Forensic science is the analysis and interpretation of evidence that is part of a legal investigation process. It has its origins in Latin and the earliest known forensic autopsy was performed in 44 BC on Julius Caesar. In the modern era, fingerprinting of criminals began in 1906 in New York City and DNA evidence was first used to solve a crime in 1986 in England, identifying Colin Pitchfork as the murderer of two young girls. Forensic science has advanced identification techniques through toxicology, fingerprint analysis, and DNA profiling.
