2. BREATHING.
1. There is only a short window for
breathing in the butterfly. (If this window is
missed, swimming becomes very difficult).
2. The swimmer synchronizes the taking of
breaths with the undulation of the body.
3. As the hands and forearms move
underneath the chest, the body will
naturally rise toward the surface of the
water. At this moment, they´ll breath in.
4. The swimmer breathes in through the
mouth.
5. The swimmer breathes out through
mouth and nose till the next breath.
6. Normally, a breath is taken every other
stroke (i.e., every 2 cycles).
3. ARM´S MOVEMENT.
1. The butterfly stroke has three major parts, the pull, the push, and the recovery.
1.1. The pull: Like in breastroke, the hands sink a little bit down. This is called
“catching the water”. It follows a semicircle that ends in front of the chin.
1.2. The push: the palm pushes backward through the water, underneath and
at the side of the body.
1.3. The recovery The arms have to move forward fast in order to bring them to
the front over the water. The arms enter the water with the thumbs first at
shoulder width.
2. Generally, viewed from below, the arm movement forms a fat "keyhole" figure
during the stroke cycle.
4. THE LEGS´ MOVEMENT.
1. The leg movement is similar to the leg movement in the front
crawl, except the legs are synchronized with each other.
2. The feet are naturally pointing downwards, giving
downwards push.
3. The typical method of swimming
butterfly is with two kicks.
4. Ideally, there are 2 kicks per cycle.
5. BODY MOVEMENT.
1. Swimming the arms or the legs separately is difficult in
butterfly stroke.
2. The body moves in a wave-like motion, controlled by the
arm movement.
3. As the hands go in, the hips go up.
4. During the push phase the head goes up and the hips
are at their lowest position.
