11. JANET Acceptable Use Policy
• Keep network fast/open/flexible
– But deal with harmful/disruptive activities
• Orthogonal to other JANET policies
– Connection (who can connect)
– Security (Site/User/JANET responsibilities)

12. Who/What is Covered
• Primary connections agree (by contract)
– Traffic they send/receive will comply
• Doesn’t apply to internal networks
• Unless you decide that it does (feel free)
– Take reasonable steps to discourage breach
– And deal effectively when it happens
• Primary responsible for those it connects
– Users and sponsored sites

13. What is “Acceptable”?
• Purpose of communicating with other
organisations, individuals and services
attached to networks, reachable by JANET
• May be used by a User Organisation and its
Members for any lawful activity that is in
furtherance of the aims and policies of the User
Organisation
• Organisation must ensure its Members adhere
to JANET AUP and current legislation

14. What is “Unacceptable Use”?
• Anything illegal
• Things that education networks don’t do
• Anti-social things

• Breach of AUP of remote network
• Breach of good practice which is likely
to damage the reputation of JANET

16. Use of JANET in BCE
• To collaborate with a business or
community partner also connected directly
to JANET because the nature of the
collaboration requires the special
characteristics of JANET, rather than rely
upon the partner’s Internet connection
• As its network supplier when it is itself
supplying IT services to a business or
community partner.
