Marwa Ali El-Sherbini (1977-2009) Edad - 31 años País - Egipto Age – 31 years old Country – Egypt
Marwa era una joven mujer musulmana licenciada en farmacéutica de nacionalidad Egipcia , que residìa en Alemania y fue asesinada durante la celebración de un juicio por injurias en la ciudad de Dresden. Marwa was a young Muslim woman licenced in pharmacy of egyptian nationality, who resided in Germany and was killed during the celebration of a lawsuit for insults in the city of Dresden. Marwa El-Sherbini se encontraba en un tribunal de esta ciudad, acompañada por miembros de su familia, para asistir a un juicio contra su agresor, que varios meses antes la había insultado gravemente llamándola, entre otras cosas, «terrorista» por llevar el velo islámico  (hiyab) . Marwa El-Sherbini was in a courtroom of this city, accompanied by members of her family to assist with the trial agasint her agresor, who several months before had severely insulted her, calling her, among other things, a terrorist for wearing the Islamic veil (hijab). ¿Quién fue? Who was she? Marwa El-Sherbini nació el 7 de octubre de 1977 en el seno de una familia de clase media de Alejandría. Sus padres Ali El-Sherbini y Laila Shams son químicos de profesión. En 1995 finalizó sus estudios de secundaria en el English Girls College (EGC) de Alejandría. Marwa El-Sherbini was born on October 7th, 1977 in the seno of a middle-class family in Alexandria.  Her parents Ali El-Sherbini and Laila Shams are quimicos by profession.  In 1995 she finished her high school studies in the English Girls College (EGC) of Alexandria. Entre 1992 y 1999 fue miembro de la selección egipcia de balonmano. Between 1992 and 1999 she was a member of the Egyptian team of handball. En 2000 obtuvo la Licenciatura en Farmacia. In 2000 she received her licence in Pharmacy. En 2005 se trasladó a Alemania junto a su marido Elwi Okaz, biólogo genetista y profesor en la Univeridad egipcia de Minufiya. Primero residieron en Bremen, y desde 2008 lo hacían en Dresde, donde Elwi realizaba su doctorado en el Instituto Max Planck de Biología Celular, Molecular y Genética., mientras que Marwa trabajaba en el Hospital Universitario de Dresden. In 2005 she moved to Germany along with her husband Elwi Okaz, a genetic biologist and egyptian professor from Minufiya.  First they resided in Bremen and since 2008 they resided in Dresden, where Elwi worked on his doctorate in the Max Planck Institute of Celular, Molecular and Genetic Biology, while Marwa worked at the University Hospital of Dresden.
Tenían un hijo llamado Mustafa, nacido en el 2006. En el momento de su asesinato Marwa estaba embarazada de tres meses.  They had one son named Mustafa, born in 2006.  At the moment of Marwa’s murder she was pregnant of three months.
¿Cuando y de qué murió? When and how she died? Fue asesinada el 1º de Julio de 2009, durante la celebración de un juicio por injurias contra el ciudadano alemán, de 28 años Axel W. She was murdered on July 1st, 2009 during the celebration of a trial for insults against a german citizen, of 28 years of age Axel W. En agosto de 2008 se encontraba en un parque con su hijo, cuando un joven alemán la empezó a insultar diciéndole cosas como "islamista", "terrorista"  y "perra". Ella inició la correspondiente denuncia y al año siguiente se presentaron ante la corte el 1ª de Julio, donde el fiscal del caso pidió la pena más alta para el acusado Axel W., por delito de injurias con el agravante de xenofobia .  On August of 2008 she was at a park with her son when the young german began to insult her saying things like “islamist”, “terrorist” and “bitch”.  She began the corresponding charge and the following year she presented herself before the courtroom on July 1st, where the prosecutors of the case asked for the highest punishment for accused Axel W., for the crime of insults with aggravating xenofobia.  Antes de que el juez dictase la sentencia, Axel W. le dijo a Marwa: «No mereces vivir». Inmediatamente después de pronunciarse el veredicto, atacó a la mujer con un cuchillo ante la mirada atónita de los presentes. Marwa El-Sherbini recibió 18 puñaladas, muriendo casi en el acto.  Su marido Elwi Okaz ,  se interpuso al tratar de defenderla, pero resultó herido de gravedad  no sólo por las cuchilladas del agresor, sino que en medio de la confusión reinante, recibió un balazo por parte de oficiales de la corte. Estuvo en coma por 2 días.  Before the judge could dictate a sentance, Axel W. told Marwa: “You don’t derserve to live”.  Inmediately after the veredict was pronounced, he attacked the woman with a knife before the atónita eyes of those who were present.  Marwa El-Sherbini received 18 stabs, dying almost during the act. Her husband Elwi Okaz,  intervened to try to defend her, but was seriously injured not only by the knife of the attacker, but amid the confusion, was shot by officers of the court. He was in a coma for two days.
