2. Digital Citizenship Overview
O Millennials (our students) leading the way
with technology use
O Digital citizenship: responsible and
appropriate use of technology to more
effectively participate in society
O Task to enable students to make
responsible digital choices falls on
EVERYONE’S shoulders!
3. The Issue
O Cyberbullying (hurting, embarrassing
another student/group) is prevalent in our
school
O 43 percent of teens have been
cyberbullied in some format (NCPC)
O According to Pew, 95 percent of all U.S.
teens aged 12-17 are using the Internet.
O In one month, one percent of discipline
referrals involve cyberbullying on school
grounds
4. Goal - Summative
In one school year, reduce
discipline referrals
involving cyberbullying to
five (currently, about 45)
5. Goals - Formative
O Goal 2: Create two seminars for teachers
O Goal 3: Implement year-long digital
responsibility unit
O Goal 4: Increase adult volunteer presence
O Goal 5: Increase student response scores
on questionnaire
6. Teacher Seminars
SEMINAR 1 (Teacher Workday, Aug. 2012)
O Introduction to cyberbullying
O Presentation by Dr. Jenny Walker, expert
O Starting materials distributed (educator’s guide,
student survey)
SEMINAR 2 (Teacher Workday, Jan. 2012)
O Focusing on implementation of prevention in the
classroom
O Presentation by Scott Johnson, parent of student
who was cyberbullied
O Gauge progress and motivation on prevention
7. Designing digital
responsibility unit
O Year-long in homeroom; required to
receive diploma
O Curriculum includes pre-tests, blog
creation, an interview, viewing of
documentary, and interaction with guest
speaker
O As end-of-unit assessment, students will
create a 1-minute public service
announcement video to discuss dangers
of cyberbullying
8. Increase parent/adult
volunteer numbers
O Parent/adult visibility in and out of
school is paramount!!!
O Currently 8 parent volunteers; goal to
have 16
O Mailing/e-mailing information home
O Callout meeting for volunteers
O Free background checks
O Placement in main
office, classrooms, computer labs and
locker rooms
9. Increase student response
scores
O Adding a data-centered component
O Students given a copy of questionnaire;
questions ask about background knowledge
of and personal experience with cyberbullying
O Confidentiality stressed
O More background knowledge results and less
experience with cyberbullying = higher scores
O Data will be used to modify the existing action
plan for the following school year
10. Conclusion
O Cyberbullying is a fairly new phenomenon
but becoming a crisis in America’s schools
O Adolescents’ need to belong and conform
coupled with the use of technology like
computers and mobile-equipped cell
phones is creating the problem
O We hope to accomplish our summative
goal of cyberbullying reduction by the end
of the 2012-13 school year.
