• The Hunger Games is a 2008 novel written
by Suzanne Collins where a 16-year-old girl
named Katniss Everdeen narrates the story
in Panem that contains a Capitol and 12
Districts that surround it.

• Every year, they celebrate the Hunger
Games, which is an event where two
tributes, male and female, from every
District must go to an Arena and fight until
there is one survivor.
• That year, Katniss’ sister Prim is
selected, but she volunteers in her
place.

• She goes to the Capitol along with
Peeta Mellark, and the story
develops where she will have to
fight to return home with an
environment surrounded by war,
friendship, and love…
• The Author of this novel is Suzanne
Collins. She was born in August 10th,
1962 in Hartford, Conneticut. She is an
American writer and novelist, and it is the
author of the bestselling series.
• She is married and has two children. She
began her professional career writing for
children’s television in 1991. Some of her
works are The Underland Chronicles, The
Hunger Games Trilogy, and Year of the
Jungle.
• The story starts in Panem’s District 12 with
Katniss Everdeen as narrator. After going
hunting with Gale, she goes with her mother
and sister Prim to the Reaping, since that
day the tributes for the Hunger Games are
selected.

• After Effie Trinket selects a random paper
from the girls bowl, she says the name:
“Primrose Everdeen”.
• Katniss feels desperate and she runs toward the
stage, while being stopped by guards. She then
volunteers for Prim. The male Tribute selected
is Peeta Mellark, whom Katniss remembers
because he once threw a burnt bread to her
when she was starving.
• They both go to the Capitol and get prepared to

go to the Arena. During the opening ceremony,
Peeta and she stood out among all the other
tributes for their stunning outfits. They get to
know the other tributes and see their skills.
• Finally, the day has come and all the tributes
are taken to the Arena. In the middle of the
place is the Cornucopia, which has a big pile of
supplies. By the first day, 12 tributes were
killed.
•

Katniss had ran away, but when she finally saw
that the allies found her (districts 1, 2 and 4),

and Peeta was with them, who had said that he
was in love with her during an interview. She
climbed a tree and sleep in it while the allies
slept under the tree.
• The next day, she saw Rue (District 11) on a
tree that was trying to show her a nest of
tracker jackers that was above. Katniss
threw the nest to the allies and ran away
but she had been stung by them also.
• Rue took care of her when she was

unconscious. Rue and Katniss ally and
destroy the supplies of the other allies. Rue
is later killed by the tribute from District 1.
•

Katniss later finds Peeta, when a rule changed,
allowing two tributes from the same districts as
winners. He was wounded by Cato in the leg, while

he was trying to protect Katniss.
•

They hide in a cave and Katniss acts more romantic
with him since they are “The tragic lovers”, and she is
following orders from Haymitch.

•

After knocking Peeta out with a special syrup, she
goes to get the medicine for Peeta at the Cornucopia
sent by the Capitol. When she grabs the bag, she is
attacked by another female tribute.
• Katniss is saved by Thresh from District 11.
She goes back with Peeta and gives him
the medicine. After staying in the cave for
days because of the rain, they finally go out
in search of food.
• Peeta

accidentally

collected

some

poisonous berries that Foxface (District 5)
ate and died. They realize that Cato killed
Thresh, and it is now in search of them.
• Later, they saw Cato being chased by great
creatures that Katniss realizes that are the dead
tributes converted into huge wolves.
• They all climb to the Cornucopia and Cato grabs
Peeta. Finally, Katniss shoots Cato in the hand
and Peeta throws him to the creatures.

• Another announcement is made, and it said
that there can only be one winner. Katniss takes
puts out the berries and gives half to Peeta.
• Just as they are about to commit suicide, they
are declared the winners of the 74th Hunger
Games. They both are kept in the Training
Center until they recover. Then, Haymitch tells
Katniss that she is in danger because of her act
of defiance unless she convinces the public that
she was so afraid of losing Peeta.
•

After the last interview, Haymitch tells her that
she did great, and Peeta wonders what he
means. Katniss then explains everything and
Peeta feels hurt and destroyed.
• When they arrived to the
District 12, they both hold

hands and say: “One last time?
For the audience?” as they both
prepare for the cameras.
• 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen is the
principal character and narrator of the
Hunger Games saga. She lives in
Panem’s 12th district with her mother,
and her sister Primrose “Prim” Everdeen.
•

