The simple creation of jobs based on quantity does little to help Santa Feans way of
life, their prosperity, or their long-term family security. We can line up Airport Road with
fast food restaurants all day long which will definitely create new jobs. However, it is
the quality of jobs that is of paramount importance. These are the jobs that “import”
dollars earned outside our localized market and thus gives Santa Fe a comparative
advantage.

It is true that there has been a major shakedown of jobs all across the country, now
dubbed the “Great Recession.” It was the dot-com bubble busting all over again but
on a global, macro-economic scale. What was good about the dot-com bust, however,
was that it weeded out the weak and non-performing—some deserved it, some didn’t.
Probably the most exciting company to not only survive, but come out dominant from
the dot-com crash, was Google. Having started out small as a company operated in
the garage of a friend and employing a staff of three, Google's meteoric rise to a top
name on the Internet would never occurred but for the City of Menlo Park and their
economic development incubator “the Foundry”, which proactively seeks and promotes
top
these critical budding industries within their own ranks.
When we analyze the core strengths and weaknesses of Santa Fe’s economy, it is
critical to look at jobs created and lost relative to the new American economy. The

Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
