4. Definition
Situs Inversus totalis is a genetic condition that causes the
organs in the chest and abdomen to be positioned in a
mirror image from their normal positions.
• Eg. In the abdominal cavity, the liver is positioned on the
left side instead of the right, and the stomach is on the
right side instead of the left.

7. Prevalence
Situs inversus totalis has been estimated to occur
once in about (8-10,000) births.
20% of patients with situs inversus have a rare
abnormal condition called Kartagener's syndrome.
Only 50% of patients with Kartagener syndrome
have situs inversus
8. Types
Situs inversus totalis
Situs inversus thoracalis
Situs inversus abdominalis
All organs are transposed in a mirror image of the normal positioning
Only lungs and heart
Liver, stomach and spleen
10. Possible Cause !
• Mutation in the coding region of
DNAH11(Bartoloni et al., 2002).
• Developmental stage of an embryo !
11. Signs and Symptom
• No medical symptoms or complications .
• 3-5% have functional heart defect
• 25% have an underlying condition called primary
ciliary dyskinesia (PCD)
12. Diagnosis
It can be detected using
• X-ray
• CT
• MRI
• Ultrasonography
A doctor/RT may suspect
• Heartbeat ?
13. Treatment
• No cure for situs inversus.
• If other complications are present, the
symptoms will be treated accordingly.
14. Special concerns !
• Failure to recognize situs inversus ?
• Attention to the left and right sides of the patient and
the left and right labeling of images .
• Organ donation !
autosomal recessive genetic condition.(unaffected parents have 1in 4 chance)
Kartagener's( is a rare hereditary disease caused by a gene defect. The defect is considered to be “autosomal recessive.” This means that an individual must inherit the gene from both parents in order to be affected.), This condition causes abnormalities of the respiratory tract as chronic sinusitis + bronchiectasis+transposition of the organs.
A person is said to have dextrocardia if the point of the heart is on the right side.
A person is said to have levocardia if the heart is on the left side, yet the other remaining organs are flipped.
not yet been determined
( the tube-like structure that becomes the heart forms a loop toward the left, identifying the left/right axis along which the other organs should be positioned
have no medical symptoms resulting from the condition
-causes mucus buildup in the lungs. This can lead to chronic bronchitis and sinusitis
Because the condition rarely causes symptoms and is so rare, a person may have come in for an entirely different reason
The heartbeat is typically loudest at the lower point of the heart on a person’s left side. However, a person with situs inversus can have a heart whose apex points to the right. In this case, the heartbeat would be loudest on the right side.
*may result in intervention on the incorrect side in the patient.
*is helpful to prevent mistakes in diagnosis and/or surgical intervention.
we must pay attention to the simplest details for it may have a great effect on a person's life
