Longview and Welcome To
Paradise music video
Longview is the first ever Green Day music video.
He is wearing a brown and white stripy top, black
jeans and his hair is black and curly and untamed.
Here I don’t think Billie Joe fits into the male gender
representation because here he looks weak and
insane which is opposite to the strong stereotypical
male.
Welcome to Paradise features Billie Joe wearing a
bright yellow top, black jeans with a low crotch
popular in the 90’s and again untamed black curly
hair. As a front man of a rock band I think Billie Joe
doesn’t fit in with the rock band stereotype because
he is wearing popular trends but also he is wearing
bright clothes when the stereotype for rock bands
is wearing a lot of black clothing.
3. 1995
Basket Case, When I Come
Around, Geek Stink Breath, Stuck
With Me
In 1995 I believe this is the point where I think Billie Joe was finding himself. In
1995 you can see how he looks different in each video. Basket Case features
him wearing all black clothing and I think fitting into the more stereotype of rock
band frontman. In the video for When I Come Around Billie Joe is wearing casual
looking clothes, rather than all black which he usually wears. Geek Stink Breath
is the debut of Billie Joe's new bleached blonde hair and then Stuck With Me
sees Billie Joe with his black hair again but for the first time it is styled with styled
with gel.
4. 1996
Brain Stew/Jaded, Walking
Contradiction
Brain Stew/jaded shows Billie Joe wearing a suit in
this video which doesn’t fit into the rock genre of
music he is in so perhaps this could be showing a
different side to Billie Joe he is showing in the
Brain Stew music video.
Walking Contradiction is the second video
released in 1996 where Billie Joe has again
bleached his hair blonde but this is the first time
we see him wearing black skinny jeans whereas
before Billie Joe wore popular low bottom jeans
popular in the 90’s this video could suggest him
breaking the norm.
5. 1997
Hitching A Ride and Time Of Your
Life
Hitching A Ride shows Billie Joe wearing a
yellow/cream coloured suit with a bold print on it.
This video doesn’t fit into the rock band
stereotype as they are all wearing brightly
coloured clothes and looking quite quirky this
could be to fit into the theme of the song. Billie
Joe is still looking young with his non styled hair.
Time Of Your Life is probably the most popular early
Green Day songs. Here Billie Joe is using an acoustic
guitar and wearing all black. The all black could be to
give a mood/feeling to the song but also it does fit into
the rock band stereotype where all black makes a
rock band. Lastly Billie Joe hair has been gelled into
spikes whereas in the Hitching A Ride his hair is
looking untamed which could show that Billie Joe is
becoming more aware of what he looks like.
6. 1998
Redundant
The video for Redundant shows Billie
wearing a white shirt with black shoes and
black skinny jeans. Also this is the first time
when Billie Joe’s tattoo is on show through
the video. Tattoos are something which is
stereotypical of rock bands to have tattoos
but also he is made to be the dominate one
out of Green Day because he is placed more
pronate in the frame which fits into the
stereotype that rock band frontmen think they
are more important than the rest of the band.
7. 1999
Nice Guys Finish Last
In this video Billie Joe has a now dyed his hair
again bleached blonde. This is the first time he
had dyed his hair blonde since 1996 during the
video for Walking Contradiction. Here features
Billie wearing black skinny jeans, a tight fitting
top and a black and white belt. This outfit is
similar to his outfit during Walking Contradiction
but Billie Joe is holding a guitar in this video
which could suggest this music video is more of
a performance than a narrative music video.
8. 2000
Minority and Warning
The video for Minority shows Billie wearing a
navy blue sweater with a light colour top
underneath it. The video was filmed in San
Diego where it’s supposed to be quite hot so
Billie Joe wearing long covered clothing which
are dark colours when it’s hot could suggest a
link with the song title Minority that he wants to
be different to everyone else.
Billie Joe in Warning has now died his hair
bleached blonde for the fourth time. In this video
he is wearing all black but also for the first time
he is wearing a beanie so we can see his face
more compared to before but also we notice that
Billie Joe now has his ear pierced. Piercings are
a stereotype that comes with being in a rock
band.
