Subculture Subculture- is a group of people with a culture (whether distinct or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong.	Ex) preps, gothic, jocks, etc.
My Subculture The strange and undefined: Usually not committed to any group of people, doesn’t assign to any particular trend/outfit. Changes taste in oneself. Prefers changing appearance after ‘major’ event. Likes to stand out or blend in from a crowd. Often mistaken for labels of ‘Goth’, ‘Emo’, ‘Punk’ and more.
Ethnocentrism When I went to Blake H.S: . the people who were also into trying different trends and explored different styles thought they were ‘different’ and ‘better’ then all the other ‘cliques’. They usually hang with people who skated and wore black skinny jeans, band t-shirts and ‘VANZ’.
Culture Shock When I transferred to PBHS: I saw people hanging with everyone, there were cliques but only in the Cafeteria, not much anywhere else. You only saw a few who wore black anything and chains but everyone colored their hair bright colors not just one group. Most of the people wore colorful clothing- shoes, jeans, and not one group would wear a certain brand, everyone wore most-all brands.
Material Culture(Clothing, possessions, diet) Wear different styles of clothing from different subcultures. (i.e. baggy shirts/pants, tight jeans, plaid skirt, petite sweaters, net/striped stockings, dresses etc.) Apply make up in different ways. Many shoes (combat boot, pumps, sandals, sneakers, etc.) Sometimes goes vegan. Recyclable products into purses, bags, etc.
Material Culture(Norms) Extremely colorful make up artist Fashion Interest Wannabe trend-starter Materialistic Expensive shopper Trying new things Owning a large amount of shoes Able to dress ‘slum’
Material Culture(Folkways) Always running late to an event Changes clothes multiple times Arrogant and/or selfish Obesophobic, Bacteriophobic, Autophobic Very Openly blunt about his/her sexuality Often attracted to same sex Creative mind Procrastinating
Material Culture(sanctions) Thinks authority is annoying Other females are inferior compared to themselves Men are like puppies, easy to brainwash when ‘whipped’ Every person for themselves Peers are immature Live by the motto: “boys are toys, most girls are hoes, some are your ‘whores’”
Material Culture(Taboos) Betraying a friend/family Choosing boys before friends Having old worn out clothing Going through a year without ‘making a fashion statement’ Over-eating Tolerating ‘run-ons’ from whiney singles Being unhygienic
Non-Material Culture(Language/Slang) ‘Whores’- Friends (+) ‘Bish’- B!t@h (+) “HarHar”- Laughing (+) ‘Thug-star’- Wannabe thugs (+) ‘Oler Babe/Baby’-Friendly greeting(+) ‘Run-on’- Complaints (-) “ew”- response to a dirty pun “Hey Stranger”- Flirty greeting
Non-Material Culture(Gestures/Expressions) Hand waving under chin-Hello Peace sign- hello Thumbs up- yes Weird lip gestures- acknowledging person’s presence. Pinky cross with thumbs touching- swear/promise Rolling the tongue- “that’s hot”
Non-Material Culture(Behavior/Practices/Special events) Applying make up Dressing up Halloween Costume Party Going out late night Rebelling against authority Drawing/Doodling on objects Cosplay Conventions
Non-Material Culture(Values) Various Clothes Many Shoes Accessories Individual expression Make up Colors Money Family and Friends
Outlook/Beliefs Believer of ‘God’ not religion Everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves Things get worst before any better When one door closes and different one opens One can make many differences Options should be taken for granted Regrets are reminders of what should be done differently when given the opportunity
