What is the next big technology disruptor that could impact your marketing and communications world? Well, no one knows for sure. But, one thing that’s certain is technology is advancing at a rapid pace. It’s hard to keep up with current trends let alone keep an eye on the future. Join, Andy Petroski, Director and Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies to explore new(er) technologies that have the potential to disrupt marketing, communications, learning and business in general. Andy will introduce QR codes, augmented reality, robotic telepresence, alternate input devices, and flexible displays; provide demonstrations (some hands-on) and explore each technology’s current and potential impact.

Purpose for this session Impact other technologies have had on communication Prepare for the next disruptive wave Many of the technologies disrupting your world now, primarily social networking, are on the plateau of productivity. Just three years ago those technologies were on the slope of enlightenment. So, one thing that looking at emerging technologies allows us to do is to see what’s coming up and begin to explore it and understand it before our audience expects it. A few technologies we’ll talk about tonight are: (Can you find these on the hype cycle?) QR Codes Augmented Reality 3D Printing Mobile Robots Gesture recognition Computer-brain interface As you consider these technologies it’s important to consider them in the broad sense of the communication profession. Not all of these technologies are going to have an impact on your next publication or event, but they may have a powerful impact on a more focused element of your work.
Polleverwhere Poll: Which of these technologies do you already use as a communication professional?
Poll Everywhere Poll: Which technology are you most interested in learning about?
Kaywa http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ The piece of paper on everyone’s table is a QR code. You can download a QR reader and scan it for access to my bio on the HU web site. QR stands for quick response. It’s a way for embedding information into a scannable code that can be put on electronic media, print media and t-shirts. You need a QR code creator to generate the QR code. Show them how I created this QR code. Step-by-step. Would anyone like to create a QR code? Media browser icon: http://dooblou.blogspot.com/2011/11/managing-your-media-with-wifi-file.html
Most people use a QR code to link to a web site. QR code reading is not ubiquitous. Different scanners = different results. There is a lot more info you can include in a QR code than what we went over here.
