What is the purpose of a music 			video?,[object Object],	A music video is mainly used as a marketing device to sell the single and the image of the artist. It is also used to invoke a reaction within the audience so that the audience can visually relate to the single which in turn helps them to relate to the music lyrically and emotionally.,[object Object]
WHEN DID THEY BECOME POPULAR?,[object Object],	The first ever music video was created by George Thomas who created the “illustrated song”- a series of still images that were projected on a screen simultaneously accompanied with live performances.,[object Object],However, it wasn’t until the 1980s where they became really popular due to the creation of MTV and VH1 who based their whole format around music videos.  Before the early 1980s, music videos were referred to as “filmed inserts” and “promotional clips” or “film clips”. In 1981, the US version of MTV aired their first ever music video- “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles and thus created 24 hour music which is very much popular to this day. As technology advanced, music videos became more and more popular. Music stations such as MTV and VH1 had a central role in advertising singles and music videos and due to this advancement, the most successful music video ever made was released in 1983-  “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. The  reason why it was so successful was due to the fact that it moved away from inexpensive and simple video recordings to create a music video that challenged the norms of music videos- “Thriller” was the first of its kind to feature a supernatural element in it’s music video. The famous dance sequence, zombies and strange narrative helped catapult it into cinematic prominence; the production of “Thriller” cost around 500,000 US dollars. ,[object Object]
Who controlled the development of music videos in the past? Who now has control of the development of a music video? ,[object Object],In the past, music videos were largely controlled by director’s  and music labels as they were the ones who had to visually create the video in the first place. Their creative vision helped to shape the music video and the artist’s outcome therefore it was obligatory for the artist to follow the director’s lead if they wanted any success.  Famous directors such as Mark Romanek who directed Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” and Hype Williams  who directed “So Sick” by Ne-Yo all brought their own unique beauty and style to the videos they directed thus making themselves known in the music industry for their unique vision.,[object Object],	Goodwin’s theory states that record labels have certain demand’s that artists must live up to. For example it is a known fact that girl band’s  as well as boy band’s are largely controlled by their record labels because they have to have a certain image that appeals to their target audience. For example “The Saturdays” appeal to both males and females as females want to be like them and emulate their style and males are attracted to their sex appeal. Also, it is also common for girl bands to include a performance element in their music videos as it is expected of them. I think the level of control also depends on what type of genre the artist belongs to. Those who classify themselves as being “indie” are likely to have more control over their music as most bands are signed to independent labels that allow artists to have more control of their music because their music is not very mainstream therefore record label’s don’t see a need to change the band in anyway.  The “indie” genre is very much based on a “Do It Yourself” ethos and this can be seen when band members play their own instruments and input their own ideas into their lyrics. ,[object Object],Those who belong to the “pop” genre are largely controlled by their record labels as their songs, image and music videos are very mainstream therefore record labels have to control every aspect in order to keep the artists image relevant and in touch with current audiences.,[object Object]
Who controlled the development of music videos in the past? Who now has control of the development of a music video? ,[object Object],	However, in recent years more and more artists taking control of their music videos and are creating their own narratives and concepts to be included in their music video. For example the band I researched, “The National” directed their own music video rather than getting someone else to do it as they wanted their own vision and own style to stand out in the music video.,[object Object],Over recent years, many artists have campaigned for rights to control their own music and many have joined the pressure group “The Featured Artists Coalition” who campaign for artists to have more control over their work. Indie bands such as the Kaiser Chief’s have signed on to this group along with other artists such as Robbie Williams, Kate Nash, the Klaxons and Radiohead. By joining causes such as the one mentioned above, it is clear that artists now have more control that before as they are willing to speak out and have their ideas heard.,[object Object]
How have new technologies impacted on the relevance and importance of music videos? ,[object Object],	Inexpensive recording equipment and portable video cameras were the height of new technologies in the 1980s however recently new technologies such as YouTube, IPods and ITunes have increased the relevance and importance of music videos. ,[object Object],The recent creation of ITunes and IPods have allowed audiences to download their favourite music videos into their computers and IPods so that they can view them anytime, anywhere. The increasing availability and popularity of music videos has meant that record labels and artists are now pushing the boundaries in the art of video making because they see that audiences are now willing to pay for music videos to be on their computers etc. Artists such as Lady Gaga have challenged the normal boundaries of music videos by creating music videos that are seen as being short cinematic pieces that entice and captivate audiences and leave them wanting more. In the history of YouTube, Lady Gaga’s music video “Bad Romance” has pulled in 284,271,032 views,[object Object],	By the beginning of decade, MTV dropped their music shows in order to air reality programmes such as “The Hills”. Their change in format saw the release of YouTube in 2005; YouTube allowed audiences to save, replay and upload their own videos. The constant availability of music videos from the audience’s favourite artists increased the importance of music videos due to audiences constantly watching music videos online and demanding more from recording artists. ,[object Object]
