1. Throughout this course, we have learned about many things regarding computer application in language learning and how if affect on the achievement of language learning. As for our last assignment on corpus linguistic, we were assigned to do about lexicography. This area is very important since lexical items contribute to the data about the language itself. From the selections of raw data taken from selected corpus either written or verbal to the compilation of words into book that is what we known as ‘dictionary’ is noteworthy. We acknowledge about the importance of people who are ‘behind the scene’ in compiling the dictionaries that are known as the lexicographers.
It is imperative for students especially those who are taking English language in knowing about lexicography since we can highlight on how words are changing, what part of speech they are belong to, and even about the historical marks in relation to certain words. In our course, we have come across with different subjects that can be related to one another. For instances, in lexicography, we were exposed on how words are changing through time and why it is changed. This can be related to the history of English language when we were recalled about our previous knowledge on word changes and what are the main source or reason of this event took place.
Selecting the right corpus also affect on the accurateness of the data. In making a dictionary, it must fulfill the need of people. If words that put in the dictionary are not used by users, it is meaningless. Therefore, it gave us some basic idea on how we should collect our data without making prior judgement on the relevancy of such data. For example, the corpus that is used in social networks for instances facebook and twitter can contribute to the corpus which is used by the teenagers.
