Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
• March 9, 1977
At the age of 18, Terry’s right leg was amputated above the knee
due to cancer.
• October 15, 1979
• Terry writes to the Canadian Cancer Society to support his run: "I'm
not a dreamer, and I'm not saying this will initiate any kind of
definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have
to."
• April 12, 1980
Terry began his Marathon of Hope in St John's, Newfoundland, and
ran an average of 42km/day (26 miles) through six provinces.
• September 1, 1980
After 143 days and 5,373km (3,339 miles) Terry stopped running
outside of Thunder Bay. Cancer had spread to his lungs.
7. February 1, 1981
In the five months after Terry
was forced to abandon his epic
crusade, his hope of raising
the equivalent of $1 for
every Canadian to fight cancer was
realized.
The national population was
24.1 million; the Terry Fox Marathon
Marathon of Hope fund totaled
$24.17 million.
8. June 28, 1981
One month short of his
twenty-third birthday, Terry Fox
died in New Westminster, BC.
As of the 2015 Terry Fox
foundation has:

• > 1,150 cancer projects
• > 9,000 Terry Fox runs across
the world
• > 2.27 million participants
