What kind of institution might distribute your media
1. What kind of institution
might distribute your
media product and why?
AMELIA PICKERING
MEDIA EVALUATION
2. When researching my chosen genre of psychological
thriller, there was a variety od distribution companies
involved with that particular genre…
3. Why Universal?
I chose Universal as my distributer because I found that its films were more
associated with the serial killer element that I included in my own opening
sequence.
The company has created majorly successful horror and thriller movies (Safe
House, The Bourne Legacy, Savages, The Purge).
I feel however that the majority of Universal films have had sci-fi elements, and
because The Purge (which was a thriller and had dystopian elements) did so well, I
feel there is a gap in the market for my psychological thriller.
Universal’s ideology is also bringing there productions to life, using a variety of
different subsidiary companies in the development, production and distribution
process.
They have been very successful in 2014 looking at the top 100 films, as they made
861 million dollars.
4. Universal Thriller Movies – box office
Safe House $126,181,630
The Bourne Legacy $113,203,870
Savages $47,323,100
The Purge $91,000,513
It is clear that universal have crated very
successful thriller movies looking at the box
office earnings and therefore would be an
ideal distributer for my own sequence.
5. Why New Line Cinema?
As well as Universal I chose New Line Cinema as it continues its long and
successful history of producing critically acclaimed hit films that resonate with
both mainstream and niche audiences around the world.
New Line Cinema was also the distributer of Se7en, which was a huge
inspiration when filming and editing my own opening sequence for Any Last
Words?
New Line produced the Oscar Award-winning The Lord of the Rings film trilogy,
which generated a combined worldwide box office of almost $3 billion (and
an additional $3 billion in consumer products and home entertainment
revenue). This was followed by a trilogy of films based on The Hobbit, which is
currently closing in on the $3 billion mark in global receipts – clearly a very
successful company.
New Line became a unit of Warner Bros. Entertainment in March 2008. The
company maintains separate development, production, marketing, distribution
and business affairs operations, but coordinates those functions with Warner
Bros. to maximize film performance and operating efficiencies.
6. Synergy
In using both Universal and New Line Cinema as a synergy I would
potentially be raising the profit of my film. This is because I would
double my marketing making more people spend money to come
and see it. Universal have done this in the past to help boost profit.
7. Logos
I used the logos for both Universal
and New Line Cinema to let the
audience know what companies
would be involved with my opening
sequence.
Due to the well known companies, I
decided to use their logos instead of
my own, due to the amount of
people who would instantly
recognise the iconic logos.
8. Production and Distribution
Universal will often produce and distribute their films, but they
can also hand over the distribution rights to smaller subsidiary
companies (e.g. working title) from different parts of the
world in order to reach the full potential of global
marketisation., majorly increasing profits and revenue.
New Line Cinema is similar to this, again boosting profits,
gaining the highest possible.
9. Exhibition
There are two categories when it comes to cinema – national chains and
independent exhibitors. It alwasys depends on the target audience of a movie
to determin which specific programming to use. Large chains often fill their
multiplexes with blockbusters and individual independents.
Both Universal and New Line Cinema exhibit their films in national chains to
increase admissions and reach as many of their target audience as possible,
both distributing blockbusters.
