The star of David
Hanukkah is the Jewish
festival of lights.

It is celebrated in
November or December
for 8 days.
Who celebrates Hanukkah?
People called Jews, celebrate
Hanukkah.

They believe that God created
everything.

They read stories from the old
Testament in a special book called
the Torah.
This Jewish family are celebrating Hanukkah in
December by lighting the menorah. They
remember when the Jews rebuilt their temple
 2000 years ago.
Each night of Hanukkah a candle is added to the
menorah until all eight candles are alight on the
last day.

It reminds Jewish people of the miracle of the lamp.....
What was the miracle of the lamp?
When the Syrians destroyed the Jewish temple,
2000 years ago in Jerusalem, the Jewish
 people were sad.
The Jews defeated the Syrians and
rebuilt their temple. They dedicated it
to God.
They wanted to light a lamp in the temple
but there was only enough oil to keep it
burning for 1 night.

It kept burning for 8 nights!
        What a miracle!
This menorah stands just outside the
White House in Washington, USA.
During Hanukkah Jewish children are
given chocolate coins called gelt.
During Hanukkah Jewish people eat Latkes.
They are potato cakes made from
grated potato , eggs, onion and flour.
Jewish children play with dreidel.
They are four–sided spinning tops.
