This document is a script that tells the story of two hospital patients, Colin and Adam, who are in adjacent beds in a ward. Colin is able to see out the window by his bed, while Adam is unable to see due to his injuries. Adam grows frustrated by Colin's descriptions of the view and jealous that he cannot see it. When Colin dies in the night, Adam convinces the nurse to move him to Colin's bed by the window. However, when Adam finally looks out, he discovers there is only a brick wall outside.
2. INT.HOSPITAL. MONTAGE
A montage sequence of a standard state hospital. the wheels
of a trolley bed. As the montage unfolds and conversations
can be heard.
COLIN(V/O)
my wife is so....(Colin discusses
his wife and family-improv)
ADAM(V/O)
Ohh and she...(discusses his wife
and family
montage of nurses and receptionists. Doctors with
stethoscopes.
ADAM(V/O)
(discusses his job and time in
the army)
COLIN(V/O)
(discusses his experiences)
long hallways. gleaming floors
TITLE: WINDOW
The sequence ends facing a door into a ward.
The sound of cardio beeps.
INT. WARD. DAY
A heart machine beeps.
A big red emergency button.
A very plain ward with only two beds in it. One bed is near
a window the other against a wall a little further back. Sat
in a chair looking out of the window in hospital clothing is
COLIN a skinny 30 year old with blond scruffy hair. He has
tubes going in and out of his nose and is wired up to a
drip. On the other bed in hospital clothes is ADAM, a dark
haired larger man in his 30’s. He is lying on his bed unable
to move with a metal brace around his head. He anxiously
looks across in the direction of COLIN.
ADAM
well. anything good?

COLIN
(Improv - what he can see
outside the window)
A young Nurse enters the ward. She is in her early twenties
very good looking with a friendly disposition.Colin and Adam
watch her carefully. She comes through the door.
NURSE
ok Colin, your hour’s over, its
time to lie back down
She helps Colin lie down on the bed.
NURSE
Is there anything, I can get you
Adam?
ADAM grunts.
EXT. HOSPITAL. DAY.
The Hospital sits in a soup of grey miserable weather
INT. WARD.DAY
Both Adam and Colin are lying down. There is silence. The
beeping of the sound monitor goes off. Adam sighs.
ADAM
It’s time
The NURSE comes in and once again.
NURSE
Hello. time to sit up again Colin.
COLIN
Hi.
COLIN looks unhappy. The NURSE smiles and props Colin
upright in his bed with difficulty. The nurse checks Colin
is in the correct position and leaves. Colin stares out the
window looking miserable.
COLIN
It’s raining.
ADAM
ye, what else?
(CONTINUED)

COLIN
(IMPROV - what he can see
outside the window. except
this time Colin is less
enthusiastic to explain.)
ADAM
come on details...you know it’s
really not fair that you can see
out that window and I can’t. God if
I could see you that window I would
describe everything.
Colin voluntarily lies back down in his bed. He looks fed
up.
ADAM
hey, what the hell are you doing?
COLIN
I’ve had enough for today
ADAM
dude, come on don’t be like that
COLIN
I’m sorry Adam but I’m tired and my
chest hurts.
Adam looks furious. He shuts his eyes.
INT. WARD. DAY
The NURSE returns to the ward and is surprised to see COLIN
lying down.
NURSE
Colin you shouldn’t lie down
without me helping you. Why don’t
you want to sit upright?
COLIN
I’m sorry, I feel too good.
ADAM grunts.
The NURSE looks worried.
NURSE
I better take your temperature.
The NURSE walks over to COLIN and sticks a thermometer in
his mouth. There is silence. The thermometer beeps.
(CONTINUED)
5. CONTINUED: 4.
NURSE
Well you haven’t got a
temperature. I’ll be back to check
on you later.
The NURSE leaves.
INT. WARD. NIGHT
ADAM and COLIN are asleep and it seems peaceful, until Colin
begins to cough violently. He tries to reach for the big red
button on the wall but he can not reach. He struggles.
Adam stares looking angry, he reaches over to press his own
red button but suddenly he catches a glimpse of moonlight
coming from the window and he realizes that the death of his
friend could be the key to moving next to it. He lies back
down and falls back to sleep. The sound of the coughing
stops.
INT. WARD. DAY
The nurse wheels a Colin’s body bag on a bed out of the
room. There is nothing next to the window.
The nurse comes back in. Her expression is solemn.
NURSE
I’m sorry Adam. Colin didn’t make
it, he passed away in his sleep
last night. I know how close you
two were. Would you like some time
alone?
ADAM
yes please. (pause) actually, could
I be moved next to the window? I
think its what Colin would have
wanted...
Adam looks unsure of what he is saying but is trying to
sound convincing.
NURSE
are you sure?
Adam nods.
Nurse wheels Adam’s bed next to the window.
(CONTINUED)
6. CONTINUED: 5.
NURSE
I’ll give you some time.
She leaves and shuts the door behind her.
Adam with an excited expression on his face, finally hoists
himself up on his elbows (even though this is dangerous in
his condition) to catch his first glance out of the window.
His face is stunned with shock, he gasps. There is nothing
but a brick wall outside of the window. Adam looks up to the
ceiling realizing what he has done. Fade out.