Este suceso causó una gran conmoción e indignación en todo el mundo, se realizaron fuertes protestas contra este horrible acto de islamofobia. Marwa ha sido bautizada como "Shahida al hiyab", que significa "la mártir del hiyab", pues murió por llevar esta prenda. Antes de ser repatriado el cadáver a su país, alrededor de 2.000 musulmanes residentes en Alemania le rindieron un último homenaje en la mezquita berlinesa de Dar al Salam. This event caused a great commotion and indignation around the world, there were strong protests against this horrible act of islamophobia.  Marwa has been named as the “Shahida al hiyab”, which means “the martyr of the hiyab”, because she died because of wearing this.  Before the cadaver was sent to her country, approximately 2,000 muslim residents in Germany made a tribute to her in the Berlin Mosque of Dar al Salam. Su cuerpo fue envuelto en una tela negra grabada con versos coránicos. Her body was wrapped in a black cloth with Koranic verses engraved.  When the coffin was removed upon shoulders from the mosque, the assistants yelled, “Allahu Akbar!”  (God is great) until it was placed in a car and taken to the airport.
El funeral se celebró el 6 de julio en Alejandría, y a él acudieron miles de personas, incluyendo autoridades egipcias y diplomáticos alemanes. La embajada alemana en Egipto condenó lo ocurrido y subrayó que no se trataba de un acto de persecución contra los musulmanes. The funeral was realized on July 6th in Alexandria and there thousands of people, including egyptian authorities and german diplomates gathered.  The german embassy in Egypt condemned this event and highlighted that it was not about an act of persecution of muslims.   Sin embargo muchos musulmanes están indignados ante el creciente racismo en Alemania y en Europa en general. Sulaiman Wilms, jefe de comunicación de la Unión Musulmana Europea, afirmó que este suceso era un ejemplo, al menos parcialmente representativo, de la situación a la que se enfrentan los musulmanes residentes en Europa. Laila Shams, la madre de Marwa, ha contado a la prensa como su hija tuvo muchas dificultades para encontrar trabajo debido a su religión.  However, many muslims were infuriated before the growing racism in Germany and Europe as a whole.  Sulaiman Wilms, chief of communications of the Muslim European Union, declared that this event was an example, at least partially representative, of the situtation that Muslim residents in Europe of facing.  Laila Shams, Marwa’s mother, has told the press that her daughter had many difficulties in finding an employment due to her religion.
El ataque y la lenta reacción de los medios de comunicación y de la clase política alemana, provocó acusaciones por el manejo negligente de los crímenes de odio contra los musulmanes. El gobierno egipcio demandó en todo momento la pena máxima por Alex W., que es la cárcel de por vida bajo la legislación alemana. El 11 de noviembre de 2009 el acusado fue condenado a cadena perpetua.   The atack and slow reaction of the means of communication and the type of german politics provoked accusations because of the negligent management of the hate crimes against muslims.  The Egyptian government demanded at all times the highest sentance for Alex W., who is in jail for under german legislation.  Novermber 11th, 2009 the defendent was condemned to life sentence. El procesado ruso-alemán Alex W. entra esposado al juicio   The russian-german defendant Alex W, enters the trial wearing hand-cuffs.
Marwa es un ícono para los oprimidos, es un modelo para todos los musulmanes y especialmente para las mujeres que luchan por mantener sus convicciones religiosas y son discriminadas.  Marwa is an icon for the oppressed, she is a model for all muslims and especially for women who struggle to maintain her religious convictions and are discriminated. Su muerte fue un hecho trágico que debió haber estado en todos los titulares de los diarios del mundo, pero fue minimizado por los medios especialmente europeos, al darle escasa difusión. Her death was a tragic event that should have been in all of the headlines of the news around the world but was minimized by the means of communications especially those in europe, giving it poor diffusion. Ante este claro hecho de Islamofobia, es lamentable como el gobierno Alemán no reaccionó tomando las medidas correspondientes para asegurar los derechos legítimos de sus ciudadanos, ni se hizo responsable por el acto. Before this obvious act of Islamophobia, it is unfortunate how the German government did not react taking the corresponding measures in ensuring the legitimate rights of its citizens, nor was it held responsable for the act. Existen ya varias propuestas para declarar el día 1º de Julio como el  “Día Mundial del Hijab” There now exists various proposals in order to declare July 1st the “International Day of the Hiyab”

However, many muslims were infuriated before the growing racism in Germany and Europe as a whole. Sulaiman Wilms, chief of communications of the Muslim European Union, declared that this event was an example, at least partially representative, of the situtation that Muslim residents in Europe of facing. Laila Shams, Marwa’s mother, has told the press that her daughter had many difficulties in finding an employment due to her religion.

Su muerte fue un hecho trágico que debió haber estado en todos los titulares de los diarios del mundo, pero fue minimizado por los medios especialmente europeos, al darle escasa difusión. Her death was a tragic event that should have been in all of the headlines of the news around the world but was minimized by the means of communications especially those in europe, giving it poor diffusion. Ante este claro hecho de Islamofobia, es lamentable como el gobierno Alemán no reaccionó tomando las medidas correspondientes para asegurar los derechos legítimos de sus ciudadanos, ni se hizo responsable por el acto. Before this obvious act of Islamophobia, it is unfortunate how the German government did not react taking the corresponding measures in ensuring the legitimate rights of its citizens, nor was it held responsable for the act.
