BATTLING FUD AT MCPL
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
17. Monroe County Public Library (MCPL):
What We Have Been Doing
•
One hour, one-on-one sessions for patrons with
reference staff members for basic tech topics – patrons
work with me for more in-depth requests:
http://goo.gl/PS4DxK
•
Reference staff members are in the one-on-one rotation
for two months at a time, and then a new group (6-8
staff members) rotates in to take over these duties
•
Children’s staff members also do one-on-ones separate
from the main program (targeted at kids/parents)
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
18. What We Have Been Doing (cont.)
•
Surveying patrons (online and face-to-face) to discover what
technology programming they are interested in, and putting
on the schedule in three month cycles (i.e. Sept.-Nov.)
•
Creating brochures and sitting out in various services points
within the library, WorkOne, and other area learning centers,
promoting in local media, giving presentations to groups, etc.
•
Observing trends at the reference desk and/or in one-on-one
session requests – planning for big events like holidays (i.e.
lots of patrons getting new mobile devices for Christmas)
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
19. FUD Encountered at MCPL
One-on-Ones:
• The demand for one-on-ones has skyrocketed – both
the basic requests and the in-depth requests
•
Questions we have asked ourselves:
•
•
•
Should we focus more on one-on-ones? YES
Should we set limitations on one-on-ones? Possibly –
becomes a staffing issue eventually
Is this how patrons most prefer to get over their FUD? True for
some, but not all
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
20. FUD Encountered at MCPL (cont.)
Group Technology Programs:
• Even with prerequisites noted (beginning and
advanced courses offered) – still a wide mix of skill
sets in technology programs – everyone on a
different page
• It’s hard to successfully remove FUD from patrons if
they don’t get the individualized attention they
need in a group setting
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
21. FUD Encountered at MCPL (cont.)
Group Technology Programs:
• Attendance numbers in technology programs are not
good – averaging between 3-4 each program
• Questions we have asked ourselves:
•
•
•
•
Is it the programs we are offering? We don’t believe so –
patrons have been surveyed
Can patrons keep up in a group setting? In some cases no –
volunteers have been used to assist patrons to keep programs
moving along
Is this how patrons most prefer to get over their FUD? True for
some, but not all – as evidenced by the growth in one-on-one
sessions
Is it an issue with the time/day or length? We don’t believe so –
we have offered programs on all days, times, and lengths

22. Where We Are Headed
One-on-Ones:
• More of a focus on the one-on-one sessions – very
popular, possibly involve more staff members
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
23. Where We Are Headed (cont.)
Group Technology Programs:
• Becoming more of an embedded librarian: Taking
the programming out into the community
•
•
Great success partnering with a local retirement
community in recent months (going to them and them
coming to us)
More partnerships with community groups – have
worked with a college student-run Technology
Management Club for Excel programming for the past
year
#ILF13 | Everyday Superheroes in the Library | Indianapolis, IN | Oct. 21-23, 2013
24. Where We Are Headed (cont.)
Group Technology Programs:
• Classroom-style technology programs still offered on
an on-demand basis
•
•
•
•
Groups or patrons can request a program from a list that
will be advertised around the library, area learning
centers, and in local media
If at least five patrons (or a group) show an interest, it will
be put on the schedule at a time that works for the
majority
One-on-one sessions will be offered for patrons that
cannot make the decided time
Less staff time used in guessing how to deal with FUD and
more of a style that can adjust with patron demand

30. Principles of andragogy
1. Adults need to be involved in the planning
and evaluation of their instruction.
2. Experience (including mistakes) provides the
basis for learning activities.
3. Adults are most interested in learning
subjects that have immediate relevance to
their job or personal life.
4. Adult learning is problem-centered rather
than content-oriented.