She offers herself as a tribute in the 74th

Hunger games after Primrose was
elected as a tribute for their district
along with Peeta Mellark. She has
supported her family since her father

died.
• 16-year-old Peeta Mellark, son of a
baker that helped Katniss during a
rough time, is a tribute from
District 12 for the 74th Hunger
Games.
• He has been in love with Katniss
since the first time he saw her. His

greatest ability is his strength. He
is very kind and does everything to
protect Katniss.
• 18-year-old Gale is Katniss’ best
friend and hunting partner. He is
the head of his family since his
father died in a mine explosion.
• He lives in district 12 and usually

goes hunting along with Katniss
to get food (illegally) to support
his family. He hates the laws of
the Capitol and is against it.
• Haymitch is the drunk mentor of the
tributes of District 12 in the Hunger
Games. He is the survivor and winner

of the 50th Hunger Games.
•

After having some conflicts with
Katniss and Peeta, he decides he will
do everything to maintain them alive
during the Arena.
• She is the escort that was assigned for
District 12. She always shows her
enthusiasm for the Hunger Games, and

has a Capitol accent that Peeta and
Katniss make fun of.
• She likes to be very punctual and she
organizes every event of the District 12
tributes.

She wears very fancy and

colorful clothes.
• Cinna is the assigned stylist for
Katniss in this year’s Hunger Games.
He is different from the other stylists,
and he only wears very little make up
and his golden eyeliner.
• He develops a very deep friendship
with Katniss, and creates stunning
dresses for her, making the public call
her “The Girl on Fire”.
• She is the 11-year-old girl that is tribute
from District 11. She reminds Katniss of

her little sister Prim. Her greatest ability
is to jump from tree to tree. She loves
music and mockingjays.
• During the time in the Arena, Rue allies

with Katniss and takes care of her when
she is wounded, but she is later killed by
the tribute from District 1.
• He was a tribute from District 2
on the 74th Hunger Games. He

trained for his entire life for that
event, and during the time on
the Arena, he formed an allie
with Districts 1 and 4.
• He is really violent and it is the
principal enemy of Katniss.

• "[A] plot-driven blend of suspense, science fiction, and romance."
• --USAToday
• "The plot is front and center here—the twists and turns are addictive,
particularly when the romantic subplot ups the ante—yet the Capitol’s
oppression and exploitation of the districts always simmers just below the
surface, waiting to be more fully explored in future volumes. Collins has
written a compulsively readable blend of science fiction, survival story,
unlikely romance, and social commentary."
• --Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW
•

"...brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced...a futuristic novel every bit as good and as
allegorically rich as Scott Westerfeld's 'Uglies' books."

•

--The New YorkTimes, John Green

•

“...enthralling, imaginative and creepy...”

•

--Los Angeles Times

•

"Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances

and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and
engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality
shows like "Survivor" and "American Gladiator."
•

--School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW
•

"Populated by three dimensional characters, this is a superb tale of physical adventure,
political suspense, and romance."

•

--Booklist, STARRED REVIEW

•

"[A] stylish postmodern 'Lost' in direct collision with 'Lord of the Flies.'"

•

--The Wall Street Journal, Katie Roiphe

•

"Themes of government control, "big brother," and personal independence are explored
amidst a thrilling adventure that will appeal to science fiction, survival, and adventure readers.
The suspense of this powerful novel will keep the reader glued to the page long after bedtime."

  • 30. • "[A] plot-driven blend of suspense, science fiction, and romance." • --USAToday • "The plot is front and center here—the twists and turns are addictive, particularly when the romantic subplot ups the ante—yet the Capitol’s oppression and exploitation of the districts always simmers just below the surface, waiting to be more fully explored in future volumes. Collins has written a compulsively readable blend of science fiction, survival story, unlikely romance, and social commentary." • --Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW
  • 31. • "...brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced...a futuristic novel every bit as good and as allegorically rich as Scott Westerfeld's 'Uglies' books." • --The New YorkTimes, John Green • “...enthralling, imaginative and creepy...” • --Los Angeles Times • "Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like "Survivor" and "American Gladiator." • --School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW
  • 32. • "Populated by three dimensional characters, this is a superb tale of physical adventure, political suspense, and romance." • --Booklist, STARRED REVIEW • "[A] stylish postmodern 'Lost' in direct collision with 'Lord of the Flies.'" • --The Wall Street Journal, Katie Roiphe • "Themes of government control, "big brother," and personal independence are explored amidst a thrilling adventure that will appeal to science fiction, survival, and adventure readers. The suspense of this powerful novel will keep the reader glued to the page long after bedtime." • --VOYA, Deborah L. Dubois
