This document outlines a unit on popular music for a Year 10 class. It includes key learning areas and objectives. Instruction is differentiated into three layers (A, B, C) with increasing levels of difficulty. Layer C assignments focus on basic understanding and include tasks like note-taking, writing reviews, and worksheets. Layer B assignments require intermediate understanding and tasks like analyzing genres. Layer A assignments are advanced and include composing original music, research presentations, and performances. Students are expected to complete assignments for their level and higher levels can attempt more challenging options.

8. Differentiated Instruction cont. There will be 3 layers of assignments for the students. Layer A-advanced work Layer B- intermediate work Layer C- general work Points will be assigned to each particular assessment . Students choose the level of work at which they can apply themselves in their goal to attain as many points as possible!
9. C Layer assignments -Basic Understanding of Popular Music: Take notes from daily classes Watch a DVD of a live concert of a band and write a page on the band’s performance techniques Using the concepts of music write a review of a top 40 song

C Layer assignments: Basic Understanding of Popular Music Make 15 flash cards describing the concepts of music used in Hip Hop music-choose 2 pieces to base this on From the list of chord charts pick 2 Rock’n’Roll songs to perform to the class Complete the aural skills worksheet on the song “She’s A Mod” by Melbourne surf rock band Mach Pelican Complete the worksheet comparing and contrasting Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “People Ain’t No Good” with Nancy Vandal’s “When I Squeeze My Nose I Sound Like Axel Rose”
11. C Layer assignments: Basic Understanding of Popular Music Write 2 paragraphs on how the musical concepts are used to write a song in the style of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Research 3 different types of popular music styles and write a small half page report on each one
12. B Layer assignments: Intermediate Understanding of Popular Music Find a popular music genre which is the most in-depth with regards to Duration and Tempo. Look at 3-4 genres and compare+contrast Pick 2 pop songs with an emphasis on Dynamics and Expressive Techiques and notate the pieces using graphic notation
13. A Layer assignments: Advanced Understanding of Popular Music Composition- compose a piece of music 1-2 minutes long in a style of pop music of your choice. Notate the composition in either graphic or traditional style. Keep a process journal to show your work. It can have lyrics or just be instrumental.
14. A Layer assignments: Advanced Understanding of Popular Music Musicology Assignment- research a style of popular music or band/artist from the 1950s to present day. Give a 5 min presentation to the class with short musical examples. There will be a short Q+A session from the class afterwards.
15. A Layer assignments: Advanced Understanding of Popular Music Performance- this can be either a solo or an ensemble performance of a pop song. Students will be marked on technicality and stylistic interpretation
16. What should students be expected to do? More advanced students must attempt assignments from all 3 layers The intermediate students must attempt the B and C layers though may attempt A if they wish General students are expected to attempt C layers. They may attempt other layers if they wish.
