16. There are many traditions. We
can say about “first birthday of
a child”.
On the first anniversary of a child, in a tradition that still
survives today, the Maltese organize a game known as il-
quċċija, where a variety of symbolic objects are randomly
placed around the seated child. These may include a boiled
egg, a Bible, crucifix or rosary, a book, and so on.
Whichever object the child shows most interest in is said to
reveal the child's path and fortunes in adulthood.
