"After climate change, commercial fishing represents the
greatest threat to life in our oceans. As well as ruthlessly fishing out
stock after stock, the way we fish has disastrous consequences
for other species and entire ecosystems – but the damage being done is
out at sea, out of sight, and out of mind for most people. We need to
take drastic action to repair the damage we’ve done to our oceans
                             before it’s too late."

THE GLOBAL COMMONS
                    DID YOU KNOW,
YOU CAN CLAIM 2 HECTARES OF THE OCEAN?
(surface area of ocean /number of people on Earth)

“The commons is a new way to express a very old idea—that some forms of
wealth belong to all of us, and that these community resources must
be actively protected and managed for the good of all.

The commons are the things that we inherit and create jointly,
and that will (hopefully) last for generations to come.

The commons consists of gifts of nature such as air, water, oceans and wildlife
as well as shared social creations such as libraries, public spaces,
                   scientific research and creative works”.
WHAT IS WORKING AND
HOW CAN WE DO MORE OF IT?

     3 SUCCESS STORIES
ALASKA
The secret to Alaska’s success lies in two basic principles:

• Responsible fisheries management and sustainable
fishing practices take care not to harm the fish, other
marine plants and animals, nor the environment

• And fish populations are never overfished.
MacFARLAND SPRINGS LASSEN, CA

                   MacFarland marks the movement of
                   farming fish towards organic farming
                   techniques, where chemicals are not
used and the feed source is natural to
                   the farmed product.

                   Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR*)
                   around .25 to 1 – an environmental
                   breakthrough.

                   By comparison, a traditional farmed
trout has a FCR in excess of 4 to 1.
VETA LA PALMA SEAFOOD, SPAIN

“A farm that doesn't feed its animals

A farm that measures its success by
             the health of its predators

A farm that's literally a water purification plant”
                    -Dan Barber, chef

"Fish? I didn't know anything about fish.
           I'm an expert in relationships."
                   -Miguel, biologist
WHAT YOU CAN DO
EATING
 • Stop eating fish
 • Eat fish less often, consider Fish Free Fridays
 • Eat locally caught seafood that is in season
 • Be adventurous, learn to eat new fish
 • Learn who caught your fish
 • Get the facts
PURCHASING
 • Support restaurants that are doing the right thing
 • Support your local fisherman
 • Educate yourself and make informed purchases
 • Does your fish tastes like chicken? Ask about
farmed fish conversion ratios, how many pounds of
feed did it take to grow this fish?

ADVOCACY
 • Educate someone about sustainable seafood
 • Join Oceana and become a wave-maker
 • Protect your share of the Global Commons
TREATY

A treaty is an express agreement under
international law entered into by actors in international
law, namely sovereign states and international organizations.
A treaty may also be known as an (international) agreement,
protocol, covenant, convention or exchange of letters,
                      among other terms.

Treaties can be loosely compared to contracts: both are
means of willing parties assuming obligations among
themselves, and a party to either that fails to live up to their
obligations can be held liable under international
                            law.

THE WORLD OCEAN PROTOCOL
A TREATY FOR THE GLOBAL COMMONS
  WORLD OCEAN PROTOCOL,
A TREATY FOR THE GLOBAL COMMONS

  PURPOSE
The purpose of this treaty and its subsequent protocol is to establish an International Standardized System of Global
Oceanic accountability and stewardship. The Ocean is the largest asset of the Global Commons, shared by all Global
Citizens. As Global Citizens we agree to hold our countries, nations, governments and businesses accountable for Right
Stewardship of our Common Collective Oceanic Asset and to protect it from further ruinous practices and selfish
interests of those who would profit by illegal means and measures.

  APPLICATION AND SCOPE
This Protocol affects all nations, all citizens and all species of Planet Earth.

Each county shall sign and agree to the Protocol. Any non compliant and non signatory nation will face consequences in
accordance with the measures and limits determined by the Rights of Nature Agreement for any Ocean Citizens
captured until signing the agreement. The desired goal is that all Global Citizens shall have equal access to the natural,
social and economic privilege provided by the Oceanic Commons. Is is the desire of all citizens to avoid unintended
  consequences wherever possible.

  EFFECTIVE DATE
The effective date of The World Ocean Protocol, when the policy comes into effect, is to be in accordance with as yet
to be established global holiday known as World Ocean Day, to be inaugurated on July 22, 2011.

WILL YOU HELP MAKE OCEANIC PROTECTION A REALITY?
The "great work" facing humanity, is to move from mindlessly
extracting and consuming the earth's resources
to establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with nature.”
                      THOMAS BERRY

  • 8. One per cent of the world's Industrial fishing fleets account for 50 per cent of the world's catches. - CNN "After climate change, commercial fishing represents the greatest threat to life in our oceans. As well as ruthlessly fishing out stock after stock, the way we fish has disastrous consequences for other species and entire ecosystems – but the damage being done is out at sea, out of sight, and out of mind for most people. We need to take drastic action to repair the damage we’ve done to our oceans before it’s too late."  Willie Mackenzie, Oceans Campaign, Greenpeace United Kingdom

  • 15. THE GLOBAL COMMONS DID YOU KNOW, YOU CAN CLAIM 2 HECTARES OF THE OCEAN? (surface area of ocean /number of people on Earth) “The commons is a new way to express a very old idea—that some forms of wealth belong to all of us, and that these community resources must be actively protected and managed for the good of all. The commons are the things that we inherit and create jointly, and that will (hopefully) last for generations to come. The commons consists of gifts of nature such as air, water, oceans and wildlife as well as shared social creations such as libraries, public spaces, scientific research and creative works”.

  • 17. ALASKA The secret to Alaska’s success lies in two basic principles: • Responsible fisheries management and sustainable fishing practices take care not to harm the fish, other marine plants and animals, nor the environment • And fish populations are never overfished.
  • 18. MacFARLAND SPRINGS LASSEN, CA MacFarland marks the movement of farming fish towards organic farming techniques, where chemicals are not used and the feed source is natural to the farmed product.  Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR*) around .25 to 1 – an environmental breakthrough. By comparison, a traditional farmed trout has a FCR in excess of 4 to 1.

  • 21. TREATY A treaty is an express agreement under international law entered into by actors in international law, namely sovereign states and international organizations. A treaty may also be known as an (international) agreement, protocol, covenant, convention or exchange of letters, among other terms.
