The one day surgery department started in January 2010 and initially had poor results, performing only two surgeries in the first month. However, the program progressed steadily over time and eventually exceeded the expected target of 40% of surgeries being performed as day surgeries. Data is presented on the number of total surgeries, emergency operations, and day surgeries performed each month. While performance varied month to month, on average the department achieved over 50% of surgeries as day surgeries, meeting the target set by the Ministry of Health. Continued awareness efforts among surgeons, anesthesiologists, the community and patients are recommended to maintain these standards.
