SEXUALITY
A TRAINING FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH A DISABILITY
WE ARE ALL SEXUAL
OUR CHOICE
• We all have the right to choose how to express our sexuality
• All people deserve to be treated with respect and
compassion
• Everyone deserves to be provided with reliable and
accurate information about their bodies, health, and
sexuality
• Relationships should be consensual
• Consent is when everyone involved agrees with what is
happening
ABUSE
• Physical or mental abuse or violence of any kind are NEVER
acceptable in any relationship
• It is best to stop an uncomfortable situation before it gets
worse
• You need to be assertive when something feels wrong
• Practice saying, “that makes me feel uncomfortable”
• Practice saying “No, Stop!”
WHAT DOES THIS PICTURE MEAN?
WHY ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
AT RISK FOR SEXUAL ABUSE?
• Disabilities and Abuse
• Sexual predators only care about themselves
• Who are sexual predators?
• Some target people with disabilities because they see them as more
vulnerable.
• Sex offenders think that people with disabilities:
• Won’t say no
• Won’t know it’s abuse
• Won’t report it
PROTECT YOURSELF
• Know proper names
• Law enforcement and doctors will take you more
seriously if you say penis or vagina instead of other names
• Know how to report abuse
• Police, Nurse, Doctor, Counselor, Care worker
• Understand your personal rights
• Feel comfortable, safety, respect for yourself and your
body
WOMEN’S BODY PARTS
• Breasts
• Vulva
• Vagina
• Everyone practice
• saying Vulva and Vagina
MEN’S BODY PARTS
• Penis
• Scrotum
• Everyone practice saying
penis and scrotum
SEXUAL FEELINGS
•Once a person goes through puberty they will
begin to have sexual feelings toward others
•It’s normal to have these sexual feelings, what is important is
how you act on them.
•A person can have sexual feelings any time in their life, but
these change around puberty. You might find some sexual
feelings just seem to happen to you. But sexual feelings mostly
come about from things you choose to do, either on your own
or with someone else.
HOW WE HANDLE SEXUAL
FEELINGS
• Good Choices:
• Smile
• Hold hands
• Give a hug (ask first)
• Sit next to them
• Give a small kiss
• Spend time talking
• Write them a letter, poem, song, etc.
HOW WE HANDLE SEXUAL FEELINGS
•Poor Choices:
•Have sex right away
•Follow them everywhere
•Get angry when they talk to other people
•“Hang” on the other person all the time
•Insist on being with them ALL the time
SEXUAL FEELINGS AND
MASTURBATION
• A main way that people express their sexual feelings is by touching their own
genitals. Boys can get pleasure from touching their penis, particularly the tip.
This is called masturbation. Girls can get pleasure by touching the external
part of the vagina called the clitoris. Some people masturbate very often,
maybe every day. Some people do it less often, and some don't masturbate
at all.
• Masturbation is a normal and natural activity and is not bad for you unless
you masturbate so much that you make your genital area sore.
• When a person is masturbating they become more and more sexually
excited. They may then reach a peak of sexual excitement which is called
having an orgasm or "coming". Males will ejaculate, which is when white
substance, sperm, travels from the testis and through the penis. Females will
have some muscle contractions and will release a clear substance inside of
the vagina.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
• Honesty and communication!
• If you do not feel comfortable enough to talk about the
behaviors you are going to or are doing, you are not ready
for those behaviors
• Give the other person their personal space when needed
• Allows the other to have other types of relationships
• Jealousy
• Respect each others needs, wants and decisions
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING ARE GOOD
RESPONSES TO SEXUAL FEELINGS?
• Smile
• Be with them ALL the time
• Hug them
• Sit next to each other
• Get upset when they talk to other people
• Follow them everywhere
• Hold Hands
• Write a poem
• Masturbating where other people can see
• Have sex right away
• Hold each other ALL the time
• Give them a small kiss
• Masturbating
DANGERS OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY
• Unwanted Pregnancy
• Confusion
• Unwanted Sexual Experiences
• Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs)
• Mental and Emotional distress
• Low self-esteem
• Guilt
WHY ARE PEOPLE SEXUALLY ACTIVE?
•It creates children
•To express their love

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
AND DISEASES (STI/STD)

Gonorrhea Chlamydia
AIDS/HIV
Herpes
Syphilis
Trichomoniasis
•
•
•
•
Gential Warts
LGV (Lymphogranuloma
venereum)
Human Papiloma Virus HPV
Pelvic inflammatory
Disease (PID)
STI/ STD FACTS
• Some STIs can kill you
• HIV/AIDS; HPV by cervical cancer; Syphilis by mental defect
• Some STIs can make you infertile (unable to have babies or produce them)
• Some STIs don’t have noticeable symptoms
• Some STIs have treatments, some DO NOT!
• You can NEVER get rid of some STIs
• Syphilis affects your brain
• You can get the same STI more than once
• You can get an STI even if you use a condom
• HPV can be prevented with a vaccine
• STIs are spread through vaginal intercourse, oral sex and anal sex
MYTH OR FACT?
