– Renaissance is a French term
which means “rebirth” or “revival”
– In European history, it is roughly a 200
year period from 1350 and 1550
– The Renaissance marked a
rediscovery of ancient Greek and
Roman ideas, art, culture and
philosophy

 Many people responded to
the crises of the seventeenth
century by searching for
order – will turn to absolutism
 In dealing with the
political, religious, economic,
and climatic problems of the
day the leaders of state
sought more power to deal
with problems.


9. The Industrial Revolution,
1700–1900
The Industrial Revolution
begins in Britain, spreads to
other countries, and has a
strong impact on economics,
politics, and society.
Rail locomotives began connecting
U.S. cities in the 1840s, enabling
transport of goods between factories,
cities, and ports.

11. World War I
World War I (WWI) was a military conflict, from
1914 to 1918
Began as a local European war between AustriaHungary and Serbia on July 28, 1914
Transformed into a general European struggle by
declaration of war against Russia on August 1, 1914
Eventually became a global war involving 32 nations

13. World War II
 In terms of lives lost and material
destruction, was the most devastating war in
human history.
Began in 1939 as a European conflict
between Germany and a England/France
Widened to include most of the nations of the
world.
Ended in 1945, with the U.S. and Soviet
Union emerging as major world powers
