local adult literacy program, teach senior citizens about Medicare coverage or lead workshops at a
center for small businesses. You will gain valuable experience, preserve your sanity and possibly
expand your network.
It is a good idea to use your cell number on your resume so that potential employers can get in touch
with you at any time of the day. This will allow you to receive calls from potential employers right
away. In fact, you can take your cell phone with you to the garden, bathroom or anywhere else you
might need it.
Create several resumes. If you are an older job seeker with lots of varied and diverse experience,
sort through that experience to target the job you are seeking. You don't have to list every kind of
experience you ever had, and you should avoid doing so because it will make your resume too long
and difficult for your prospective employer to sort out.
Remember that when you are at a job interview that you need to keep everything you say positive.
Never speak badly of previous employers. This never reflects badly on your previous employer, it
only reflects badly on you. If you do not have something good to say, then try to switch the subject.
It is always best when applying for a job through a major job site that you make sure you not only
apply online but contact the company itself and specifically the hiring manager. This is important
becuase you want your expressed interest to get noticed. Grab their attention in more ways than
one.
When you graduate college, put the pedal to the metal and apply for jobs as soon as you can. It is
very tempting to sit back and wait a few months or years before you get yourself going. Taking the
initiative immediately will put you ahead of everyone who is sitting back and doing nothing.
Keep your references up to date. When your reference has a different phone number or forgets who
you are, you'll be in trouble. Speak with the references you have and be sure that they're still at the
same location with the same number.
Before any interview practice answering questions you may think will pop up. You don't want to be
thrown for a loop during an important interview! Write out the ten toughest questions you think they
may ask and really craft out good answers. This way you'll be ready with a good answer in case the
question is asked.
Get out there and attend many functions. First and foremost, attend any professional association
gatherings that are pertinent to your area. This is a great place to find out about openings and make
important personal connections. Also attend alumni events for your alma mater and make
connections with other alumni that may be able to help you in your search.
When interviewing for a job, do some research on the company you're applying to. You should ask
yourself how much you actually know about the company beforehand. You should know a lot about
it, including some history, important accomplishments, recent events, etc. Most of this information
can be easily found online. Looking knowledgeable about a company during an interview can
increase your chances of getting the position.
Keep your resume to one page. For the majority of people, a resume one page long is enough to get
your story across. Longer resumes have a tendency of getting trashed before ever getting