• You can only get an STI
• Some STIs can make you unable to have babies (fertile)
• Some STIs have little to no symptoms
• You can still get an STI even if you use a condom
• All STIs are curable
• The only STI you can die from is HIV/AIDS
• The only way to get an STI is through sexual intercourse
• There is a shot that you can take to prevent STIs
TAKING CARE OF YOUR BODY
•Cancer can damage or take away your
reproductive organs
•It’s important to test yourself regularly
•Breast Examination
•PAP Smear
•Testicular Examination
BREAST SELF EXAMINATION
PERFORMING AN EXAMINATION
• Lie down and place your right arm behind your head. The exam is done while lying
down, not standing up. This is because when lying down the breast tissue spreads evenly
over the chest wall and is as thin as possible, making it much easier to feel all the breast
tissue.
• Use the finger pads of the 3 middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the
right breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads to feel the
breast tissue.
• Use 3 different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Light pressure is needed
to feel the tissue closest to the skin; medium pressure to feel a little deeper; and firm
pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. It is normal to feel a firm ridge in the
lower curve of each breast, but you should tell your doctor if you feel anything else out of
the ordinary. If you're not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse. Use each
pressure level to feel the breast tissue before moving on to the next spot.
• Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line
drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast to the
middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone). Be sure to check the entire breast area
going down until you feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone (clavicle).
PERFORMING AN EXAMINATION CONTINUED
• There is some evidence to suggest that the up-and-down
pattern (sometimes called the
• vertical pattern) is the most effective pattern for covering the
entire breast, without missing any breast tissue.
• Repeat the exam on your left breast, putting your left arm
behind your head and using the finger pads of your right hand to
do the exam.
• While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly
down on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size,
shape, contour, or dimpling, or redness or scaliness of the nipple
or breast skin. (The pressing down on the hips position contracts
the chest wall muscles and enhances any breast changes.)
• Examine each underarm while sitting up or standing and with
your arm only slightly raised so you can easily feel in this area.
Raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and
makes it harder to examine.
PAP SMEAR
For Women
•Every year beginning when you
become sexually active
•Looks for abnormal cervical cells
that can cause cervical cancer
•At a certain age and if you are
monogamous (only one sexual
partner) you can have the exam
every other year or up to every five
years.
• Listen to your Dr.
TESTICULAR EXAM
• If possible, stand in front of a mirror. Check
for any swelling on the scrotal skin.
• Examine each testicle with both hands.
Place the index and middle fingers under
the testicle with the thumbs placed on
top. Roll the testicle gently between the
thumbs and fingers -- you shouldn't feel
any pain when doing the exam. Don't be
alarmed if one testicle seems slightly larger
than the other, that's normal.
TESTICULAR EXAM CONTINUED
• Find the epididymis, the soft, tube-like structure behind the testicle that
collects and carries sperm. If you are familiar with this structure, you won't
mistake it for a suspicious lump. Cancerous lumps usually are found on the
sides of the testicle but can also show up on the front. Lumps on or attached
to the epididymis are not cancerous.
• If you find a lump on your testicle or any of the other signs of testicular
cancer listed below, see a doctor, preferably a urologist, right away. The
abnormality may not be cancer, but if it is testicular cancer, it will spread if it
is not stopped by treatment. Even if it is something else like an infection, you
are still going to need to see a doctor. Waiting and hoping will not fix
anything. Please note that free floating lumps in the scrotum that are not
attached in any way to a testicle are not testicular cancer. When in doubt,
get it checked out - if only for peace of mind!
WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOSE
TO BE ABSTINENT?
• Don’t have to worry about STIs
• Condoms don’t always keep
them all out!
• Don’t have to worry about
pregnancy – Birth control does not
always work!
• Religious believes
• Self Respect
• Don’t have to treat your body with
chemical hormones for birth control
• Better relationships
• What is your plan?
ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND SEX
• Alcohol is a depressant
• This means that it lowers your inhibitions (do something
you normally wouldn’t)
• This means you may not use birth control, like you
normally would
• Can make you forget
• Leads to regret and poor self-esteem
• Other drugs speed up your heart-rate and body
functions- stimulants
• And others that can make you see things that
aren’t there, feel numb and even some drugs like
the one known as ‘The Date Rape Drug’ can
make it so that you can’t move your body, or
speak loud enough to say no or consent.
• Drugs and alcohol put your safety at risk
WHICH ONE OF THESE SITUATIONS
INVOLVED ALCOHOL?
• Bob and Sarah are 18.
They both want to wait
to have sex until they
are married. After
dating for two years
they decide they are
committed enough and
have sex.
• Joe and Laura are 18.
Laura wants to wait until
she’s married to have
sex. Joe has already
had sex. After dating for
two months they have
sex one night.

