3. For the semester I was the only intern at Play for Peace in Clinton, Illinois. As the only
intern I was asked to create promotional materials for the organization and help with various
activities for the organization. Play for Peace in Clinton is a relatively new organization, while
there are different HUB organizations throughout the world; it has only been in Clinton for a
couple of years. While I was an intern I could have attended play sessions each week, I was not
able to due to a schedule conflict. As the intern I worked with the high school facilitators, adult
facilitators, and the employees from Play for Peace Global in Chicago. When working with Play
for Peace Global, Susan Wrzalinksi the director of operations asked me to get the facilitators
involved with the new forum for facilitators around the world. As the intern for Play for Peace,
Clinton I created flyers, brochures and T-shirts. As the organization is new to Clinton, I also
gave ideas of how to get the community more involved and promote growth in the organization.
In the future; Play for Peace can start a yearly lock-in for elementary students, work with
community businesses to raise money and awareness and hopefully expand to more schools in
Clinton and in surrounding communities.

5. Public Relations is my second major and I never looked at it as something I would really
enjoy doing; this internship has changed my opinion. I started my public relations major my
junior year and I did not realize how much I have learned during that time. As I came into Play
for Peace they were open to any and all ideas I had for expanding the organization. When I
started to think about how to expand the organization many ideas came to mind. I realized that
the classes I have taken prepared me to go into the world of public relations and think as a public
relations associate. I jumped in right away at Play for Peace and felt comfortable creating
promotional materials. While I wish I could have spent more time as an intern to see some of my
ideas come through; the internship experience opened my eyes to what I am able to do in public
relations. Originally, my career goal was to become a lobbyist. After this internship, I now
realize that I can be an advocate and a public relations professional, these interests of mine can
and do work together.
My internship can be summed up in one word, confidence. As the internship progressed I
stopped acting like a student and became a professional. In school, teachers always tell you what
they want you to do, while in the professional world you also have to take the imitative to do
things on your own. While at first I expected my supervisors to have a list of things they wanted
me to do, they also wanted me to come up with other ideas to promote the organization.
Throughout the internship I gained more and more self-confidence in my work and ideas. I came
to the realization, that I was the one who was educated to do public relations, my supervisor is
not. I then looked at the internship from the perspective of a consultant; I was the public
5
6. relations specialist. After that realization I began to recommend different approaches and
activities to promote the organization. I only wish that I had realized my skill earlier in the
internship. I feel I could have provided much better advice and ideas, if I had the confidence I
have now.
