- Libraries offer a myriad of programs, services, resources and tools for education, entertainment, employment and more
- Libraries are everywhere you want to be – more than 357 public libraries in Minnesota; 100% offer computers and internet access
- All shapes, all sizes, all supported by cities and counties committed to learning, literacy, and a high quality of life
- While all of Minnesota’s libraries offer internet access and computers, what is available doesn’t always meet demand
- Our goal today is to provide information that helps you understand the essential role that libraries play in Minnesota, and to engage you in thinking about the future
- A short video that encapsulates the impact of libraries nationwide
- One of the essential roles for libraries is to provide access to those who don’t have it at home or at work. Libraries provide a stable infrastructure and are a reliable resource that serves everyone in the community.
- Programs and services that respond to the unique needs of seniors are growing at a fast pace – adaptive technology like screen readers and screen enlargers can temper the impact of vision loss, for example. The people connection is just as important for elders as young people – and requires that we have staff skilled in working with these needs.
- Libraries have ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of non urban residents even as shifts happen – the perceived ease of ‘its on the internet’ masks the challenges of adequate access and skills for the people we serve
- Responding to diverse communities is at the heart of creating inclusive communities. Providing services in alternative languages may become more critical – technology offers some benefits, but can’t replace people. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders – and will have different needs, expectations and experiences.
- Tax information and forms have for years been a primary partnership. Affordable Care Act is the most recent example.
- Online training that builds capacity – ramp up quickly to respond. Recorded and available 24/7 – but needs differ from state to state.
- While trained navigators and assistors will be available through many organizations, libraries, because of location, hours and technology, are likely to see many visitors in need of information.
- Leveraging community partnerships to meet community needs beyond traditional literacy
- Our goal today was to Inform, Excite and Enlighten you about the role that libraries play in ensuring that all residents have access to the critical tools of technology and a chance to build skills that will allow them to move ahead in their lives
- Libraries have come a long way since 1973. I don’t even want to guess how little data these tapes stored
- The ratio of size to date continues to shrink
- We can be the change we want to see in the world. Libraries can become centers of content creation.
- Minnesota is currently at 20 gigabits, likely to be at 60 in two years, and 100 in three. How will we get the bandwidth capacity we need? By creatively leveraging resources and partnerships that build strong networks.
- What will the future look like? While we can’t predict the future, we can predict we’ll be ready for it.