  • 13. SEXUAL FEELINGS AND MASTURBATION • A main way that people express their sexual feelings is by touching their own genitals. Boys can get pleasure from touching their penis, particularly the tip. This is called masturbation. Girls can get pleasure by touching the external part of the vagina called the clitoris. Some people masturbate very often, maybe every day. Some people do it less often, and some don't masturbate at all. • Masturbation is a normal and natural activity and is not bad for you unless you masturbate so much that you make your genital area sore. • When a person is masturbating they become more and more sexually excited. They may then reach a peak of sexual excitement which is called having an orgasm or "coming". Males will ejaculate, which is when white substance, sperm, travels from the testis and through the penis. Females will have some muscle contractions and will release a clear substance inside of the vagina.
  • 14. POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS • Honesty and communication! • If you do not feel comfortable enough to talk about the behaviors you are going to or are doing, you are not ready for those behaviors • Give the other person their personal space when needed • Allows the other to have other types of relationships • Jealousy • Respect each others needs, wants and decisions

  • 30. TAKING CARE OF YOUR BODY •Cancer can damage or take away your reproductive organs •It’s important to test yourself regularly •Breast Examination •PAP Smear •Testicular Examination
  • 32. PERFORMING AN EXAMINATION • Lie down and place your right arm behind your head. The exam is done while lying down, not standing up. This is because when lying down the breast tissue spreads evenly over the chest wall and is as thin as possible, making it much easier to feel all the breast tissue. • Use the finger pads of the 3 middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads to feel the breast tissue. • Use 3 different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Light pressure is needed to feel the tissue closest to the skin; medium pressure to feel a little deeper; and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. It is normal to feel a firm ridge in the lower curve of each breast, but you should tell your doctor if you feel anything else out of the ordinary. If you're not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse. Use each pressure level to feel the breast tissue before moving on to the next spot. • Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast to the middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone). Be sure to check the entire breast area going down until you feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone (clavicle).
  • 33. PERFORMING AN EXAMINATION CONTINUED • There is some evidence to suggest that the up-and-down pattern (sometimes called the • vertical pattern) is the most effective pattern for covering the entire breast, without missing any breast tissue. • Repeat the exam on your left breast, putting your left arm behind your head and using the finger pads of your right hand to do the exam. • While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly down on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size, shape, contour, or dimpling, or redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin. (The pressing down on the hips position contracts the chest wall muscles and enhances any breast changes.) • Examine each underarm while sitting up or standing and with your arm only slightly raised so you can easily feel in this area. Raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and makes it harder to examine.
  • 34. PAP SMEAR For Women •Every year beginning when you become sexually active •Looks for abnormal cervical cells that can cause cervical cancer •At a certain age and if you are monogamous (only one sexual partner) you can have the exam every other year or up to every five years. • Listen to your Dr.
  • 35. TESTICULAR EXAM • If possible, stand in front of a mirror. Check for any swelling on the scrotal skin. • Examine each testicle with both hands. Place the index and middle fingers under the testicle with the thumbs placed on top. Roll the testicle gently between the thumbs and fingers -- you shouldn't feel any pain when doing the exam. Don't be alarmed if one testicle seems slightly larger than the other, that's normal.
  • 36. TESTICULAR EXAM CONTINUED • Find the epididymis, the soft, tube-like structure behind the testicle that collects and carries sperm. If you are familiar with this structure, you won't mistake it for a suspicious lump. Cancerous lumps usually are found on the sides of the testicle but can also show up on the front. Lumps on or attached to the epididymis are not cancerous. • If you find a lump on your testicle or any of the other signs of testicular cancer listed below, see a doctor, preferably a urologist, right away. The abnormality may not be cancer, but if it is testicular cancer, it will spread if it is not stopped by treatment. Even if it is something else like an infection, you are still going to need to see a doctor. Waiting and hoping will not fix anything. Please note that free floating lumps in the scrotum that are not attached in any way to a testicle are not testicular cancer. When in doubt, get it checked out - if only for peace of mind!
  • 37. WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOSE TO BE ABSTINENT? • Don’t have to worry about STIs • Condoms don’t always keep them all out! • Don’t have to worry about pregnancy – Birth control does not always work! • Religious believes • Self Respect • Don’t have to treat your body with chemical hormones for birth control • Better relationships • What is your plan?
  • 38. ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND SEX • Alcohol is a depressant • This means that it lowers your inhibitions (do something you normally wouldn’t) • This means you may not use birth control, like you normally would • Can make you forget • Leads to regret and poor self-esteem • Other drugs speed up your heart-rate and body functions- stimulants • And others that can make you see things that aren’t there, feel numb and even some drugs like the one known as ‘The Date Rape Drug’ can make it so that you can’t move your body, or speak loud enough to say no or consent. • Drugs and alcohol put your safety at risk
  • 39. WHICH ONE OF THESE SITUATIONS INVOLVED ALCOHOL? • Bob and Sarah are 18. They both want to wait to have sex until they are married. After dating for two years they decide they are committed enough and have sex. • Joe and Laura are 18. Laura wants to wait until she’s married to have sex. Joe has already had sex. After dating for two months they have sex one night.
  • 40. WHO CAN YOU TALK TO ABOUT SEXUAL CONCERNS? • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________ • ___________________
