3. • What is filtration?
Filtration is the process of separating tiny insoluble particles such as soil from
liquids. Filter paper is placed in the funnel, then the water is poured into the
filter paper, the soil will stay onto the paper as the soil is too big, and the water
will go through. Filter papers’ holes are so tiny that they cannot be seen with the
naked eye.
What do we use it for?

4. • What is decanting?
• When a heavy insoluble substance such as sand sinks to
the bottom of a solvent. Then by pouring the solvent into
another storage area, the water will pour and the sand
won’t be able to catch up as it is too heavy.
Decanting
5. • What is floatation?
• When an insoluble solute such as oil floats to the top of a
solvent such as water. To separate this suspension, the
suspension is poured into a separating funnel, which let the
water flows down when the tap is open, and as all the water
is gone, the tap is closed and the oil stays in the funnel.

6. • What is evaporation?
• Evaporation is the process of turning a liquid into a gas.
Water vapour can then be turned back into a liquid by
using a condenser.

7. • What is Distillation?
• Distillation is the process of separating water and salt.
First the salt water is placed in the boiling flask. A
Bunsen burner is put under the flask. As the boiling flask
heats up the water and turns it into steam, the steam
travels upwards into the condenser and the steam
condenses into pure water, and goes into the conical flask.
