2. COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course is concerned with exposing the
students of Pharmacy and Dentistry to the
principles of First Aid.
By the end of the course, the students of Pharmacy
and Dentistry should be able to deal with the
principles and practices of First Aid and basic
resuscitation procedures.

3. Management of Acute Poisoning
4. Bleeding disorders
5. Causes and management of shock

9. General Trauma measures (polytrauma)
10. Orientation Lecture for Adult CPR
11. Orientation Lecture for Pediatric CPR
12. Demonstration of Adult CPR – Skill Lab

5. Specific Objectives
The students should have knowledge about each of following as outlined here:
1: Snake bite/Stings
History taking and identifying the type of bite/sting types of venomous
snakes, their systemic effects.
Immediate measures in various bites/ stings, especially snake bites
Investigations required
Complications and their brief management and various antidotes
2. Acute poisoning
History taking and brief account about various common poisons
Clinical features and management of various common poisons
3. Bleeding Disorders
Acute blood loss, pathophysiology of blood loss and initial clinical assessment
Management of important causes of bleeding, hematological disorders.

Initial assessment of Burns
Management of pain, Fluid loss, and Local wound
5. Shock
Different types of shock and their etiology and pathophysiology
Clinical recognition and Management of shock
6. Wounds
Types of wounds, Immediate management, Wound debridement and dressing
Factors affecting wound healing.
7. Foreign body swallowing
Types of foreign bodies in different age groups, sites of foreign body lodging
Diagnosis , immediate management and definitive management

Initial assessment of a patient with polytrauma including ABCs
Specific measures related to various traumas
Spinal trauma, Chest trauma and Fractures.
9. CPR
Importance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Importance of time factor in the provision of CPR
Organic and physiologic basis for the application of CPR
Anatomical and physiological aspects of CPR
Important causes and pathophysiology of cardiac arrest in children and
adults.
Basic Life Support (BLS), both in adults and in children.
Practical training about the CPR separately for Adults and Children
