© CAMFIL FARR   11-07-18 Energy Optimisation with  Low Energy Air Filters For example using F7 filter grade as advised by BS:EN13779:2007 Options: 6 pocket 380mm long bag has about 200pa pressure drop initially 12 pocket 635mm long bag has about 85pa pressure drop initially Over a period of one year allowing for the pressure drop increases as the filters work the estimated save in energy consumption as below. **Energy  £300  the difference in filter price is about  £30**  (Ratio 10:1 at 10p per KW/hr.)

  • 20. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-18 Energy Optimisation with Low Energy Air Filters For example using F7 filter grade as advised by BS:EN13779:2007 Options: 6 pocket 380mm long bag has about 200pa pressure drop initially 12 pocket 635mm long bag has about 85pa pressure drop initially Over a period of one year allowing for the pressure drop increases as the filters work the estimated save in energy consumption as below. **Energy £300 the difference in filter price is about £30** (Ratio 10:1 at 10p per KW/hr.)

The fact of the matter is that it offers you as an Energy Assessor a chance to report recommendations of worthwhile energy saving opportunities such as Low Energy Air Filters.
  4. The main area of interest to your client is to save money. This can be achieved with Low Energy Air Filters by reducing the cost of the filters over time because they last longer. The energy consumption is reduced because they have a lower pressure drop. The maintenance costs and disposal costs are reduced because the filters are longer lasting. Other system related costs are also reduced by use of Low Energy Air Filters. All these cost elements are included in the Eurovent Life Cycle costing model (LCC for short) Energy consumption can also be related to the environmental impact of increased levels of CO2 caused . The govenment CRC, Carbon Reduction Commitment is targetting large users of energy such as your clients and taxing them if the
  5. This slide addresses the basic issues involved in using HVAC air filters and shows why Low Energy Air Filters offer benefits for all these points.
  6. The main purpose for using air filters in building air handling units is to supply clean filtered air for the people inside to breathe without risk to health. The secondary purpose of Air Filters in building HVAC systems is to filter the air to keep clean and protect the air plant duct system and the internal fabric of the building. Better filters upstream of the coils and heat exchangers in the system will also inhibit build up of dirt and dust deposits on the coil fins and heat transfer surfaces. Energy loss due to increase in pressure drop across the coils and heat exchangers is prevented. Another benefit is that the coil heat transfer efficiency is preserved for a much longer time. The need coil cleaning and duct cleaning can be reduced with longer periods and saved costs between cleans.
  7. This schematic diagram of an Air Handling unit sho ws the static and dynamic components in the system. The energy to move the air through the system is supplied through the electric motor to rotate the fan. The fan rotates pressurising the air and pushing through the static components in the system.
  8. Filters can account for up to 30% of the total flow resistance of a typical ventilation system – therefore up to 30% of the total energy cost. Yet – filters are readily available that minimise energy cost and can be easily upgraded. Filters dramatically affect the energy consumption
  9. Simple energy calculation E is energy in kWh per year Airflow is easily calculated if design airflow is not readily available Each full size filter is designed for 0.94 m3 per second ( or rounded to 1) So 4 filters = 4 m 3 /sec dP Pressure drop is measured in Pascal across the filter bank Average dP over the life of the filter affects energy consumption Providing the fans have inverters (if they haven’t you are paying a lot of money for energy) T is time in hours (so continuous is 8760 hours) h or is fan efficiency (the average is 50%) His gives you Watts so need to divide by 1000 to get kWh This can be seen in the specification or the Life Cycle Cost Software (LCC)
  10. Quality of manufacture of Air Filters is important. To produce Low Energy Air Filters in bag filter form it is necessary to make media pockets with controlled media spacing. The pockets have a tapered profile to allow even flow of air across the full area of the media. Any contact between media pockets stops air flow and increases pressure drop across the filter.
  11. This is a typical example of a city centre office block that now requires an Air conditioning inspection and report. Considerable energy savings can be made if Low Energy Air Filters are recommended.
  12. A two stage filter system can often be replaced by a single stage system. The energy saving is indicated above. For a recommended F9 solution (EN13779:2007) a 2 stage F7 solution can be used. This will still show a 40% saving over the original G4 panel and F7 bag filter system shown.
  13. This Low Energy Air Filter is the most efficient LCC solution for both particulate efficiency and energy efficiency. It has the longest life compared to any other F7 filter class on offer for HVAC applications.
  14. Your Larger AC Inspection clients will be managing property portfolios that can number many hundreds of commercial properties. This impact slide indicates the estimated savings possible with a large number of sites.
  15. The Life Cycle cost elements listed here show the cost elements of the Eurovent LCC model. The bulk of the savings are in the energy consumption which is typically between 70% and 80% of the model. The other elements, in particular the maintenance costs can also show significant savings. Generally a saving can be made in each one of these elements.
  16. This slide represents the opportuniy that is available for energy and cost savings when poorly maintained AHU filter systems are indentified during your inspections. This photo shows an AHU filter bank on a prestige hotel site just off the M4. The filter mounting frames have corroded and collapsed allowing unfiltered air to bypass the filters and deposit airborne dust and dirt downstream on all surfaces and into the building.
  17. This is truly a quick win If you compare to other elements within the AHU the decision is a simple one It can be done straight away without capital cost
  18. The opportunity shown on the previous slide needs to be reported and a solution provided. There are a variety of Low Energy Air Filter solutions available that can be tailored for the needs of each individual AHU system.
