Collective ID easter follow up
1. Collective Identity: tracing black stereotypes over time.
Easter homework recap:
Research the following stereotypes and representations:
- "Coon"
- "Blackface", or minstrelsy as it is also known
- "Hottentot Venus"
Answer the following questions in a PowerPoint. Address each area separately and in
detail.
- What are the origins of this representation?
- How were these representations used to reinforce white supremacist hegemony and
maintain the status quo after the Emancipation of slaves?
- are these representations of black Americans still visible in contemporary American
media?
TASK:
1. Moving around the room, find as much information as you can about these
representations (minimum of 5 pieces of information). 10 minutes.
2. Plan and write (with a partner if you aren't confident) an answer to the question "how
were these representations used as a means of reinforcing white supremacist
hegemony and maintaining status quo after the Emancipation of slaves?" One page,
address each stereotype separately and in detail. 40 minutes= 10 minutes planning 30
minutes writing. If working in a pair you can consult each other but you must write your
own answer.
3. Noam Chomsky- the propaganda model. Take notes and fill in the Chomsky section of
your Collective ID theory table. Apply to your modern examples of coons, blackface
performance and the Hottentot Venus. How are these black artists and celebrities
persuaded to conform to these stereotypes?
2. TASK 1
Fill each box with information from your classmates about the Coon, Blackface and
Hottentot Venus stereotypes. Useful info includes but is not limited to: Origins, date
stereotypes first appeared in mainstream media, early performers, defining characteristics
of each stereotype.
Also look for any information that can help you answer the short essay question for task 2.
