SMART BoardThe Interactive White BoardMaking it Easy to Succeed in the Classroom
What is a SMART Board? A SMART board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input (scrolling, mouse control) in the same way as a PC. A projector is used to display a computer’s video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts as a large touch screen. The SMART Board typically comes with 4 digital pens, which use digital ink and replace traditional whiteboard markers.
How do SMART boards work? The SMART Board interactive whiteboard operates as part of a system that includes the interactive whiteboard, a computer, a projector and white boarding software called SMART Notebook collaborative learning software. The components are connected wirelessly, via USB or serial cables. A projector connected to the computer displays the computer’s desktop image on the interactive whiteboard.   The interactive whiteboard accepts touch input from a finger, pen or other solid object.
What is DViT? All SMART boards use DViT (Digital Visual Touch) technology to detect and respond to touch interactions on the interactive whiteboard surface. This camera-based touch technology for interactive whiteboards and interactive displays uses digital cameras and proprietary software and firmware to detect finger or pen contact with the screen. That contact is then interpreted as finger or pen activity.
Software SMART software that is designed to work on the SMART Board includes: SMART Classroom Suite is a bundle of four SMART software titles – SMART Notebook software, SMART Notebook SE (Student Edition) software, SMART Sync and SMART Response CE software SMART Notebook SE software is the student version of SMART Notebook for students to take notes and organize digital information. The program runs on student desktops, laptops, ultra-mobile PCs, PDAs and tablets and is also available on a USB bracelet SMART Notebook Math Tools is an add-on to SMART Notebook software and includes virtual math tools, including a ruler, compass, and protractor SMART Sync classroom management software allows teachers to monitor what each student is doing on a student computer SMART Response interactive response system includes software and hardware components. Teachers create and push-out questions to students who answer yes/no, true/false, multiple choice and short answer questions from their wireless remote - or clicker
Software Cont’d SMART Response CE software allows students to answer SMART Response questions via their laptop or mobile device, rather than a remote/clicker SMART Ideas concept-mapping software is a multi-level concept mapping software SMART Bridgit conferencing software is a data conferencing software that connects multiple parties across distances and allows users to share their desktop/laptop or interactive whiteboard screen with all participants. SMART Meeting Pro software is a collaborative meeting software that connects two or more desktops/laptops or interactive whiteboards in the same meeting room, or across distances when using SMART Bridgit. Users write over soft copy documents using digital ink and pass the document to the next iwb or laptop LinQ Software allows a laptop to connect wirelessly to a SMART Board and broadcast their laptop/desktop screen on the interactive whiteboard
Classroom Use The use of SMART boards in the classroom are endless due to it’s interactive features. SMART boards are great for collaborative lesson plans, and allow all students to engage in the learning process. SMART Boards also can save each individual part of the lesson plan, allowing students and teacher to review the material at a later time.
Teaching with a SMART board
Ways SMART board can help Students in the classroom  Technological innovator Johndan Johnson-Eilola describes three ways SMART boards can benefit its user. They include: 1. The SMART Board allows users to work with large amounts of information 2. It offers an information space that invites active collaboration 3. The work produced is often “dynamic and contingent”
Interactive Lesson Plans for Teachers According to SMART board’s website, teachers can use SMART products to “transform teaching and learning” (http://smarttech.com/us). There are a variety of resources available on the internet dedicated to using SMART products. The website, http://exchange.smarttech.com/#tab, offers hundreds of lesson plans for various subjects and grade levels. The website, http://www.ismartboard.com/also offers lesson plans, games, and activities for educators.
