regularly who equate organizing with decluttering. "All you need to be
organized is having a good clear out once in a while." "Once I get rid of all the
stuff I don't need, I will be organized, right?" Wrong.
In most cases decluttering is necessary on the road to organization but it is
only a first step. Decluttering means getting rid of items you no longer need
and want. It is the process of going through your belongings, sorting and
deciding what is trash, what can be donated or sold, what can be recycled and
finally what is kept.
What then remains are all the items you need, want and love. And these items
now need to be organized. You need to come up with a system that makes
sense to you and fits into your lifestyle. This system is a way of storing your
belongings, displaying some of them and making sure they are easily
retrievable. And this process is organizing.
The final step is maintenance. Only with regular maintenance is it possible to
stay organized. This often includes regular decluttering sessions, such as going
through your wardrobe every season weeding out what you haven't worn or
checking through your children's belongings to see what they have outgrown.
But maintenance also means keeping up with the system you installed to corral
your items and tweaking it if need be.
So it is quite easy to see that decluttering is a tool on the path to becoming
organized but it does not lead to organization on its own. It is like saying once
you've built the walls of a house you're done. You still need a roof, plumbing,
electricity, flooring, décor and furniture before you can actually move in.

2. Depending on how much stuff you actually have, decluttering can be a very
large part of organizing, however, and take up most of the time. It can also be
quite exhausting since you are constantly making decisions on what needs to
go and what needs to stay. It can be quite emotional and stressful especially if
you are taking this step after a divorce or after the death of a loved one. You
might want to consider doing this together with a good friend or close relative
