The E-Learning Classroom Jen Bates and Ali Hamp
Professional Learning Community (PLC) In education, a PLC is the context in which people involved with teaching collaboratively learn how they can improve student learning. The function of these ongoing PD sessions will be for those involved to improve their pedagogy in terms of e-learning and share their practice with others.
Current e-learning 1-1 Computing Teacher led instruction Publishing Internet games
What does e-learning mean to you? Using a range of technologies across curriculum levels and areas to promote learning and teaching Using different multimedia devices; a variety of technologies ICT integration for me is all about using an exciting range of tools to enhance learning opportunities
What is e-learning? E-learning is defined as the delivery of educational content via any electronic media. But in practice it represents much more.
Why is e-learning important? “The use of digital technology has been completely normalised by this generation, and it is now fully integrated into their daily lives. The majority of young people simply use new media as tools to make their lives easier.” (Their Space: Education for a digital generation (2007) Hannah Green and Celia Hannon)
Why is e-learning important? “The place of technology in our future learning systems cannot be isolated from the way technology is impacting on our society.” (The place of technology (2009) Theme paper from Secondary Futures.) Retrieved from Ministry of Education http://nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz
Curriculum links Managing self: Students make their own decisions about what tools to use and how to manage their time. Participating and contributing: Students work with the teacher and peers. They teach others as they learn independently.
Curriculum links Language, Symbols and Text: Navigating a wide range of data, students will use text and graphics to convey ideas. Thinking: Students use higher order thinking to organise their thoughts. Relating to others: Sharing and working with others anywhere and everywhere. Collaboration is key to successful e-learning.
Collaboration is key Hiltz (1994, p.23) defines collaborative learning as an environment in which:“both teachers and learners are active participants in the learning process; knowledge is not something that is ‘delivered’ to students but rather something that emerges from active dialogue among those who seek to understand and apply concepts and techniques.
E-Learning is… Students choosing ICT tools to facilitate their own learning. Personal Learning Paths Students documenting their work digitally. Using social media to communicate and learn. Collaborating inside and outside the classroom. Using ICT tools to reflect and self assess
Tools……
Technology tools Digital camera Smart phone Projector iPod Interactive whiteboard Laptop Webcam iPad Video camera
Web tools Blogs:A blog (a blend of the term web log) is where a person can post written work online (like a journal) and gather feedback from a large audience. They can also edit, post links, pictures and videos. Wikis:A Web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content. RangiNet:Teachers can upload resources, create links, monitor and assess students. Students can find resources, complete work online and keep portfolios or journals.
Web tools Google DocsStudents create documents or forms online rather than using conventional word processors. Then teachers, peers and parents can login and collaborate with them in real time and give feedback. Web 2.0There are literally hundreds of tools online designed to connect students together and allow them to collaborate and create amazing things! Chat and video conferencingCan be used to connect with other schools or even scholars/experts. Can also be used as a function for students to ask questions and get help.
Discuss Monitor Evaluate Research Compare Collaborate Teach Learn IWB Laptops ipads Camera Software Microphone
How could you use thesetools in your classroom?
E-learning rubric The e-learning rubric follows the process of developing an e-learning classroom from the entry stage to the exemplary stage. It covers four key areas: Engagement Collaboration Creative Reflection
Engagement How well are ICT tools tied into student learning?
Collaboration Are students using ICT tools to work with their peers and teacher?
Creative Are students creating and presenting work using ICT tools?
Reflection Is ICT being used for students to reflect and be assessed?
From here… … to there!
