Demographics Two largest counties in the Capital District Albany (pop. 299,268) Rensselaer (pop. 154,719) Of 25+ age cohort, 88-91% have at least a high school degree Approx. 12% of population is classified as in poverty in both counties 82-90% families with children 71-75% households headed by women
4. Limitations Krieger Regional Talent Pipeline Study Shortage of highly skilled technicians that the current workforce cannot fill Insufficient capacity in the current training system to meet anticipated demands Public schools’ ability to meet the retraining demands severely limited by reductions in state and federal education aid Especially impacts science education which is equipment and supply intensive
5. President Obama Highlighted the Capital District as an area in need of economic stimulus Emphasized the role of the community college in providing highly skilled workers for existing and emerging high-technology employers

High School Equipment Lending Library High schools borrow biotechnology equipment for selected labs to use in Advanced Biology, AP Biology or Forensics Bio-Rad PCR Instructional Lab Package 2 Bio-Rad lab kits with each package Kits support up to 32 students Includes reagents needed for labs Valued at over $7,000 Teacher training and summer workshops Kits available to teachers following training

Internships Provides the student with real-life experience in a laboratory or industry environment Offers a potential employer direct contact with the student’s potential and abilities Structured for two 6-8 hour days/week for 15 weeks during spring term OR four 6-8 hour days/week during the first summer session (6 weeks, May thru June) Stipend of $1,000 to intern site for expenses
