2. •Don Facundo Bacardí Massó founded the
Bacardi distillery in Santiago de Cuba in 1862.
Since then, the Bacardi family has figured
prominently in shaping his company as it
expanded outside of Cuba to become the
world’s largest privately owned spirits
company.
3. •Bacardi rum won acclaim in Cuba for its
smoothness and light character. Production of
the rum quickly became a family business.
Don Facundo isolated a specific strain of
sugarcane yeast that is used in the rum. His
wife selected the bat as the basis for the
company’s iconic logo. Toward the end of the
19th century, his son José brought Bacardi to
a new environment by opening a sales office
in Havana.
4. •The Bacardi family maintains a key role in the
business of the company today. Chairman
Facundo L. Bacardi is a fifth-generation
member of the family and the great-great
grandson of the founder. While the family has
brought in experienced executives to help run
Bacardi, it still maintains ownership of the
business that Don Facundo started under a tin
roof more than 150 years ago.
