Students will analyze literacystages and plan appropriate materials and activities to apply this contentknowledge.  Field experience required (6-10 contact hours).<br />Course Purpose<br />In taking this course you will become competent in all elements of early childhood education.        The aim of this course is to provide you with a foundation to inspire children                                           to write, speak, and listen for lifetime learning.<br />Learning Outcomes<br />The primary objective of the course is to explore the subject matter, becomefamiliar with the vocabulary, concepts and developmentally appropriate application                models for the field.  Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:<br />,[object Object]
Design developmentally appropriate practices for early literacy learning.
Compare and contrast early literacy theories in order to evaluate bestpractices for the classroom.
Demonstrate knowledge of major components of early literacy andinstructional approaches that apply to early literacy.
Conduct assessment consistent with the perspectives of early literacyto inform field work and future teaching.
Describe and implement strategies used in early childhood educationto promote intrinsic motivation toward reading, writing, speaking, andlistening for lifelong learning.
Demonstrate knowledge of early literacy development as it relates todiversity in the early childhood education classroom—particularly culturaland linguistic differences as well as students with special needs.
Exhibit an understanding of how early literacy is relevant to theirpersonal, social, and historical awareness as future educators.Calendar of Activities<br />The Calendar of Activities is a summary of the Weekly Lessons and Assignmentswithin our course.  Our due dates for each weekly assignment can be foundwithin each weekly section inside our Online Course. You will be notified of any changes to the course syllabus via a Blackboard                              announcement and a reminder in our Weekly Open Forum Discussions.<br />,[object Object],Your Course Participation<br />Description of Assignments<br />Each week, you will have individual and/or group activities that must be completed.  You will receive points toward your grade based on your participation in theactivities and the quality of your individual or group’s work.  Complete instructionsand rubrics for each assignment can be found in each Weekly Assignment link.<br />Discussion Board Forums<br />Our discussion board forums represent an opportunity to have thoughtful discussionsabout a given topic.  The questions raised will be general in nature and ask youto think deeply.  <br />In each discussion topic, you will be required to give a thoughtful and comprehensive             response of at least five to eight sentences that are reflective and well-written.The discussion begins when other class members read what you wrote and respond.<br />Class members are expected to contribute original thoughts as well as respondto at least two other people.  In your responses, you will ask your classmates aquestion, expand on one of their ideas, ask for clarity on one of their points, politely disagree and explain why.<br />Please note that you should complete all of the readings for the week priorto submitting your discussion board forum response. <br />Note:  You will be expected to post to the forums in correct sentence and paragraph format. Tests and Quizzes<br />This course will have the three tests as outlined in the Calendar of Activities. <br />Written Assignments<br />Written assignments are important in this course.  The ability to communicateclearly and effectively to a variety of people is critical to success in the workplace.Your assignments will be evaluated from this perspective.  Proofread all assignments carefully.       Errors in spelling, punctuation, syntax and grammar will result in point deductions.<br />Team Project Requirements (if applicable)<br />This course may include a team project. Recommendations for Success in this Course<br />,[object Object],For a 3 credit hour course, you will need a minimum of 12 hours (4 X 3) ofself-study time each week. If you fail to sufficiently progress in the online course priorto the official withdrawal date, you will be withdrawn for non-attendance.  Other Grade Indicators – FN Grade, “I” Grades, and Repeating the Course<br />FN Grade – Failure for Non-Attendance<br />A Failure for Non-Attendance (FN) grade may be assigned any time after the final withdrawal date.  Please refer to the College catalog for additional information.<br />Incomplete – “I” Grades<br />Incomplete (I) grades may be awarded based on the criteria in the College catalog.<br />Repeating the Course<br />You may repeat a course in an attempt to improve a grade previously earned.However, you are limited in your attempts to courses where a “D,” “F,” or “FN”grade was earned.  You have only three total attempts in any course, includingthe original grade, repeat grades, and withdrawals.  Upon the third attempt ina course, you must be given an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F”.<br />When you repeat a course at Florida State College, only the last grade earnedis calculated in your cumulative grade point average (GPA).   • 3. Compare and contrast early literacy theories in order to evaluate bestpractices for the classroom.
  • 4. Demonstrate knowledge of major components of early literacy andinstructional approaches that apply to early literacy.
  • 5. Conduct assessment consistent with the perspectives of early literacyto inform field work and future teaching.
  • 6. Describe and implement strategies used in early childhood educationto promote intrinsic motivation toward reading, writing, speaking, andlistening for lifelong learning.
  • 7. Demonstrate knowledge of early literacy development as it relates todiversity in the early childhood education classroom—particularly culturaland linguistic differences as well as students with special needs.
