Project Objective:
The intent of this project is to explore emerging material properties in order to design innovative
product concepts with consideration to true user needs and integration of brand and lifestyle, which will
set it apart from competitors.

The company and area of focus is Reebok and footwear, such as Running, Women’s Fitness,
Basketball, Football, Soccer, Tennis, Cross-Training, or a Sport-Inspired Lifestyle Shoe, etc.
The footwear design may be an addition to an existing product line or for a new product line.

Project Description:
Phase I – Background/Research
From the first assignment, getting familiar with Reebok, further research and understand chosen
product line, with a deep understanding of (1) brand language and lifestyle, (2) user needs, (3)
competitor analysis, and explore (4) currently used materials and manufacturing processes in the
footwear industry as well as (5) potential emerging materials and manufacturing processes that could be
applied to new innovative concept.

Phase II – Concept Exploration/Continued Research
Apply information gathered from research and create concepts exploring various properties and
possibilities. Keep in mind and address user needs, materials and manufacturing in your design
concepts. Really push yourself to think outside of the box!

Phase III – Concept Refinement and Presentation
You will select one concept from Phase 2, to fully develop and present, including illustrator renderings
and detailed specs/call outs showing features of design, and chosen colors (can include different color
options), chosen materials (with sources info about material), and proposed manufacturing process and
details (final presentation, poster, and process book).

Project Outcomes: The following project outcomes indicate competencies and measurable skills that
students develop as a result of completing this project:

    • Application of emerging manufacturing materials and processes integrated with holistic
approach, considering and addressing user needs and brand.
    • Familiarity with innovative material applications.
    • Pushing the boundaries in idea generation and concept generation, while balancing feasibility.
    • Thorough understanding material and process specification in the product design process.

Project Deliverables:
   • 10 minute research and material/manufacturing presentation for Part 1. [electronic]
   • Phase 1 Concept Sketch Packet, will be pinned up and critiqued
   • Phase 2 Concept Sketch Packet, will be pinned up and critiqued
