2. Proposal 1
Research Topic : The addiction of media technology
Background :
Addiction is fact that people convict themselves with their own
hand.Researchers found nearly four in five students had significant mental
and physical distress, panic, confusion and extreme isolation when forced to
unplug from technology for an entire day.
They found college students at campuses across the globe admitted being
“addicted” to modern technology such as Smart phones, laptops and
television as well as social networking such as Facebook and
Twitter.(H.Andrew,2011)
Problem Identification :
• students/young adults admit to cravings, anxiety attacks and depression
when forced to abstain from using media
• unable to voluntarily avoid their gadgets for one full day
• Technology had changed the human behavior
3. Aim & Objective
• To express the addiction of human towards modern technology
• To study about why human addicted to media technology
Motivation
: Use technology as it is intended, which is to make life easier and to have
fun. But then, need to know the limitation and how to control it.
Ideation & Concept
: Modern-techno addict
Design Approach
: Sculpture + Installation Art

Case Studies
What is Technology ?
Technology is the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools,
machines, techniques, crafts, systems, methods of organization, in order to
solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal
or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools,
machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies
significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control
and adapt to their natural environments.( Wikipedia)
6. The example of modern technology
We are surrounds by different modern technologies, like medical
technology, information technology and construction technology,
robot technology etc.The image above shows some example of
technology that exists nowadays. The main unit of modern
technology is information technology i.e. computer internet and all
electronic devices controlled by machines.
Computer is the greatest invention and product of this life but
internet is the father of the computer. These two things are essential
parts of each other and dull with out any of them. Computer, the
machine, is with all the information and skills said to be the
equivalent to human mind made us much relax and internet has all
the solutions of major and minor problems of this modern
technologies life.
7. These technologies have numerous benefits. The
most important is that it has secured the world in a
screen or page or an electronic media (electronic chip
which can save and control a huge amount of
information in any form of data). The modern
technology has changed our minds totally. We are
able to stand for good or bad and can differentiate
them. We are in better condition from our’ s
ancestors. They were afraid of every mysterious
moment of the nature and any sudden incident of
their life. Hence technologies have made our life
easier and happier.
8. What is Addiction ?
People with an addiction do not have control over what they are doing, taking or using. Their addiction
may reach a point at which it is harmful. Addictions do not only include physical things we consume,
such as drugs or alcohol, but may include virtually anything, such abstract things as gambling to
seemingly harmless products and may refer to substance dependence (e.g. drug addiction) or
behavioral addiction (e.g. gambling addiction).Nowadays, the phenomenon of the media & technology
addiction is widely expand in our world.
What is Media & Technology addiction?
Addiction has long been understood to mean an uncontrollable habit. Addicted to technology are
usually happened to the new generations. Many study has been made to prove the problems existed
towards human addiction to technology.
"World Unplugged" is one of the study that research on going 24 hours without media. This new study
asked close to 1,000 students in ten countries on five continents from Chile to China, Lebanon to the
USA, Uganda to the United Kingdom to abstain from using all media for a full day. After their 24 hours
of abstinence, the students were then asked to report their successes and admit to any failures. This is
a global study and it prove that many country also agree and feel the addiction phenomena towards
modern technology.

9. The usual thing that can be seen in these days :
-24/7 in front of pc
• check email
• games
• movie
• music
• twitter
• Facebook
• Online banking
• bills
• study, assignments
• Delivery service
10. -This is called an internet addiction: web surfer (Fb, twitter), cyber sexual, chat rooms /online
dating/social networking, gaming & online gambling, ebay , shopping
-24/7 with Smartphone
• calling
• Viber
• Whatsapp
• Texting
• video calls
• games
What makes internet use addictive?
1. Accessible 24/7
2. It can be anonymous
3. It feel secure
4. Easy to use
5. Provide illusion of connection
6. Fun & engaging
11. The rise of digital communication in the late 20th century has made it possible for media
organizations (or individuals) to deliver text, audio, and video material over the same wired,
wireless, or fiber-optic connections. At the same time, it inspired some media organizations to
explore multimedia delivery of information. This digital convergence of news media, in
particular, was called "Mediamorphosis" by researcher Roger Fidler, in his 1997 book by that
name. Today, we are surrounded by a multi-level convergent media world where all modes of
communication and information are continually reforming to adapt to the enduring demands of
technologies, "changing the way we create, consume, learn and interact with each
other".(Wikipedia)
Observation
From my observation, people in Malaysia also struck in the "addiction" phenomenon. They
usually used their smartphone or gadgets during waiting and queuing or when they are getting
bored.