9. 2001
Waiting and Macy’s Day Parade
In the video for Macy’s Day Parade we see a
completely different look to Billie Joe which we haven’t
seen before. Billie has gone for a skinhead haircut
which is very different to his usual short black scruffy
hair. Billie is wearing a black suit which could suggest
the formality of the song such as a celebration
because the name of the song is Macy’s Day Parade.
For the video ‘Waiting’ Billie Joe is wearing a
purple and black stripy top and black skinny jeans.
This is still the period where Billie Joe is not
wearing eye liner. Billie Joe is was 29 during this
video so he has matured facially a lot more
compared to the first early Green Day videos
where he was 22 but he still dresses young which
could suggest what audience he is trying to target.
10. 2004
American Idiot and Boulevard of
Broken Dreams
American Idiot is probably the most popular and
well known Green Day song and this is his
more well known which everyone knows Billie
Joe for. The look consists of heavy black
eyeliner, styled gel black hair, black shirt and
the iconic red tie.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams shows Billie Joe
wearing similar clothing but instead of the iconic
red tie Billie Joe is wearing a grey tie matched with
a grey blazer looking quite smart. There the
eyeliner has been laid off in this video giving it a
more sane look in comparison to the American
Idiot video but it the insane look does fit in with the
song. Lastly in this video Billie Joe’s hair has
grown and he is wearing very little hair gel.
11. 2005
Holiday, Wake Me Up When
September Ends and Jesus of
Suburbia
During 2005 Billie Joe has his hair very similar in all of it with the jet black hair styled in a
spikey way with hair gel and the dark black eyeliner. In the video for Holiday and Wake
Me Up When September Ends his outfit is similar as he is wearing the black skinny
jeans he usually wears but he is wearing a blazer/shirt in both of these videos making
him look very smart. The video for Wake Me Up Billie is wearing all black which could
suggest the song is sad and depressing. In Jesus of Suburbia you don’t see Billie Joe
directly but you see him wearing an outfit similar to American Idiot which is his most
popular look which is why they have chosen to make Billie wear his outfit because it is
the most recognizable one.
12. 2009
Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns, East
Jesus Nowhere, 21st Century
Breakdown
2009 Billie Joe is seen wearing roughly the same clothing throughout and there
is not much difference in each picture. Billie Joe is wearing a black jacket in all 4
music videos all looking the same with a collar on it. In all 4 music videos he is
seen holding a guitar which shows he isn’t just a singer of the band he is a
musician too. His ability to play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, play live and act
for music videos so he is very skilled in different areas.
13. 2010
Last of the American Girls
This is the most recent video by Green Day. Here Billie Joe is wearing all black.
Her is wearing black skinny jeans, a black shirt with what looks like badges, he
has jet black hair with a messy styled but also he is wearing black eyeliner. The
black eyeliner gives Billie Joe a feminine look. The eyeliner is something which
is not typical in men because usually make up is usually only for women so him
wearing make up could be taken the wrong way and people may think that
Billie Joe is gay because he is wearing female makeup.
14. Parody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUNJ0xSOenU
Here is a parody from Youtube that someone has done.
Here you can see that the boy playing Billie Joe has
chosen to use Billie Joe’s most well known look which he
wore in the Green Day video for American Idiot which is a
red tie, black shirt, eyeliner and styled with gel hair. The
boy who has chosen to imitate Billie Joe has over styled
his hair with hair gel and over done the black eye liner
which Billie Joe wears suggesting that this is what stands
out to this person about Billie Joe.
15. Gender representation
Billie Joe isn’t represented how a typical man should be
presented. Men typical are stereotyped to be strong and the
dominant one. Back in the old days men were seen as the
breadwinner often going on hunts to provide food for their family.
Women typically want a man who is tall, dark, handsome but also
muscular. Billie Joe Armstrong is none of these things. He is a
short man who many would classify as handsome but more
importantly he looks more like a female than a male. His gender
representation is a mixture of female and male. This could be
because his sexuality as openly bisexual but it could be to
represent the genre of rock music. Billie Joe looks female as he
wears eyeliner and skinny jeans which isn’t very masculine. This
skinny jean look is typical to rock genre of music which creates
Billie Joe’s star look but also it emphasizes the rock look for their
audiences.
