3. Medical radiation technology is a
demanding and sophisticated
profession.
Ongoing advancements in
technology, procedures and
patient care make it one of
the most rapidly evolving
health care professions.
5. Five Modalities are grouped under the
Medial Radiation Technology Family:
Nuclear Medicine
Radiation Therapy
Magnetic Resonance
Ultrasound
Radiological Technology
6. Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Acquire images using radiopharmaceuticals that help
pinpoint the nature of a disease and how it is affecting
the body. Their work also enables doctors to monitor a
patient's response to treatment.
Some of the main uses of nuclear medicine include:
•Evaluating coronary disease
•Studying how the brain, heart,
lungs, kidneys and other
organs are functioning
•Determining the location of
tumours
•Monitoring the progression of
cancer and the results of
cancer treatments
•Diagnosing hormonal
disorders
8. Radiation Therapist
Are an integral part of the treatment planning aspects of
cancer therapy involving radiation. Planing and delivering
radiation treatments prescribed by a physician
specializing in cancer treatment (radiation oncologist).
Other major responsibilities include:
• performing treatment
simulations
• taking measurements
• constructing and fitting
accessory devices
• determining radiation doses
9. Magnetic Resonance Technologist
Produces images with excellent soft tissue
discrimination using magnetic fields and
radiofrequency pulses to aid in diagnosis
of disease.
MRI is the fastest growing
imaging modality that is
replacing many invasive
procedures in today’s
health care environment
12. Ultrasound Technologist
Also called medical sonographers, operate
equipment that generates cross-sectional images
from sound waves that are transmitted to and
reflected back from organs and tissues within the
body. Through these returned echoes images are
created.
The ultrasound helps physicians to
safely monitor pregnancies and
diagnose cardiac, ophthalmic,
vascular and many other medical
disorders without the use of radiation.
14. Radiological Technologist
Make up about 80% of the 10,000 members represented
by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation
Technologists (CAMRT).
At a physician's request, the technologist produces images
of a body part or system using equipment that emits x-rays.
The radiologist - a doctor who specializes in interpreting x-
rays - studies the images and dispenses advice that will
help the treating physician make a diagnosis and prescribe
an appropriate course of treatment to the patient.
15. Radiological Technologist
The profession of radiological technologist involves a
broad variety of procedures and covers a number of
specialties, including:
•Plain film radiological technology, i.e.,
x-rays of the chest, bones, joints,
gastrointestinal studies, spine
•Mammography to detect breast cancer
in its earliest stages
•Angiography to examine the heart,
blood vessels and blood flow
•Fluoroscopy, i.e., real-time images that
show movement
•Computerized tomography (CT scans),
i.e., detailed cross-sectional images of
the body
