DB15 p ort b y selec ting a Port Mod e of 0 (Host RS-232 DB15 / Aux RS-232 RJ11)
         or 2 (Host RS-232 DB15 / Aux RS-485 DB15). Note tha t if Port Mod e 2 is selec ted ,
         the b ottom RJ11 RS-232 p ort sha ll b e d e-a c tiva ted . The RS-232 p rotoc ol d oes
         not run on a d ifferentia l p a ir of w ires like the RS-485 p rotoc ol, a nd sha ll
         therefore b e less imm une to EMI a nd other noise sourc es. The tra d eoff for RS-
         232 sha ll b e sp eed versus d ista nc e. RS-232 c om m unic a tions d ista nc es a re
         d ep end ent on the b a ud ra te (b p s). For exa m p le, a t 9600 b a ud , a d ista nc e o f

         150 feet is p ossib le using shield ed c a b le, b ut a t 57600 b a ud , a m a xim um o f 20
         feet is rec om m end ed .

         RS-232 c om m unic a tions p rotoc ol should b e c hosen only if a sing le rea d er is
         b eing insta lled less tha n 150 feet from the PC or Host d evic e. For RS-232 DB15
         c om m unic a tions, the V-Pa ss rea d ers m ust b e c onnec ted a s follow s:

                 Use Ca teg ory 5 ra ted c a b le (shield ed is rec om m end ed ). This c a b le
                 should b e d ed ic a ted to the RS-232 c onnec tion b etw een the V-Pa ss
                 rea d er a nd the PC or host d evic e.
                 Use a fem a le DB9 c onnec tor.
                 Connec t Pin 9 (RS-232 Tx) to the DB9 Pin 2.
                 Connec t Pin 10 (RS-232 Rx) to the DB9 Pin 3.
                 Connec t Pin 12 (Sig na l GND) to the DB9 Pin 5.

   7.3. RS-232 RJ11 Port

         The V-Pa ss rea d er sha ll p rovid e a RS-232 RJ11 p ort on the b ottom of the
         d evic e for c onvenient a c c ess. This sha ll b e the d efa ult c onfig ura tion for the
         rea d er. This RJ11 p ort is im p lem ented a s a 6p 6c (6-p osition, 6-c ond uc tor)

         PO WER GROUND. At a m inim um , this c onnec tion should b e m a d e w ith a low -

         g rea ter w ith a VeriAd m in softw a re version of 5.30 or g rea ter. Also , a Custom
         Wieg a nd Form a t file or Pa ss-Thru Fo rm a t sha ll b e req uired to sup p ort