Email, PDAs, iPhones, laptops, and Smartphones dominate our modern world. Our uber-
connected lives have made us virtually available at any time, at any place.
Technology Influence Culture
Both technology and culture continue to influence each other as they develop and change over
time. In the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, technology and culture have significantly
influenced one another. As cultures change so does the technology they develop. With
developments in manufacturing, communications and engineering, cultures have been re-
shaped around the world by freeing people from small family farms by choice or by force,
dispersing information and changing the landscape. (B.Alyssa )
12. Many teens tell survey they’re addicted to social media, texting
Brandon Hubacher of Fairfax Station uses his cellphone to text message friends while on vacation in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Some kids
cannot quit their personal technology, texting and Facebook, even on vacation, as network connections have no boundaries. (Chuck
Snyder - SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST/C)Nine out of 10 teens text and use social media sites — a good chunk of them daily —
but they still prefer communicating face to face, according to a survey.
Many U.S. teens say they are addicted to social media and texting and often want to unplug. But they feel positive overall about how
social media sites such as Facebook and text messaging have helped them connect with friends and family.
The mixed feelings that teens have about digital communication sheds new light on a population growing up immersed in online
technology. Research is scant on the behavioral and developmental effects of technology on youth.
A national survey of more than 1,000 people between the ages of 13 and 17 by the child advocacy group Common Sense Media shows
how pervasive mobile communications has become for that age group.
“Today’s 13- to 17-year-olds are the first generation to go through their entire teen years with such an array of digital devices and
platforms,” said Common Sense Media CEO James Steyer. “This report reads like a primer for parents to teens and tweens — to help them
understand how their kids are engaging with technology and to highlight any impact it might be having on their social and emotional
well being.”
Text messaging is still the favored application of teens for communicating.
Two-thirds of respondents said they text every day and half said they visit social networking sites daily. One-quarter of teens use at least
two different types of social media a day.
Facebook, which is considering lowering its age minimum, dominates teens, with seven out of 10 people surveyed saying they have an
account compared to 6 percent for Twitter and 1 percent for GooglePlus and MySpace.
In the report called “Social Media, Social Life: How Teens View Their Digital Lives,” Common Sense Media found that their adolescent
respondents felt social media was beneficial.
Half of teens said they feel social networks have helped their friendships, while only 4 percent said the platforms have hurt relationships.
Three out of 10 teens said social networks made them feel more outgoing, compared to 5 percent who said they felt more introverted.
Still, half of all respondents said real-life communication is the most fun and fruitful for their relationships. Only 4 percent prefer to talk
on the phone.
13. The context that exist in my research are the historical context , geographical
context and social context.
Historical context
will refer the past/old media and technology or past skills
People in the past is really hard working (no machines, no delivery services)
Geographical context
the changes of natural environment in modern world
everything has been modernize
Social context
the way of society socializing nowadays
see their social activities influenced by technology
interaction between machine - human , gadgets - human
shut down socially
14. Criticality
Based on my analysis of my research topic, I have some
questions that might help me to gather some more information
to go through along my research :
Why people are addicted to the technology?
Does people apply the real efforts and hard work ethics in their
life?
Does the technology change the lifestyle of people in present?
How if technology fails? How to approach them to the traditional
skills/media?
19. The advancement of technology has brought a new life to human.
Today, we are surrounded by a multi-level convergent media world where all
modes of communication and information are continually reforming to adapt to
the enduring demands of technologies. Technology enhancement in social media
has reformed and changed the human culture and behavior over the world. More
and more people are become addicted to the media due to the uncontrollable
activity on social and online networking. The installation sculpture is all about the
relationship between the individual and technology. It also shows the behavior in
which mass media generates addiction to human life.
This project is an installation sculpture project. The concept is a Modern Techno
Addict which shows the life of simulation or manipulation human on technology.
The combination of installation art and sculpture is made to give more feeling and
portray the realism of addiction on media. The bunch of networking sites icon will
be placed on the top of the cable human to represent the sites that are usually
visited. The cable human sculpture is the indication of connectivity between
technology and human. The connection is one of the main parts that merge
human and technology and a factor to bring them towards addiction. As the
connectivity important, some interaction between human and technology will take
place.
